Vice President Yemi Osinbajo alleged yesterday that the sums of N100 billion and $295million were fretted away by a few persons in the Goodluck Jonathan administration two weeks to the 2015 general election. But the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) engaged the vice president in a media tirade, challenging him to mention the names of those who participated in the alleged looting or else his statement will be regarded as the usual media trial that has been the trademark of the Buhari administration since 2015. Osinbajo made the allegation at the 7th Presidential Quarterly Business Forum for Private Sector stakeholders at the old banquet hall of the presidential villa, Abuja. Citing the Strategic Alliance Contract with NNPC and NDDC, in which the promoters of the companies made away with close to $3 billion, almost a tenth of the country’s reserves, Osinbajo said grand corruption was the order of the day in the last administration. He noted that there is no way a country will not have a major economic shock with the grand corruption that took place in the last administration. He said, “I’m sure many of us are familiar with the so called Strategic Alliance Contract with the NNPC and NDDC. The promoters of the companies made away with close to $3 billion, almost a tenth of our reserves. There is no way someone will make away with a tenth of your reserves that you will not have a major economic shock. “And if we don’t deal with it, if we don’t talk about it, how will we be able to discuss our economy in a real honest way with a view to ensuring that these things do not happen again? “In one single transaction a few weeks to the 2015 elections, sums of a N100billion and $295million were just fretted away by a few”. The vice president wondered what was wrong with the Nigerian economy, just as he pondered on what should be done to correct the flaws, adding however that there are several issues, many of which had already been articulated. He stated: “But I want to talk about what I think is the biggest problem, which for some reasons we hardly talk about when discussing our national economy. This is grand corruption in the public finance space. “Sometimes the way we talk about the Nigerian economy it does appear as if it is the economy of Norway or somewhere where all things are equal. Even when we refer to what has taken place in our economy we almost sound as if this is in every sense a very normal business environment, a very normal public finance environment but that is not the case. “I do not think that any consideration about our economic development can be properly and honestly done without fully analyzing corruption, especially grand corruption in the public finance space. “You see that despite record high levels of oil prices, very little was invested in infrastructure and a record level of leakages were recorded in the past few years”. Osinbajo lamented that corruption affects everything, including the judgement as to what sort of infrastructure the government should put in place. He continued: “It (corruption) is so fundamental that we can’t even think of our economy without thinking of what to do about it. Sometimes when we talk about our economy we talk about the fact that we have relied on single commodity and that is one of the reasons why we are where we are.

The presidency yesterday tasked the Senate to lift its embargo on non-screening and confirmation of nominees forwarded to it since last year for various positions in agencies not captured by the constitution. This is coming just as the Senate committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions screened two nominees for deputy governorship positions of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as well as others for membership of the apex bank’s Monitoring Policy Committee (MPC). The senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang who craved Senate’s understanding while introducing the six nominees to the committee members requested the Senate to extend its magnanimity on consideration of the nominees to other nominees forwarded to it since last year. He said, “I want to on behalf of the executive thank the Senate for the resolution made last week which paved way for screening exercise of presidential nominees for CBN deputy governorship positions and members of the Monetary Policy Committee. “May I on behalf of the executive plead with the Senate to extend its magnanimity on these nominees to other ones already forwarded to it like executives and board members of various agencies”. But the chairman of the committee, Senator Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim, interjected by saying the gesture given to the CBN nominees was a special one in view of economic implications their non-screening and confirmation is causing the country. According to him, non-confirmation of the nominees by the Senate prevented MPC meeting of the CBN to hold in January and even today (yesterday), 19th March 2018. The reason, he said, led to last week Tuesday’s resolution for screening and confirmation of the nominees for the various CBN positions. The concerned nominees screened yesterday are Mrs Aisha Ahmad from Niger State and  Edward Adamu from Gombe State as CBN deputy governors. Others are Professor Adeola Adenikinju, Dr Aliyu Rafindadi Sanusi, Dr Robert Asogwa and Dr Asheikh Maidugu as members of the apex bank’s Monetary Policy Committee. The Senate had last year in reaction to remarks made by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who said that the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, needed not to be confirmed by the Senate before assuming office in substantive capacity, vowed not to screen nominees forwarded to it by the executive.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, yesterday described corrupt judges as disgrace to the entire judiciary in the country. The CJN who spoke at the 2018 Refreshers Course for Judges and Khadis organised by the National Judicial Institute stated that it is for this reason that the National Judicial Council (NJC) has constituted Corruption and Financial Crimes Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO). He said the committee, which has hit the ground running, would serve as a check on the excesses of some bad eggs in the judiciary. “My Lords, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, you will all agree with me that a corrupt judge is not only a disgrace to the Bench and the noble profession but is also a disaster to the course of justice and the nation. “I must not fail to emphasise that my definition of corruption is not limited to bribe-taking but also includes the giving of judgement or orders based on any consideration other than legal merit. It is gratifying to note that the National Judicial Council is already tackling the cankerworm head-on”. CJN Onnoghen also noted that the setting up of special courts to handle corruption cases is a right step in the right direction, saying it will help in the expeditious hearing of corruption cases. He continued: “The designation of special courts to handle corruption cases is also a step in the right direction as lingering corruption cases will be expeditiously dispensed with. It will no longer be business as usual. “I must state categorically however, lest I am accused of the fallacy of hasty generalisation, that the judiciary in Nigeria is not corrupt or inefficient. It is an established fact that the Judiciary in Nigeria is as good as the best anywhere in the world. Only few judges are found wanting”.
