NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE VANGUARD NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [10 JANUARY, 2018]

Below are the headlines found on The Vanguard Online Newspaper for today, Wednesday, 10 January, 2017.

GOVERNOR Samuel Ortom of Benue State, yesterday, met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, asking the President to do the needful in arresting and prosecuting the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore for genocide. No fewer than 71 persons, including women and children, were killed in night raids on some Benue communities since new year day, triggering condemnations across the country. He also rejected federal government’s proposal of establishing colonies for cattle herders, insisting that the only option was the establishment of ranches in line with global practices.

correspondents after meeting with the President for about two hours, equally stated that the herdsmen used Nasarawa State as a base to launch attacks on his state. But Nassarawa State governor,Tanko Al Makura in a swift reaction, dismissed Ortom’s allegation that the Fulani militia operated from a camp at Tonga in  Awe Local government Area of his state. These developments came as President Buhari ordered the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to relocate to Benue State to stem further attacks on the state.

A major review of Nigeria’s geopolitical alignment is set to take place tomorrow as the Yoruba nation engages the Igbo nation in an embrace that could alter the country’s political configuration in a way as never seen since the 1951 cross carpeting on the floor of the Western House of Assembly. The meeting of Afenifere, the apex Yoruba socio-cultural body with Ohaneze, the apex socio-cultural Igbo body in Enugu has remarkably also drawn the participation of South-South political elements. Vanguard could not confirm as at Press time the participation of South-South leader, Chief Edwin Clark, but his leading associates, including Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw, a former chairman of the Niger-Delta Development Commission, NDDC, are expected at the event. The seed for the summit was sown in the sacrificial death, 52 years ago, of Nigeria’s first military head of state, Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi and the first military governor of the defunct Western Region, Brig. Adekunle Fajuyi. Aguiyi-Ironsi was killed by soldiers mostly of Northern descent in Ibadan while visiting Fajuyi who paid the ultimate sacrifice for a guest when he opted to die with the visiting head of state. However, the twine that tied Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi in death was subsequently displaced by animosity and rivalry that have for most of the country’s existence, kept the two major nations as rivals always competing for an alliance with the North. The prod towards reconstructing the bridge follows the increasing chasm in the polity especially since the advent of the Muhammadu Buhari regime which in the opinion of many stakeholders in the South, has alienated the region through its appointments, policies, and programmes. Remarkably, one of President Buhari’s leading apologists, Mr. Osita Okechukwu dismissed tomorrow’s meeting as nothing new and perhaps as a distraction to Buhari’s long-term goal of restructuring Nigeria’s economic and political configurations. He said that quite unlike the agitations of the summiteers in Enugu tomorrow, that Buhari has positioned political restructuring that is to be canvassed tomorrow as a priority for his second term.

Trial judge, Justice Saliu Seidu, granted the order at the resume trial of the former permanent secretary. Counsel to Illoh,  Mr. T.S. Awana, had informed the court that his client had two applications, one challenging the jurisdiction of the court and the other for discharge of the earlier order of the court granting the interim for forfeiture of the properties in question. Awana added that the case being a civil case and the discussion between his client and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on the need to settle out of court, he would be withdrawing the two applications. Counsel to EFCC, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, in his submission, confirmed the move to settle out of court, stating that he would not be opposing the withdrawals of the two motions by the defendant and urged the court to strike out the motions for the coast to be clear for out of court settlement. Oyedepo further told the court that based on the discussion and agreement reached between the parties,  EFCC would be applying for the discharge of an earlier interim order of the court as regards two of the properties being sought to be forfeited to the government. The properties are Clement Illoh’s Mansion located at Ikom Quarters, Issala Azegba, Delta State and the property lying and situates at number 19 Madue Nwafor Street, Off Achala Ibuzor Road, Asaba Delta State.
