Some governors on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are in a final push for Prince Uche Secondus to emerge as national chairman at the party’s national convention holding today in Abuja.
Secondus was deputy national chairman during the reign of Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu and became acting national chairman when Mu’azu threw in the towel on May 20, 2015.
Credible sources in the party said the governors led by Governor Nyesom Wike are insisting that Secondus, who is from Rivers State, returns as chairman while the vice presidential ticket should go to either the Southeast or Southwest.
A party leader close to one of the aspirants told our correspondent yesterday that Wike and his men were visiting some chairmanship contenders, pleading with them to step down for his anointed one.
He said the “powerful team” was also visiting some founding fathers and delegates to the convention to pave way for Secondus to win the race.
“Some governors are still scheming on how to field Secondus as their candidate at the convention. That, I can confirm to you on authority,” he said.
But presenting the list of delegates to the chairmanship aspirants yesterday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the chairman of the convention planning committee and governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, said the convention would reflect the will of delegates.
“We had a successful meeting with the nine aspirants for the office of national chairman and we briefed them on the electoral process.  We want to deliver a convention that is transparent and credible,” he said.
In adition, other party leaders including former President Goodluck Jonathan say they have no prefered candidate.
Concrete arrangements for hitch-free event
Today’s convention will produce new PDP National Working Committee (NWC) members after the Supreme Court saved the party from the prolonged leadership tussle between Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, told Daily Trust that all arrangements had been put in place to ensure a successful convention today.
Prince Adeyeye said over 2,800 delegates would exercise their franchise at the convention. He said security arrangements for the event were being handled by people with considerable experience on security matters.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar said last night that they had no anointed candidates for the office of PDP national chairman and other offices ahead of today's national convention.

‎The two party leaders in their separate statements said all the contestants were eminently qualified to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.

In a statement by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze‎, Jonathan said, "As the father of the party, ex-President Jonathan has no preferredcandidates for any of the positions and is prepared to work with all those that will emerge as members of the new NWC, to ensure that the
party regains its pride of place in the affairs of the nation."

He added, “The former President is therefore optimistic that the convention will produce a positive outcome that will help the PDP consolidate its position as the party with the best democratic ideals in the country.

“The former President is pleased with the dedication and enthusiasm of all party members towards building a strong PDP and wishes allparticipants successful deliberations, as they seek to freely elect members of the National Working Committee, that will lead the party for the next four years.

‎"Dr. Jonathan is impressed with the level of preparations for the convention, especially with the number of the candidates and the spread and vibrancy of the campaigns, which has established a new paradigm for intra-party elections, in the country."

Similarly, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar in a statement by his Media Office said  ‎he has no preferred candidates but interested in having a stronger PDP.

‎Atiku noted that the challenge before the delegates of the party was to vote according to their conscience.

“As our great political party sets forth to elect new set of national officers for the party Saturday (today) we must put the interest of the party first and I urge our delegates to vote for people they believe will better promote the interest of the party.

“I am an advocate of democracy and it is my belief that the best way to strengthen a political party is to promote the principle of internal democracy in the workings of the party.

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday said he did not oblige his family’s move to secure his freedom from prison when he was jailed for an alleged coup plot because he didn’t want to be free while late General Shehu Musa Ya’adua was still in jail.
He spoke at the 20th memorial lecture organized by the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Foundation in memory of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’adua.

Obasanjo said: “The life of the late Tafida Katsina, Shehu Musa Yar’adua typifies the answer to the question of and eloquent and reliable person who died 20 years ago and we are witnessing this gathering in his honour. In the last 20 years, I kept saying that I always remembered him as the best deputy I ever had when I was a military Head of State. Some of his friends and associates have remained loyal to his ideals since his departure. We had many good and sad periods together.”
The President of Sierra Leone, Mr. Ernest Koroma, said Yar’adua fought for the unity of the country and put the interest of Nigeria before his.
“His forgiveness and faithfulness endeared him to many as he was always smiling. I call on the younger generation to always emulate his good deeds which makes him fresh in the minds of many people,” Koroma said.
The Emir of Katsina who was represented by the Kaigaman Katsina, Alhaji Kabir Mashi, said the late General Yar’adua was a man of exemplary character who always tried to take the country to greater heights and he didn’t have a dull moment. He prayed for his soul to rest in perfect peace.
