Though the excitement of participative deliberation was pervasive among the editors, having to take a hard decision on distinguished Nigerians who have excelled in their different walks of life, it was a tough decision for the management and editors of The Daily Times. The board of editors of The Daily Times including the Chairman/ Publisher, Mr. Fidelis Anosike and the Group Managing Director, Mr. Noel Anosike, had to contend with the realisation that the nominees for the 2017 Daily Times Award were quite astounding in their achievements and contributions to the greatness of the country and uplift of the mankind. It was a long night and memorable occasion. The event of Thursday, December 28, 2017, would continue to linger on among the participants of the decision to choose the award winners. And when the issue of who would emerge as the winners among the nominees commenced, it was an anti-climax as the deliberation was frank, engaging and down to earth. In the end, the winners emerged through painstaking nomination and voting.

The United Nations Children’ Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that approximately 20,210 babies were born in Nigeria on New Year’s Day. According to the report, the births represented the third largest population of newborns in the world on January 1, 2018. The international body said that nearly 386,000 babies were born worldwide on New Year’s Day, 90 percent of which were recorded in less developed regions. Globally, over half of these births are estimated to take place in nine countries, according to UNICEF. These are: India, 69,070; China, 44,760; Nigeria, 20,210; Pakistan, 14,910; Indonesia, 13,370; United States, 11,280; Democratic Republic of Congo, 9,400; Ethiopia, 9,020; and Bangladesh, 8,370. UNICEF said while many babies would survive, some would not make it past their first day. Speaking on the matter, Stefan Peterson, UNICEF’s chief of health, said the agency is challenging nations around the world to make sure more newborns survive their first days of life. “This New Year, UNICEF’s resolution is to help give every child more than an hour, more than a day, more than a month – more than survival,” he said. Also in 2016, an estimated 2,600 children died within the first 24 hours every day of the year, according to the UN agency. UNICEF reported that for almost two million newborns, their first week was also their last. In all, 2.6 million children died before the end of their first month, the global children’s agency said.

A 60-year-old woman, identified as Jokotade Olaniyi,on New Year Day, narrowly escaped death when fire engulfed a one-storey building and a bungalow in Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State. Our correspondent who visited the scence, gathered that the fire which razed the two buildings located at 43 Ifelodun Street, Bariga, started at about 7:30 pm, on Monday when many of the occupants had travelled for Christmas. The two buildings were said to have over 23 apartments.

Narrating her experience, Olaniyi told Daily Times that the fire started when a gas cylinder exploded from one of the apartments of the storey building which quickly spread to the bungalow beside it. She explained: “ I was woken up from sleep by the sound of the explosion. Before I could figure out what was going on, I started hearing fire, fire. By the time I ran out of my room, fire had consumed the whole of the storey building. At this point, getting out of my apartment was a problem beacuse the entrace was covered with thick smoke. But with the help of neighbours, I managed to escape as the fire shortly spreads to the bungalow and my apartment”. The 60-year-old woman told our correspondent that she lost everything to the inferno while appealing to the Lagos State Government to assist her. An occupant of the storey building who identified himself as Chike Osuagwu, whose wife and kids travelled to his village for Christmas also narrated his ordeal.

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has introduced dynamic programmes that have touched the lives of the people in the state. He also brought drastic improvement in the security of lives and property of the citizens and residents of Anambra State . From 1970 to date, after the civil war, security in Onitsha and environs and indeed the entire Anambra State has been a very intractable issue as criminals from time to time had hijacked the state, compelling the people to live in permanent fear. At a time, the crime became too rampant that people had to resort to sleeping in churches. Even during the military, violent crime was almost the order of the day, hence the setting up of Armed Robbery and Fire Arms Tribunals which tried and executed those found guilty of robbery cases. But that could not solve the problem of crimes in the state. At a time in Anambra State, a gang of robbers were accosting luxurious buses plying from any part of East to Lagos. Immediately they stepped into Anambra State from any other part of the East, these organised robbers unleashed bullets on the bus from every side, which led to loss of several innocent souls of passengers during that period. Banks, fillings stations and individuals were back again to their cherished ones. In fact, at a time an attempt was made on the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, which failed. But Governor Obiano has changed this infamous action immediately he assumed office, adopting innovative strategic measures. Nobody knew the secret employed by this accountant and banker turmed politician but Obiano employed civilsed method, using the police and installing of street lights at strategic places in the state especially from Onitsha Bridgehead to Borromeo Hospital Round About through old road to Amawbia in Awka.
