Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said yesterday that herdsmen have declared war on Nigeria and urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop their activities without further evasiveness.
Soyinka, in a statement, entitled ‘’Impunity Rides Again’’, said the present administration should not make the mistake its predecessor made that gave vent to escalation of ongoing Boko Haram crisis in the North East. His declaration came as the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, also, yesterday, apologised to Benue people over his comments which described the killings in the state as a fallout of communal crisis and vowed to fish out the perpetrators and get them prosecuted. Similarly, the Indigenous People of Biafra, equally condemned the killing of innocent citizens by the herdsmen in the Middle Belt, pointing out that the nation had never witnessed this kind of murder since the APC came to power in 2015. It flayed alleged killing of youths at Igweocha, Rivers State, by security agencies in the riverine areas in the guise of looking for cult members, alleging that the killings were politically motivated. Army deploys troops Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army yesterday deployed special forces to Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa states, following serial attacks on the states by herdsmen. The Army in its twitter handle: #HQNigerianArmy, said the forces were deployed to secure vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, yesterday, raised the alarm that their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El Zakzaky, who had been in detention for over two years, may die in government custody, following a deterioration of his health. The alarm came on a day the Police again cracked down on protesting members of the group in Abuja.

Addressing a press conference  in Kaduna, yesterday, Chairman of the Resource Forum of the IMN, Prof. Abdullahi Danladi, said a recent visit by family members of the detained leader indicated that his health had taken a dive for the worse. According to him, the detained leader’s wife, who is also being held by government, has bullets lodged in her body that had not been extracted. He said: “Following a rare visit to our leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky, it was discovered that the health situation of the Sheikh has taken a nosedive for the worse. “He had suffered what turned out to be a stroke but the authorities illegally detaining him had kept a blind eye to his dire situation. “It emerged that his health condition suffered severe knocks in the past week, such that he was critically ill and was in urgent need of the best medical attention possible but Buhari administration is negligent about it. “He suffered slurred speech, weakness of the right side of the upper limb and general weakness of both lower limbs and, consequently, has been unable to walk or even stand for the past one week. The Sheikh is also known to be hypertensive for more than 10 years. “As we focus our attention on the deteriorating health of Sheikh Zakzaky we are not oblivious of the medical condition of his wife, Malama Zeenah Ibrahim. For reasons best known to the State Security Service, some of the bullets lodged in her body during the brutal attack of December 14, 2015, have not been extracted up till now.”

The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered an apartment in Ejigbo area of Lagos, suspected to be used as transit camp for child trafficking and sale. Six children, aged between three and 10, were found in the one-room apartment. The custodian of the children, one Comfort Awanaesan, was also apprehended in the process.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Imohimi Edgal, stormed the apartment, Tuesday evening, in the company of some senior police officers and officials of the Gender Unit of the command and others from the Ministry of Youths and Social Services. The invasion, according to Edgal, followed complaints by residents that children were being kept by a woman, who is not their biological mother, in a poorly-ventilated one-room apartment. Edgal said: “We are concerned about the children’s welfare, because we must first ascertain what happened to them while here: were they abused, sold into slavery or sold as domestic help? “This is not an orphanage or day care centre. We want to know where she got the children from because we are concerned generally about child abuse.”
