President Muhammadu Buhari dropped broad hints in far-away Abidjan on Tuesday evening that he may seek re-election in 2019. He dropped the hint while meeting with members of the Nigerian community in Cote d’Ivoire where he is currently participating in the 5th European Union-African Union Summit. The hints came hot on the heels of Buhari’s recent courting of APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, whom he took with him to Abidjan in the presidential jet. They sat side by side in the plane and photographers caught them smiling broadly during the flight.

Addressing Nigerians in Cote D’Ivoire, President Buhari said if the Nigerian community there informs other Nigerians that some state governors accompanied him to the meeting, that would earn him more votes in the future. He said, “First, I want to apologize for keeping you for too long, sitting. This is because I insisted on the governors attending this meeting. This is why I came along with them so that when we’re going to meet you, when you’re going to meet the rest of Nigerians, if you tell them that their governors were in the accompany of the president, I think that will be another vote for me in the future. I’m very pleased that they were able to turn up.” His reference to earning more votes in the future was widely interpreted to mean he will seek a second term in office.

The president caused another stir at the event when he said APC National Leader Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, who was present at the occasion, provided him with a piece of information that he was not aware of until then. Buhari repeatedly thanked Tinubu for providing him with the information which he described as “very beautiful.” He also referred to Tinubu as “our leader,” even though he said last year that he himself is APC’s national leader.

Buhari did not however disclose the “beautiful information” that he got from the former governor of Lagos State. He said, “I also thank our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He has brought me a very beautiful piece of information which I was not aware of it until I sat down and read it this evening (Tuesday night). Thank you very much for your hard work and I will discuss that paper with you.”

Buhari also said his recommendation of Akinwumi Adesina for the presidency of the African Development Bank confirmed the statement he made during his inaugural speech that he belongs to everybody and to nobody. He said, “The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), who forgot to mention that he was serving in the PDP government as minister but all the same I picked him and recommended him for AfDB. I think it emphasized what I said during my swearing in that I’m for everybody, I’m for nobody. As long as you are a Nigerian, be prepared to be on the receiving end from me.”

The Federal Government has suspended the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mr. Mounir H. Gwarzo, from office over allegations of corruption.
The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, in a statement Wednesday said Gwarzo’s suspension was to allow for an unhindered investigation of several allegations of financial impropriety levelled against him..

The statement, signed by Patricia Deworitshe, the ministry’s Deputy Director, Press, said the suspension is in line with the Public Service Rules (PSRs) 03405 and 03406.
“The Honourable Minister has set up an Administrative Panel of Inquiry (API) to investigate and determine the culpability of the director general.
“She has directed the suspended SEC director general to immediately handover to the most senior officer at the commission, pending the conclusion of investigation by the API”, the statement said.
Suspended along with Gwarzo are two management staff of the commission - Mr. Abdulsalam Naif Habu, Head of Media Division and Mrs. Anastasia Omozele Braimoh, Head of Legal Department - who are also alleged to have engaged in financial impropriety in the commission.
Although Gwarzo’s suspension was made public after the close of business at the Nigeria Stock Market yesterday, investors may react to the news negatively today and there could be panic in the market which will in turn affect trading.
Speaking with our reporter on phone yesterday night, a capital market expert, Malam Attahiru Maccido, said the market would definitely react to the news of suspension negatively when trading commences today.

Maccido, who is one of the experts at the Abuja-based Buraq Capital Limited, also said the negative trend might likely drag till tomorrow.
“What and what the government and other stakeholders do in the next few hours or even days will determine when the negative trend will end,” he said.
Another expert who pleaded anonymity said: “Investors will surely express concern over the suspension because of fraud allegation against the Director General of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mounir Gwarzo. How exactly the market will react, sincerely, I can’t say but the reaction will definitely have a multiplier effect on the market.”
Daily  Trust reports that the suspended director general was alleged to have perpetrated a variety of fraudulent activities since his appointment by former President Goodluck Jonathan for a first term of five years on May 22, 2015.

Some Nigerian foreign-trained doctors yesterday narrated how irregularities marred their recently conducted 16-week induction course for them to be licenced to practice in the country.
The foreign-trained doctors, numbering over 200, who were part of those said to have failed the examination for the induction, said the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) had from the beginning set out to fail most of them.

During a meeting with the Senate Committee on Health chaired by Sen Lanre Tejouso (APC, Ogun) yesterday in Abuja, one after the other, the medical doctors narrated how they were treated unjustly even as they said the results of the final examinations they took were manipulated.
This is even as the Senate health committee, which is in receipt of a petition by the parents of the affected doctors, said it would come up with a position on the matter next week.
Accompanied by their parents, the doctors who trained in countries such as Egypt, Ukraine, US, UK, Russia, Sudan, China, The Caribbean, among others, demanded justice. The exams took place between November 15 and 17.
A female doctor who first spoke, told the committee that they were shocked to discover that the examinations were completely out of the curriculum.

A total of 680 doctors sat for the examinations but only about 240, representing 35 percent, were said to have passed, while 440 of them (65 percent), reportedly failed.
Two of the doctors lost their lives while trying to see justice, the panel heard. The doctors also said one of them, who was given a scholarship during his second year of study abroad due to his performance, is said to be among those that failed.
“We attended the course which was for three months. At the end of the programme, the first exam we took was a computer-based exam. We were shocked to discover that the exam was completely out of the curriculum. A lot of people cried because of the uncertainty. A lot of people that made up their minds to re-sit the exam surprisingly passed. We need to know the criteria used in marking. There’s no standard. A lot of people were robbed, some had mental problems,” the female doctor said.
