The incumbent Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, who is also the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance coasted home with a landslide victory in Saturday’s Anambra governorship election.

Obiano, who won in all the 21 local government areas of the state, floored his arch rivals, Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress (Anambra East) and Oseloka Obaze of the Peoples Democratic Party (Ogbaru) in their hometowns.

The Independent National Electoral Commission through the Returning Officer, Prof. Zanna Akpago, had declared Obiano the winner of the November 18, 2017 governorship election at the commission’s office in Awka on Sunday.

A native of Uga in the Aguata Local Government Area, Obiano polled 234,071 votes to beat Nwoye (APC), who came a distant second with 98,752 votes.

The PDP governorship candidate (Obaze), who lost in Ogbaru, his local government area to Obiano, came third in the November 18 contest with 70,293 votes.

The candidate of the United Progressive Party and former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka, came fourth with 7,903 votes.

While Obiano polled 6,615 votes in Ogbaru LGA, Obaze garnered 4,416 votes with Nwoye of the APC getting 3,415 votes.

In Aguata, where a former governor of Central  Bank of Nigeria, Charles Soludo, hails from, Obiano got 13,167 as against Nwoye’s 5,807 and Obaze’s 4,073, a result that reflected Soludo’s support for the incumbent governor.

Obiano surprisingly won in former governor Peter Obi’s local government area, Anaocha as he (Obiano) garnered 11,237 votes, while the PDP (Obi’s party) with Obaze polled 6,554. APC’s Nwoye got 5,297.

It was, however, in Anambra East, Nwoye’s local government area, that the incumbent governor’s prediction of a landslide victory for himself and his party manifested as he took a large chunk of the votes in the area.

Obiano got 20,510 votes in Anambra East, where a son of the soil, Nwoye, polled 5,248 votes and Obaze got 1,132 votes.

Some residents of Isheri, Lagos State, on Saturday went on the rampage at the Isheri Divisional Police Station after the corpse of a 37-year-old tricycle rider, Adama Onikoyi, was recovered from a river in the community.

A team of policemen from the station had reportedly raided the neighbourhood around 10pm on Thursday during which they chased the father of four into the river, where he drowned.

But the Lagos State Police Command said the indigene of Ibadan, Oyo State was a traffic robber, adding that he jumped into the river to evade arrest.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Adama was accosted by one of the cops on Wilma Street, where he lived, shortly after he returned from work.

It was gathered that he declined following them to the station on the grounds that he did not commit any offence.

He was said to have managed to escape and flee towards the river.

She said she became apprehensive when he did not return after an hour.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said plans are at advanced stages to generate constant electricity for residents of the state in 2018.

He noted that the state government had already devised strategies to short-circuit power generation, transmission and distribution to ensure there was “24/7 power supply to residents.”

Ambode spoke at a recent interactive session with members of the business community and informal sector, a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Haruna, said on Sunday.

“Presently, we have less than 1,000MW in Lagos and the fundamental issues remain with generation, transmission and distribution. Transmission is still owned primarily by the Federal Government. But in Lagos State, we have become creative and we have done Independent Power Project through which we were able to generate 47.5MW which was distributed short-circuiting transmission.

“So, if it works, does it look like a template we can now use to get power freedom or what we call power security? If we say we are the fifth largest economy in Africa and we are not in control of how power is generated in an economy that wants to move from fifth to third, then something is wrong.

A pro-Lamido group, under the aegis of National Volunteers for Lamido, on Sunday described the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as “a total disaster,” saying it had failed in the management of the economy, foreign relations and the fight against graft.

The group’s position is contained in a statement by its National Coordinator, Umar Hadeja. The statement was issued in response to a comment by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

A former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, had in an interview with a national newspaper faulted the anti-corruption posture of the Federal Government. In response to that, Shehu lambasted Lamido.

But Hadeja in the statement on Sunday, said, “Clearly, Garba Shehu’s attempted response to the said Sule Lamido interview is another classic example of the PR disaster and liability that he now represents for the Buhari administration.
