National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has said the exit of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, from the party will strengthen the ruling party  in the 2019 general elections.

Oyegun said contrary to the speculations, Atiku’s exit will not trigger any exodus.

The national chairman spoke at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, yesterday, as his investiture as the national life grand patron the Association of Former Local Government Chairmen and Counsellors.

Deputy National Chairman (South), Segun Oni and National Auditor, Chief George Moghalu.

Addressing the association, Oyegun warned them not to be like the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which, he alleged, has eroded its credibility by being reduced to an endorsement group of one election or the other.

“Let nobody fear that the defection of the former vice president is going to lead to any deluge.

“ If anybody wants to defect, the day you are defecting is the day you bring out your heavy guns; not later.

“When you stand and they look at your right and left, they say, ‘Ah! This man has done something great.’ So, don’t ever be afraid that there is going to be any massive defection.  As a matter of fact the contrary is the case. The APC is growing in strength on a daily basis. Anybody who is anybody is virtually with the APC today. The reality is, outside the APC, there is no other party that is truly settled, not even the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). They are still fighting about how to get a chairman and the rest of it. Today, they say money has come to buy the chairmanship position. So, it is something you should take pride in… It is just that the remnants of the PDP have found their voice, so, they are screaming very loud and we think the whole country is upside down. It is not. The country is making steady progress and, your party is growing on a daily basis.” Oyegun said.

Speaking during the investiture, the association’s National Coordinator, Hon. Mike Omohimua described Oyegun as a man of high intellect and political pedigree, who deployed his “political doggedness and experience to rescue Nigeria from collapse,” in the hands of the immediate-past PDP administration.
Regardless,    Atiku has visited the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata House, in Abuja.
He formally returned to the party on December 3.
Atiku arrived the party’s national secretariat about 11.58am, yesterday,  accompanied by his supporters and  was received by members of the party’s National Caretaker Committee.

Senate has mandated an Ad hoc Committee on Review of National Security Infrastructure to investigate human rights abuses by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

The committee was also mandated to make relevant recommendations and revert to the Senate.

The chamber’s resolution was sequel to a point of order by Senator Isa Misau. Misau noted that, in line with the Police Act and Regulation, the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, (Force CID) is the highest investigative arm of the NPF.

“For effective and efficient administration, the department is divided into 14 sections for which the SARS is one of them. The squad is supposed to be a section in each state CID, with sole responsibility of handling armed robbery cases and answerable to the state Commissioner for police.

“In the last few months, I have received several petitions from my constituents against SARS and it varied from extra-judicial killings, brutality and torture. The incidences are not isolated as many people have been sharing their experiences.

“Today, they are being controlled in the operation, the control is from the Force headquarters, which is not supposed to be. It  is supposed to be headed by a commissioner of police, in the force CID.”

Misau also alleged that in some cases, SARS is deployed to serve other than their terms of engagement.

“SARS is used to intimidate opponents and sometimes politicians. Sometimes, you find that the federal SARS goes to a state and arrests people, without making reference to the commissioner of police. They (would) bring them to Abuja and detain them.

“Mr. President (referring to Senate President, Bukola Saraki), we have to do something about SARS, it shouldn’t be under the Operations Department, it is supposed to be under Investigation.”

The lawmaker further stated that findings showed that the incidences were not isolated, as many people had been sharing their experiences online.

“I am aware that in 2015, then Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, had, due to incessant reports of abuses by the Force, split SARS into two units; with a view to check human rights abuses. This, indeed, was to ensure that officers cannot arrest and investigate the same case.”

Misau, however, said the abuses continued, irrespective of the minor reforms by Arase.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike,  has described The Sun Governor of the Year 2017 Award as a great recognition, which will serve as a big motivation  for his administration to do more in the socio-economic development of the state and people.

The Sun Awards will hold on February 24, 2018 at the Convention Centre of Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, where 22 Nigerians would be honoured for their outstanding achievements.

Speaking in Port Harcourt yesterday when the Management team of The Sun Publishing Limited, led by its Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief, Mr  Eric Osagie, visited to present a letter notifying him of his emergence as Governor of the Year, Wike said The Sun Awards had proved to be a worthy recognition for people genuinely making the difference.

He said as long as the awards were based on projects delivery, Rivers State would continue to emerge victorious.

Wike  stated: “This award will spur us to do more,  be much better,  to focus and continue to provide the necessary infrastructure for the development of our State.

“If you recollect, last year when you came to present letter notifying us of this award for 2016,  I did say  if it was on merit, we will keep winning because we are committed to catering to the needs of our people.

“I want to thank you for coming again to present this letter notifying us that we have been chosen for this award.  You  found out that we have done well.  From January next year,  before we celebrate our third anniversary or Democracy Day, we will commssion series of projects. We are not tired of working. That is why we are in office.”   Governor Wike said the Managing Director of Julius Berger recently expressed surprise at the level of infrastructure development in the state,  which he noted was unprecedented.

“That is true. For us,  we have no choice than to work and put in our best,” he said.

The governor used the occasion to reiterate his position that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has nothing good to offer Nigerians.

He said the trending directive of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris,  to overhaul SARS had vindicated him that operatives of the police unit  were involved in unwholesome activities.

“SARS  is being prepared for the rigging  of elections in 2019. Time has come for people to  resist these people  because  they cannot  kill everyone.

“SARS has not helped in Rivers State. Rather, they perpetrate bad activities.  With the sustained activities of SARS, Nigeria is heading for disaster,” he said.
