Why Atiku Joined PDP, set for 2019 presidential race
Sat, 25 Nov 2017
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has settled with the People’s Democratic Party to pursue his presidential ambition come 2019. Information reaching the Daily Times from top sources confirm that the Ex Nigerian Vice President will register at the Ward tomorrow (Saturday) in a bid to begin his preparation towards being Africa’s most populous nation’s next leader. Atiku denounced the All Progressives Congress (APC) (Nigeria’s ruling party) in a statement he issued on Friday morning, stating he took the decision after consulting “God, his family members and supporters”. He complained about the situation of things in the ruling party, recalling how the founding fathers of the APC reached out to him to join the party. Atiku’s statement is reproduced in full below: On the 19th of December, 2013, I received members of the All Progressives Congress at my house in Abuja. They had come to appeal to me to join their party after my party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had become factionalized as a result of the special convention of August 31, 2013. The fractionalization of the Peoples Democratic Party on August 31, 2013 had left me in a situation where I was, with several other loyal party members, in limbo, not knowing which of the parallel executives of the party was the legitimate leadership. It was under this cloud that members of the APC made the appeal to me to join their party, with the promise that the injustices and failure to abide by its own constitution which had dogged the then PDP, would not be replicated in the APC and with the assurance that the vision other founding fathers and I had for the PDP could be actualized through the All Progressives Congress. It was on the basis of this invitation and the assurances made to me that I, being party-less at that time, due to the fractionalization of my party, accepted on February 2, 2014, the hand of fellowship given to me by the All Progressives Congress. On that day, I said “it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision” to accept the invitation to join the

All Progressives Congress. Like you, I said that because I believed that we had finally seen the beginnings of the rebirth of the new Nigeria of our dreams which would work for all of us, old and young. However, events of the intervening years have shown that like any other human and like many other Nigerians, I was fallible. While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalization, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced. Only last year, a governor produced by the party wrote a secret memorandum to the president which ended up being leaked. In that memo, he admitted that the All Progressives Congress had “not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight ‘change’ but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance”. Of the party itself, that same governor said “Mr. President, Sir Your relationship with the national leadership of the party, both the formal (NWC) and informal (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso), and former Governors of ANPP, PDP (that joined us) and ACN, is perceived by most observers to be at best frosty. Many of them are aggrieved due to what they consider total absence of consultations with them on your part and those you have assigned such duties.” Since that memorandum was written up until today, nothing has been done to reverse the treatment meted out to those of us invited to join the All Progressives Congress on the strength of a promise that has proven to be false. If anything, those behaviours have actually worsened. But more importantly, the party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth. A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people. I admit that I and others who accepted the invitation to join the APC were eager to make positive changes for our country that we fell for a mirage. Can you blame us for wanting to put a speedy end to the sufferings of the masses of our people? Be that as it may be, after due consultation with my God, my family, my supporters and the Nigerian people whom I meet in all walks of life, I, Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa, hereby tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress while I take time to ponder my future.

The Enugu Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Edward Zamber has said the commission is out at tackling the menace of hawking alcohol and hard drugs at motor parks describing hawkers as agents of darkness who are encouraging drivers to have accidents. Zamber stated this in Nsukka on Friday during the 2017 flag-off of Ember Months campaign rally titled “Right to life on highways, Not Negotiable”. Zamber who was represented by the state sector operation commander, Mr. Jude Eke advised motorists to resist the temptation of drinking alcohol and other things that can cause accidents when they want to drive. “We will continue to do our best to ensure safety on our roads but drivers and other road users should complement the commission’s efforts by doing their part,” he said He urged drivers and other road users to drive safely during the Ember months adding that FRSC would continue to do its best to ensure safety on the roads. In a remark, the Unit Commander, Nsukka Command, Mr. Shuaibu Bello, said ninety per cent of road accidents in the country are as result of human factors. He said some of the human factors that resulted in road crashes were drivers over-speeding, lack of concentration, tiredness, driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous over-taking. “Research has shown that human factors contribute ninety per cent of road accidents that have consumed many lives and rendered millions physically disabled. “This rally is aimed at educating our drivers, motor-cycle riders, tricycle drivers and other road users on how to imbibe safety culture while driving. “Drivers should know that is only when you are alive you will reach your destination and drive the next day, “he said He urged transporters and National Road transport workers to ensure that their drivers obey road signs and traffic laws by ensuring regular training of their drivers. “A good driver before embarking on any journey checks the state of his vehicle to ensure its worthiness for the trip. “Drivers should also ensure that motor mechanic that handles their vehicles are experts to avoid motor developing of faults in highways,” he said. Bello revealed that the country recorded 9494 accidents in 2016 out of which 2638 were fatal that resulted in 5053 people death, 5053 were serious while 1423 were minor cases, adding that some of the accidents were avoidable if proper cautions have been taken. Also in remark the chairman of Nsukka LGA, Dr. Ejike Asadu commended the FRSC for the rally noting that taken caution and obeying traffic rules helped immensely to prevent accidents Asadu however expressed disappointment that commercial drivers, motorcycle riders and tricycle drivers that were the target of the rally did not attend the rally in their numbers. “It’s only when you are safe that you will drive tomorrow and executes your plans in life “The FRSC is doing its best to help ensure sanity in our roads we should assist the commission as safety in our roads must be everybody’s concern.
