Below are the headlines found on The Tribune Online Newspaper for today, Monday,  5th February, 2017.

A member of the seventh House of Representatives, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has formally announced his intention to contest the July 14 governorship race in Ekiti State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced that he has settled his differences with former Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Bamidele, who declared his intention at his native Iyin-Ekiti community in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, said APC leaders must field an experienced person to fly the party’s flag for the governorship election, so as not to fall into the trap of poor performance when elected.

The former Lagos commissioner described himself as “a thorough-bred technocrat, who has traversed every arm of government as a commissioner, a federal parliamentarian and lawyer, who was well-groomed for the coveted seat.”

On the occasion, Bamidele also unveiled the blueprint he dubbed: “Manifesto of Brighter Future for Ekiti”, which he said encapsulated his mission and vision for the state.

He was received by the chairmen of the two wards in the town, Opeyemi Ogundele and Adeuyi Folorunso, respectively. Bamidele told the party members that he had settled his rift with the Minister of Mines and Steel Development and former governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi.

“God in his own way has settled my differences with Dr Fayemi, so no more crisis and segregation. We are all one. There are no groups called Bibire or JKF, we are one APC and that we shall continue to exploit to rescue Ekiti from the dungeon of economic doldrums.”

Unveiling the contents of the manifesto, Bamidele stated that the blueprint consisted of programmes that would proffer solutions to the socio-economic problems pummeling the state due to bad governance brought to the fore by the present government.

“With what is happening today in Ekiti, it was clear and evident that the state is in pain and in dire need of a leader that has a scientific understanding of what governance is all about to redirect us to the path of a sustainable and viable Ekiti.

“I understand governance and I know that there are three arms which are: Executive, Judiciary and legislature. I have garnered experiences in all the facets and I have grown through the gamut to reach where I am today.

“In the executive arm, I served for 11 years in the government of Lagos State as Special Adviser and Commissioner and our records are there. I was elected as a member of House of Representatives in 2011 and this imbued me with deep knowledge of the legislature. And as a lawyer, I have practised as a Minister in the temple of justice for 26 years.

“I have executed programmes of government, I have made laws for the nation and I have helped in building a virile judicial arm, these make me a complete person and I can proudly say that I am the best for the job for no governor in the history of Ekiti had ever got this experience before election”.

Elaborating more on the manifesto, Bamidele said he was the first aspirant to unveil his blueprint for Ekiti before formal declaration, describing this as not only outstanding but novel in the state’s
political trajectory since the advent of democracy in 1999.

Assuring that the blueprint was scientifically structured to meet to Ekiti needs, Bamidele said: “Our projection is to make Ekiti the food basket of our dear nation because we have good soil and climatic conditions that favourably put us in a good stead to feed our nation.

“In this blueprint, we have ways to harness our mineral deposits in all parts of Ekiti, we have programmes for civil servants, teachers, aged people, youth and social development, Sports Development that explained vividly how sports has become a science, robust health programmes and conscious human capital development schemes to make Ekiti great.

The spokesperson to former president Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), Kassim Afegbua speaking on a Channels television programme on Sunday evening said that the statement accrued to the septuagenarian is not personalised to the incumbent president Muhammadu Buhari.

“I have since spoken with him (IBB) and he has said that the statement stands and that the kernel of that statement should be what informs public discourse and not people personalising it as if it were to be against the sitting president.”

“So, for him, he is not personalising his statement to the incumbent president but he is saying that as a country and as a stakeholder and a concerned Nigerian, the preponderance of opinions on the political landscape is such that people want younger generation of leaders and the older ones can offer advice to guide them,” Afegbua said.

He also disclaimed the statement released which asserted that the released statement by him (Afegbua) is not authorised by the former president.

“I don’t have an idea of who wrote the other statement but once I saw the description of IBB as GCON, I knew that couldn’t have emanated from him because IBB is GCFR.” He observed.

“The statement stands and I have so communicated to all media houses that they should respect that statement as coming from IBB. Those are his thoughts, it didn’t emanate from my head. We sat down, articulated them, we put them in perspective so that Nigeria can begin to interrogate the issues he raised in that statement,” Afegbua said.

Spokesperson to former President Ibrahim Babangida, Kassim Afegbua has maintained that his statement on behalf of Babangida stands, adding that it was fully representative of the former president’s thoughts.

Speaking on a Channels television programme on Sunday evening, against the backdrop of another statement credited to the former military president, Afegbua asserted that Babangida approved of the contents of the statement as what should inform public discourse.

He pointed to Babangida’s position on having a new generation of young Nigerians to lead the nation as his stance over the years.

According to Afegbua, obvious evidence that the other statement did not emanate from Babangida was the description of the former president as GCON, instead of GCFR.

“I extracted a commitment from him, got authorisation before I issued the statement. But, you know that IBB is for everyone, so people want to appreciate him more than he appreciates himself; people want to play the role of IBB.

“When this statement came on board and when some of his friends saw the twist of the reportage of the statement by the social media and how they sensationalised it, taking away the kernel of the contents of the statement, they felt that we were trying to put the former president on collision course with the current president.

“To that extent, they did a statement to deny his statement. I have since spoken with him (IBB) and he has said that the statement stands and that the kernel of that statement should be what informs public discourse and not people personalising it as if it were to be against the sitting president.

“I don’t have an idea of who wrote the other statement but once I saw the description of IBB as GCON, I knew that couldn’t have emanated from him because IBB is GCFR. Secondly, I arrived at Benin City at about 5.00 p.m., I was in Abuja when I issued that statement and after that, I had to catch my flight to Benin to engage in some other activities.

He added that “perhaps you may want to know that IBB began new breed politics in 1990 and so if he is saying that we should go back to new breed politics of the early 1990s, it is corresponding with his line of thoughts. I don’t know why anybody will think that I will issue a statement without obtaining that authority from him.
