The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is one party that many Nigerians love to hate. Registered in 1998, the party won the 1999 presidential election, and also produced many governors and local government chairmen across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), If the lifespan of the party is to be shared among the chairmen it produced, each of them spent an average of 13 months in power and of all the leaders it produced, only few had a glorious exit; most of them were forced out of office in controversial circumstances. Despite that, the position of chairman of a national party like the PDP is only second to that of the President if the party is able to capture power and that perhaps accounts for the interest and desperation that many have exhibited in their quest to hold this position Those that have held this exalted position include the late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, who was the protem chairman in 1998, Chief Solomon Lar, Chief Barnabas Gemade, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Ahmadu Ali, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, Dr. Ezekwesilieze Nwodo, Dr. Haliru Bello‎ Mohammed, Alhaji Kawu Baraje‎, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, Prince Uche Secondus, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and Senator Ahmed Makarfi. With the PDP National Elective Convention coming up on Saturday, December 9, all eyes are on the opposition party. The opposition PDP needs a vibrant new chairman in order to reinvent itself as the country heads into election season, and the challengers are increasingly being confronted with what stakeholders allude to as pragmatic political permutations. Delegates are also said to be moving en masse to Abuja for the historic convention. For a party desperate to recover from the impunity that stakeholders claim drove it from power in 2015, it is worth a look at the leading candidates for the plum job.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has assured that Nigerians will soon appreciate the roles of judiciary as the reform put in place beginning to yield positives results. He said that Nigerians and others who make use of the courts will in no distant time begin to experience a better judiciary. Justice Onnoghen stated this in Abuja on Wednesday during a retirement ceremony organized for former Executive Secretary of National Judicial Council (NJC), Danladi Halilu, who retired from the council in August this year. The CJN said, “This event is designed to honour retired staff of the NJC. To give them hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hereby commend them for making positive perception of judiciary. “In no distant time, Nigeria will come to appreciate the role of the NJC. The nation’s judiciary will soon be better with all the ongoing reforms that are have been put in place. “The Judiciary and all the agencies under it should adhere strictly to the code of conduct, as the judiciary under my watch will not condole any act of deviance”. Responding, Halilu commended the various ongoing reforms in the judiciary. He called for the inclusion of lower courts in the Federation in the ongoing reforms agenda, so as to achieve meaningful success in the entire justice delivery sector. Halilu ‎said there is need for lower courts to turn in their returns of cases to their various State Judicial Service Commissions and the Judicial Service Committee of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), has reacted to the petition written to President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo demanding a thorough investigation into the disappearance of the N301billion proceeds from the privatisation exercise from 1999 to 2011. The BPE, in a statement on Wednesday by the Head, Public Communications, Chukwuma Nwokoh, described the demand and petition as “Curious,” as it amounted to dredging “up a six-year report and attempting to give it the air of infallibility.” While many groups, financial experts and stakeholders who knew the mind-boggling corruption that continues to be swept under the carpet by the BPE acquiesced to SERAP’s demand, BPE said, it was a wasted exercise since many years have gone by over the issue. This latest controversy over bids to unearth what has been described as cesspool of corruption in one of the core agencies of the government stemmed from Senate’s report after painstaking investigation by its Ad-hoc Committee on Investigation of the Privatisation and Commercialisation Activities of the BPE from 1999 to 2011. While it was noted that members of the committee wept after knowing the level of corruption, as well as the brazen and indiscriminate acquisition of government properties, BPE says it’s too late to revisit it. The BPE condemned SERAP over the petition saying, “We again reject the conclusions of the report which may have been aimed at tainting the activities of the reform agency,” referring to the Senate Ad-hoc Committee report. But members of the public said the current administration has no excuse than to revisit the privatisation exercise, otherwise it would further raise concern about official conspiracy and negligence.
