NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE PUNCH NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [7TH JANUARY, 2018].

Below are the headlines found on The Punch Online Newspaper for today, Sunday, 7th January, 2018.

A  poll conducted by SUNDAY PUNCH has revealed that many Nigerians will not vote for President Muhammadu Buhari if he decides to seek re-election in 2019.

The poll with the title, “Will you vote for Buhari in 2019?” was conducted on The PUNCH website, www.punchng.com.

It gauged the opinions of Nigerians using three options for participants.

Those who want to vote again for the President in 2019 answered by clicking ‘YES’ while those with a contrary opinion clicked the ‘NO’ button. The last option was for those who were indifferent to Buhari’s choice.

The poll went live on Thursday, 5.48pm.

As of 11pm on Saturday, out of the 9,524 participants who took part in the poll, 58 per cent (5,519 respondents) said they would not vote for Buhari in 2019.

Up to 3,588 people, amounting to 38 per cent, said ‘YES’ to the poll while four per cent (417 votes) were indifferent to Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid.

The poll, which has been read over 10,000 times, confirmed that many Nigerians are not happy with the performance of the President.

Although Buhari has not officially declared his intention ahead of 2019, there are strong indications that he will seek a second term.

Confirming the speculation that Buhari might seek a second term in office, the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, had last week said although the President had not made up his mind on the 2019 presidential election, he must seek re-election because he had “done well so far.”

Shittu stated this in an interview with State House correspondents shortly after a meeting he had with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking specifically on whether the President will contest, Shittu said, “It goes without saying. I mean if you have a child who goes to primary school and he does well, he proceeds to secondary school and he does well, and you keep asking if he will be going to university. It goes without saying.

“By the grace of God, we, his (Buhari’s) ardent supporters, who appreciate his worth on behalf of millions of Nigerians, would urge him to recontest. I know he has not made up his mind but I can say that some of us can assist him in making up his mind.”

The police on Saturday confirmed that 10 people have again been killed by the Fulani herdsmen in the troubled Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The armed nomads reportedly attacked the agrarian community in the early hours of Saturday and hacked the deceased to death in their homes.

The fresh attack is coming barely six days after the herdsmen attacked five communities in Guma and Logo local government areas of the state and killed over 50 persons.

The latest incident, according to  sources, happened at Tombo village in Logo Local Government Area of the state.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the attackers invaded Ukemberagga/ Tsewarves and Tse Toradi, all in Tombo community in the Mbagber-Gaambe- Tiev district.

Another source claimed that the attackers launched the attack about 11pm on Friday and that it lasted till 5am on Saturday.

It was also gathered that the herdsmen invaded the village and burnt houses and shot sporadically, leading to the death of the victims.

Governor Samuel Ortom, who confirmed the incident through his Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Mr. Terver Akase, called for more deployment of security personnel.

Ortom lamented that the situation was getting out of hand, and urged the Federal Government to arrest the situation.

He said, “We restate that the FG must come to our aid by deploying more armed security men in those areas to avert further attacks.”

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said the party leadership was not involved in the compilation of the controversial list of appointees into the boards of federal agencies.

He explained that this led to the embarrassing situation which the government was dealing with.

Odigie-Oyegun said this while speaking to journalists at his residence in Abuja, on Saturday.

According to him, the party was initially contacted and it asked state chapters to submit 50 names each to be considered for such appointments.

He said the list was not submitted to the party secretariat but to a presidential committee headed by the sacked Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

He said, “It is pretty obvious that the party was not involved in the final stages of the compilation of that list. Yes, at the initial stage and I am talking about two years ago, we demanded that every state makes 50 nominations which was duly sent to the committee set up for the purpose at that time.

“Since then, a lot had happened. People have changed parties, people have died, we have had three new governors who were not there when the original list was compiled and so it was clear that there was a need for us to look at the final outcome.”

He noted that if the party leadership was involved in the final stage, some of the obvious errors would not have been made.

Odigie-Oyegun expressed hope that the party would be involved in the review and any further exercise.

The cost of petrol in the pricing template that is currently being reviewed will be determined by the rate of foreign exchange, oil marketers have said.

According to them, marketers will only import Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, if the rate of forex is suitable enough to encourage the importation of the commodity, despite the ongoing review of template by the Federal Government.

On Friday, the Federal Government announced that it had commenced a review of the pricing template for petrol and insisted that the commodity would sell at N145 per litre.

However, oil marketers on Saturday, said the Federal Government could retain the cost of petrol at N145/litre after reviewing the pricing template, but outlined the conditions that will make this feasible for importers of petrol.

The National Vice President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi, told SUNDAY PUNCH that it was possible to review the pricing template for PMS and retain the cost of the commodity at N145/litre.

He said, “Yes, anything government says it wants to do on this issue can be considered possible because the minister had already outlined three conditions.

“The first condition has to do with regulation and the next is for the NNPC to sell at a given rate to marketers who will now add their margins, while the third is through forex (foreign exchange).

“So if the government can give forex to marketers, then automatically marketers can be able to sell at the rate of N145/litre.
