Former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, in Abuja, began a subtle move to douse tension generated among members of the Peoples Democratic Party over the outcome of last Saturday’s national convention in Abuja.

The former President assembled a team of his loyalists, who it was gathered, would visit aggrieved aspirants with a view to appealling to them to forget about their grievances and work with the Uche Secondus-led members of the National Working Committee.

Though the party has a standing committee on reconciliation, headed by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, it was gathered that the former President decided to assemble his team as the Leader of the party.

Among those in Jonathan’s team are his former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN); a former Minister of State for Finance, Amb. Bashir Yuguda; a former Minister of Finance, Nanadi Usman; and his (Jonathan’s) bosom friend, King Turner.

Jonathan, on Monday, led his team to the house of a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Suleiman Abubakar, in Abuja.

Those in his entourage were Turaki and Turner.

The visit, which was described as unscheduled, was said to have taken Suleiman by surprise as he was said not to have been informed that the former President was visiting.

Suleiman had threatened to challenge the outcome of the convention in court, saying his name was technically omitted among those contesting the position of the National Publicity Secretary.

He had told The PUNCH on Sunday that he would go to court to challenge the outcome of the election into the position he wanted to occupy.

A source at the meeting said the former President asked him to sheathe his sword and let bygones be bygones.

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has reiterated his stance on internal democracy as opposed to the idea of giving automatic tickets to aspirants.

He said his party must not behave like the Peoples Democratic Party, which, according to him, has a penchant for giving automatic tickets to its members.

Tinubu, however, said his position should not be misconstrued by the Governor Rochas Okorocha-APC governors’ forum, saying he believed that governors had an important role to play in the emergence of the party’s candidates.

Tinubu was quoted as expressing these views in a statement on Monday by his media aide, Tunde Rahman.

According to Rahman, the statement was intended to clarify the misrepresentation in an interview that Tinubu granted journalists during his last visit to Akure.

Tinubu had been quoted as saying that the APC would not give President Muhammadu Buhari an automatic ticket for the 2019 presidential election.

Rahman noted that Okorocha had reacted to the statement credited to Tinubu, construing it as a slight on the APC governors who had endorsed Buhari for re-election in 2019.

While also speaking with journalists in Akure, Okorocha had said the governors were entitled to their right to endorse Buhari for re-election, wondering why Tinubu was “crying more than the bereaved.”

But Rahman said Tinubu did not attack the APC governors in the interview he granted journalists in Akure.

He said, “We note the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha’s statement. It is important that the record of what Asiwaju Tinubu said when approached by journalists during his last visit to Akure is accurate. Thus, I make this statement in the hope of clarifying a misinterpretation that seems to have taken hold in some quarters.

The 21 Ibadan kings, installed by the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, on August 27, 2017, have issued a dethronement notice to the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

The Olubadan and the Olubadan-in-Council fell out after the governor crowned them and some Baales in accordance with the report of the Justice Boade panel set up by Ajimobi to review the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

Olubadan’s Director, Media and Public Affairs, Adeola Oloko, told our correspondent that the palace had yet to receive any notice and that a response from the king would be communicated to the public at the appropriate time.

At a press conference addressed by the 21 kings at the Mapo Hall, Ibadan on Monday, the leader of the group, Oba Lekan Balogun, who is also the Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land, accused the Olubadan of taking unilateral decision on behalf of the ‘Olubadan-Kings-in-Council’ and inciting the people against the state government.

Among those who attended the conference were Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, Oba Eddy Oyewole, Oba Lateef Adebimpe, Oba Amidu Ajibade and Oba Kola Adegbola.

They said Olubadan’s action did not portray the true position of the relationship that existed between the council and the state government.

They also made reference to issues that led to a disagreement between the Olubadan-in-Council and the monarch.read more...

THE Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has urged his followers to rededicate themselves to God ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Amaechi spoke while recalling his ‘miraculous’ emergence as governor of Rivers State in 2007 during a special thanksgiving service to mark the 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court judgment that declared him the chief executive of the state.

The event was held at the Abundant Life Evangelical Mission in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The former governor relived his ordeal at the time and how God showed up for him when all odds were against him.

He said, “The truth is that we believed God. Some who didn’t believe left us just as they are leaving now. God told me that what He will do in Rivers State will tingle the ears, and I believed.

“We must all go back to God in faith and prayers. Those who want to leave can go. I have come to understand that God allow us to pass through these challenges to prove Himself. Now that they have left, for me, this is an opportunity for the youth.

“If we don’t pray, 2019 will be very far from us. If we don’t win 2019, it would be your fault, not anybody else. We go to God because He answers. We pray, then, go home and work. Back then, even in my father’s house in the village, there was a prayer team.

“We were so broke; we could not pay legal fees or children’s school fees. My wife prayed every day and night. I was fasting and praying for three months. I told God that I had a friend who had money. Please, make him remember me.
