Due to low investors’ confidence and foreign exchange scarcity in 2017, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in a bid to ease the challenges faced by Nigerians in April last year created the I & E FX window. In fact, data obtained by our correspondent from FMDQ OTC securities Exchange revealed that $0.61bn or N1865.66bn total turnover was traded in April; and increased by 114 per cent to $1.32bn or N403.92bn in May. Total turnover on the I & E FX window in June and July were $1.63bn or N498.78bn and $bn1.86bn or N569.16bn, respectively. Data from FMDQ OTC stated that total turnover gained momentum in August 2017, as newly created window reached $3bn per month. According to the data, I & E FX window in August was estimated at $3.54bn or N1.08trn, while in September, total trade on the I & E FX window closed at $4.61bn or N1.4trn. For October, it dropped to $4.30bn or N1.32trn. In addition, the total turnover trade on the I & E FX window in November and December were $4.51bn or N1.38trn and $3.27bn or N1tn, respectively. The I& E FX was created by the CBN to boost supply of foreign exchange into the nation’s economy, attract more investments and stabilise the foreign exchange market. CBN introduced the special window for investors, exporters and end-users of foreign exchange on April 21, 2017, as part of its efforts to deepen the FX market and accommodate all the foreign exchange obligations.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has warned Nigerians against politicizing herdsmen killings across the country in recent times, saying such interpretation can inflame passion from certain quarters, leading to unpredicted crisis in the country. Osinbajo spoke against the backdrop of rise in Boko Haram following politicization of the insurgents at the early stage of their heinous activities. He therefore urged Nigerians to be wary and not make similar mistake. Osinbajo spoke on Sunday during an inter-denominational church service for the 2018 Armed Forces Rememberance Day Celebration at the National Christian Centre, Abuja. He added that Nigerians must not politicize the development, saying that the development could degenerate the country’s fragile peace. He said, “ We must recognise that as dangerous and as deadly and heartless as these killings are, there is also the danger of our allowing politics to play a part as this could lead to what we sometimes say “pour petrol into an already burning fire”.

Insurance Association (NIA) has said that it has discovered that over 12 million Nigerian motorists carry fake insurance papers thereby robbing it of such benefits. Expectedly investigations carried by stakeholders in the insurance sector, revealed that many motorists prefer patronizing fraudsters for Insurance papers to obtaining valid certificate that would provide Insurance cover and compensation for road users in times of accident. Motor insurance, according to experts, however confers on motorists and others a lot of gains such as financial peace gained from cover while specific benefits derivable vary, based on types of coverage one obtains. Some examples are legal protection, insulation from huge expenses and preservation of vehicle value. But the Nigerian Insurance Association (NIA) boss, Mr. Sunday Thomas, who spoke to journalists in Asaba at the weekend, said that the development had not gone down well with operators in the industry who have decided to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to put an end to fake insurance business in Nigeria. He said that the industry had continued to record increase in the number of genuine insurance policies registered in its Nigerian industry data base, adding that “the vehicles on the Nigerian roads are to be between 16 million and 17 million but what we have registered in our data base is about 4.3 million, it is possible that insurance cover of some has expired and has not been renewed.
