NAIJA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [2ND FEBRUARY, 2018].

Below are the headlines found on The Tribune Online Newspaper for today, Saturday, 2nd February, 2017.

Sat, 03 Feb 2018
FORMER President Goodluck Jonathan said on Friday that a statement credited to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola on February 1 has vindicated the former administration on the management of the economy.

Jonathan, in a statement on his behalf by his Special Assistant on New Media, Reno Omokri, said that the previous declarations that President Muhammadu Buhari inherited a collapsed economy were demolished when Fashola stated clearly on February 1 that Buhari inherited one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

The statement indicated that since Buhari took over on May 29, 2015, both the President and the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed had projected false narratives to the effect that the Jonathan administration and the Peoples Democratic Party, destroyed Nigeria’s economy and handed over a collapsed polity.

The statement quoted the President’s spokesman, Garba Shehu as saying on August 14, 2017, thus:

“With due respects to the former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan, these are the facts about the economy you left behind, in case you have forgotten. I hope this will help to erase the wrong statement credited to you at your party, the PDP Convention at the Eagle Square last weekend that you handed to President Buhari a robustly healthy economy. Let me start by reasserting an obvious statement, which is that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was handed an economy ravaged by years of mismanagement and corruption.”

It also quoted Lai Mohammed as also saying on January 26, 2018, as saying in an interview with the Sun: “I think it will be tragedy for this country for PDP to come back because they have not even apologised to the nation for how they had destroyed our economy,
destroyed our infrastructure, destroyed our quality, and so far from their campaign, ask them how they will do it better when they get there.”

The statement, however, indicated that Jonathan was vindicated when Fashola in an attempt to provide excuses for lack of stable electricity in the country made a slip that justified Jonathan’s government.

The statement read: “However, in keeping with the principle that no matter how far and fast falsehood has travelled, it must eventually be overtaken by truth, Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, has exposed both his boss, President Buhari, and his colleague…Lai Mohammed, as liars who will say anything, no matter how untrue, to cling to power and demonise former President Jonathan and the PDP.

“Speaking on February 1, 2018, at a civil society engagement workshop on the Power Sector Recovery Programme in Abuja, Fashola in trying to defend himself from allegations of ineptitude as regards the epileptic power supply in the country ended up vindicating both Dr Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP, albeit unintentionally.

“At that event, Mr Fashola said: “We hear all our so-called experts who say (non-availability of) power is why the economy of Nigeria is not growing. That is not factual and it is not correct. At the time when we had less power in 2013 and 2014, the economy of this country was growing at seven per cent per annum.

“We had less power then than we have now, but the economy was growing.”

“Nigerians can now see that Mr Fashola, in a Freudian slip, was made by God, to expose the truth that his boss, his party and his colleagues have been trying to suppress for the past three years, namely that former President Jonathan developed and grew Nigeria’s economy at an unprecedented and consistent growth rate of over 6% per annum and handed over a thriving economy that was projected by CNNMoney to be the third fastest growing economy in the world when Dr Jonathan handed over power to President Buhari.

“Unfortunately, due to the ineptitude of the Buhari administration, a booming economy became an economy in recession in just one year under the All Progressive Congress.

“And this is not the only recent example of the vindication of former
President Jonathan by the Buhari administration.

“Only recently, lying Lai Mohammed responded to the letter by former President Olusegun Obasanjo by claiming that the Buhari administration had increased the nation’s foreign reserve from the $24 billion it met it to $40 billion.

“The question for Lai Mohammed is this: From who did Buhari inherit the $24 billion? From ghosts? From Killer Fulani herdsmen?

In light of the vindicating statements by Raji Fashola, I hereby call on both President Muhammadu Buhari and Lai Mohammed to tender an unreserved apology to former President Jonathan and the PDP and to henceforth commit to returning Nigeria’s economy at least to the state that they met it when Dr Jonathan handed over power to them on May 28, 2015.”

FOLLOWING the triggering of the Open Data Initiate of the Automatic Exchange of Tax  Information (AETI) on January 1, 2018, Nigeria has begun to receive hoardes of information from other countries on bank accounts, and property owned by Nigerians abroad.

Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, confirmed this on Friday in Abuja during the presentation of Progress Report on Tax Laws Reform by the Vice Chairman of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee, Mr Taiwo Oyedele.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the data being supplied to Nigeria by foreign countries under the AETI, to which the country became a party in January 2018.

“The data received in Nigeria with regard to overseas assets held by Nigerians has been impressive and will underpin a long term improvement in the nation’s tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ration and in turn, will improve life for the masses.

“The data on bank accounts and property and trusts, which has come automatically from a number of countries is being used to support the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) by allowing the tax authorities to check the accuracy of declarations received.

“The Federal Government is also using the data to generate ‘nudge’ letters which are being sent to those identified as being potential tax defaulters,” said Adeosun, while responding to questions raised by newsmen during the submission of progress report on tax laws reform.

She disclosed that Nigeria had written to a number of countries to request specific information about offshore trusts and bank accounts held by its citizens.

The minister advised users of offshore structures to take advantage of VAIDS to regularise their taxes before the expiry of the amnesty programme.

“The offshore tax shelter system is basically over. Those who have hidden money overseas are being exposed and whilst Nigerians can legally keep their money anywhere in the world, they must first pay any taxes due to the Nigerian Government so that we can fund the needs of the masses and create jobs and wealth for our people.

“The moral argument against illicit financial flows and tax evasion and the strong international co-operation are such that every Nigerian tax payer should do the right thing. The needs of our people for development override any other argument against payment of tax,” she stated.

Adeosun stressed the need for a sustainable revenue that could deliver infrastructural development for Nigeria and improve the tax to GDP ratio of the country.

She assured that the Federal Government would build a robust tax system and implement the recommendations by the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC) on tax laws reform.

Earlier in the address, the NTPIC Vice Chairman, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, who represented the chairman, said the committee considered three major policy documents namely, the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), the National Tax Policy and Ease of Doing Business Plan.

He disclosed that the committee agreed that tax reforms should align with overall government objectives as articulated in these documents, such that every action or recommendations would promote and catalyse the realisation of overall objectives.

The committee, according to him, identified the seven major tax areas that would have the highest impact. These include: Company Income Tax (CIT), Value Added Tax (VAT), Customs & Excise Tariff (CET), Personal Income Tax (PIT), Pension Contributions, Industrial Development Income Tax Relief (IDITR); and Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

He disclosed that the proposed changes to the tax laws would achieve the following specific objectives: increase and diversify government revenue, simplify paying taxes and doing business, promote micro, small and medium enterprises, protect most vulnerable persons in the society, and remove obsolete, ambiguous and contradictory provisions in the law.

Oyedele added that the committee’s work resulted in two executive orders and five amendment bills.

A midnight fire wiped off property worth millions of naira including a block of rooms around the Odoota area of Ilorin metropolis, Kwara State on Thursday night.

Saturday Tribune gathered that the affected building located along Kilometre 1, Lagos-Ogbomosho bye pass, was used mainly as office and workshop by some artisans.

The affected occupants, who bemoaned their losses, have appealed for help from government and philanthropists to ameliorate their situation.

One of the victims, Alhaji Akindele Moshood, who said he lost one Toyota Hilux Van, Caterpillar spare parts, six generating sets, heavy duty tyres, fridges and other valuables including huge amount of  cash, said that the fire started around 11.00pm long after all of occupants had closed for the day.

Moshood, who is President of Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Kwara State chapter, said although eyewitness and neighbours helped to call men of the fire brigade in the state, their arrival was much too late to salvage the situation.

When our reporter visited the scene yesterday, officials of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, who owned the burnt Hilux Van that was under repair at the workshop, were seen inspecting the premises. They however refused to speak with newsmen on the incident.

Residents and eyewitnesses appealed to the state government to make the fire service more proactive in cases of emergency arguing that if the service had arrived on time the situation might have been saved.

Some of the victims of the incident were observed packing debris of their losses from the site as at the time of filing this report.
