Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has disclosed that the Federal Government will establish Agro-Rangers all over the federation to protect investments in Agriculture. This development is at the heels of the persistent clashes between farmers and herdsmen where farm lands valued at billions of Naira have been destroyed by cows and several farmers across the federation have lost their lives. This development, he said, has also led to apathy among farmers and if unchecked will ultimately lead to chronic food shortages. In a stakeholders meeting in Abuja on Monday convened by the Minister of Interior, Lt- Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazzau (rtd), Ogbeh said that the protection of Agricultural investment has become very necessary since both farmers and herdsmen lay claim to the land and utilise it both for planting of crops and feeding of animals. According to him, both farmers and herdsmen belong to the same constituency and all are affected by the tragedy. He said: “It is becoming clear that there are criminals who are bent on causing troubles, taken to criminality and those who are bent on making things extremely difficult for all of us. “We intend to unfold an agenda with the Ministry of Interior. We are establishing Agro-Rangers to carry out the duty of securing and protecting Agric investments wherever they exist. “Cattle colonies are also to be established like 5,000 hectares of land where water, adequate security and pasture will be provided. This will also give room for commercialisation of animal waste and cattle rustling will be completely eliminated”. The colony, he continued, will also include schools for the children of the pastoralists and it will completely eliminate nomadic living. “We do not want farmers to loose their crops, neither do we want herdsmen to loose their cattle.” The minister added that government has not done much for the herdsmen as other countries in Europe pay about 6 euros per day as subsidy on livestock. Ogbeh called on the media to desist from given religious and ethnic colouration to the violence. “Crime is crime. Nobody gains from violence. “I assure you that government is doing everything within its capacity to bring the situation under control,” Ogbeh assured.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC has said that its technical men have restored the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline (ELP), which came down last week as a result of a fire incident which disrupted gas supply to customers on the line including power generating companies. The Daily Times recalls that the fire incident has since close to a week now, caused major challenges to electricity distribution in Niger Delta, Egbin- Lagos, leaving homes, offices and businesses in total darkness, with consequential financial losses to them and the nation’s economy. But the electricity consumers are relieved as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which disclosed its ongoing repair works on Monday, said work on the pipeline followed the directive by the Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, to carry out an assessment of the damage with a view to getting a prompt solution. The Daily Times also recalls that a section of the ELP at Abakila in Ondo State blew up in flames on January 2, 2018 as a result of what the authorities attributed to bush fire. In a press statement issued by the Managing Director, Public Affairs, NNPC, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, the incident affected gas supply to customers in Ondo, Ogun and Lagos States with subsequent shutdown of a number of power plants in the areas. The corporation said that with the restoration of the ELP and resumption of gas supply, the affected power plants with a combined generating capacity of 1,143MW, would resume power generation. The power plants include: Egbin Power Plant in Lagos State; Olorunshogo Power Plant, Paras Power Plant in Ogun State; and Omotosho Power Plant in Ondo State.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday declined to stop National Assembly from probing the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) over the controversial and fraudulent reinstatement of sacked Abdulrasheed Maina, into the Federal Civil Service. Justice Binta Nyako declined to grant an order of interim injunction sought by the AGF that would have stopped the National Assembly from inquiring into the matter. Maina, the former Chairman, Presidential Pension Reform Task Team was dismissed from the Federal Civil Service Commission in 2013 after he absconded from duty following an alleged N1.6bn fraud uncovered . But he was recalled in a very controversial manner and deployed to the Ministry of Interior late last year on the reported advice of the AGF. Following public outcry that greeted his reinstatement, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered Maina’s sack and asked Winifred Oyo-Ita, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, to probe the embarrassing situation. Consequently, on October 24, 2017, the Senate mandated its committees on public service, internal affairs, anti-corruption, establishment and judiciary to probe the circumstances of Maina’s return to the country and the public service. It was learnt that the decision of the NASS, particularly the Senate to conduct a forensic investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reinstatement of Maina prompted Malami to file a suit against NASS.
