As preparation for the Easter celebrations gets to its peak, travelers in the country have decried non-availability of vehicles to travel for the festival. LEADERSHIP Weekend gathered that as at yesterday, passengers were stranded at the various motor parks in Abuja and Lagos due to lack of vehicles. Our correspondent who visited the popular Abdullahi Adamu Motor Park, close to Orange Market, in Mararaba, Karu local government area of Nasarawa State, reported that passengers were seen sitting with their luggages as they waited for vehicles. One of the passengers, Mrs Grace Adamu, a civil servant, traveling to Jos for the Easter, said vehicles were not available at the park. She said, “We have been here for close to one hour and no vehicle to board. It is like the patronage is high and almost all the vehicles have left. “I just hope to get a vehicle that will take me to Jos. I prefer the park because it is safe, but if I see that time is against me, I will look for an alternative”. Another traveler, Miss Helen Bako, said she arrived the motor park and was disappointed that the only bus available was going to Gombe and Bauchi. It was a similar situation at the nation’s airports, as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja yesterday, witnessed an upsurge of traffic, with hundreds of passengers travelling to different parts of the country for Easter celebration. The upsurge was said to be more in the domestic wing, even as the international terminal also looked busy. An official of the airport, who pleaded anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the airport was busier on Thursday than Friday. He explained that the Thursday traffic was more on the Lagos route, attributing it to the celebration of Bola Tinubu’s birthday that took place in Lagos. Mr Abdullahi Saroke, Max Air Station Manager, said all flights had been fully booked for the past three days to different parts of the country.

As the Lake Chad in the Northeast and Goronyo Dam in Northwest geopolitical zones  of the federation decrease by the day, there are dangers of impending famine, unless urgent steps are taken to save the situation, LEADERSHIP Weekend checks have revealed. It was gathered that both the Lake Chad and the Goronyo Dam might have devastating impact on Nigeria because of the way the waters were drying up in recent times. Indigenes have warned that if no urgent step is taken, the sudden depletion of Goronyo dam would not only affect onion, garlic, tomatoes, water melon and sugar cane production in Sokoto state, but will also heighten chances of hunger in both Sokoto and Kebbi states. On the Lake Chad, it was gathered that states like Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba and Bauchi might be affected negatively by the time the water dries up. Speaking to LEADERSHIP Weekend on what would be their fate this year, some of the indigenes said they were devastated beyond words. One of them, Alhaji Umaru Katsira, said he was still wondering how to feed his family of 23 this year, as all hope of a bomber harvest from the dry season farming had been truncated by the sudden decrease of the Goronyo dam. He said, “For most of us within this Goronyo dam, it has been a source of blessing since it was constructed because we effectively use water from the dam in our irrigation farming, thereby keeping us agriculturally productive all through the year. “And like human endeavours differ, others engage in all year round fishing as source of survival, courtesy of the Goronyo dam.” According to him, if nothing is done urgently by both the federal and state governments on the dwindling Goronyo dam, hunger will hit both Sokoto and Kebbi states this year. When our correspondent visited some of the villages in Kebbi State that make use of the water from the Goronyo dam for their irrigation farming, the natives admitted that there is an impending hunger. Sokoto and Kebbi states are among the largest producers of onions, garlic, watermelon and tomatoes. Aside the imminent hunger, the Goronyo dam depletion is equally posing a great threat of water scarcity to over four million people within Sokoto and Kebbi. Confirming this, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, said the two states must work together to tackle the problem of water shortage at the dam

The federal government has released a list of some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who allegedly looted the nation’streasury while the party was in power. In response to allegations by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo of monumental corruption under the Jonathan administration, the PDP had challenged the governing All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to name the looters. Rising up to the challenge, the minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammad, yesterday unveiled the list of alleged looters under PDP government during a press conference in Lagos. In the few days, the APC and the PDP had been entangled in a media war, trading accusations and counter accusations against each other, with each party accusing the other of looting public funds. The media tirade continued yesterday when the Information minister insisted that Nigeria was looted blind under PDP’s watch, and that the starting point in tendering an apology is for them to return the loot. The list of looters includes the current PDP national chairman, Uche Secondus and former PDP national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh. Mohammed said the release of the list was a response to PDP’s public challenge for the government to unveil the names of looters it claimed looted the country dry for three years. In the list, which contains six names, Secondus is accused of taking N200 million from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) on February 19, 2015. Metuh is listed as being on trial for allegedly collecting N1.4 billion from the ONSA, while Chief Raymond Dokpesi is listed as being on trial for allegedly taking N2.1 billion from ONSA. Others on the list are Dudafa Waripamo-Owei, a former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is listed as being on trial forallegedly keeping over N830 million in accounts of four different companies, and the former president’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, who is facing trial following a Federal High Court ruling that he has a case to answer for allegedly collecting $40 million from the ONSA. The last person on the list is a former PDP financial secretary who is alleged of taking N600 million from the ONSA on October 24, 2018. Mohammed said the fact that most of them are in court and trying to cut a deal with the government is a clear indication that the PDP damaged Nigeria with corruption and cannot be trusted to return to power. He stated: “The PDP has challenged us to name the looters under their watch. They said they did not loot the treasury. Well, I am sure theyknow that the treasury was looted dry under their watch. Yet they decided to grandstand. This shows the hollowness of their apology. “They are in court and the records are available. Some of the people on this list are seeking to plea bargain, and that is a fact. We insist that Nigeria was looted blind under the watch of the PDP and that the starting point in tendering an apology is for them to return the loot.”

The President, Gbagyi Women Market Association, Gosa, Mrs Ladi Danladi, has blamed the FCT Administration over the destruction of their properties worth millions of naira during the demolition of the Gosa Market on Saturday, March 24, 2018. The woman leader, who arrived the site of the demolished market in company of some women traders, when the management of the Human Rights Commission led by its executive secretary, Mrs Oti Ovrawah visited the scene of the event, said that she was beaten by the security task force with four of her children presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. “I have recently collected loan from the bank worth hundreds of thousands to invest into my business which has been our source of livelihood, but these people came unannounced, last Saturday and started demolishing and vandalising our properties. They did not have any human face in their actions. When we wanted to resist their actions, they resorted into violence, beating me up in the presence of my children and injuring us all in the process.” The FCT Minister and the FCDA are not fair to us, this is our ancestral land, they are coming to dispossess us of it without adequate information nor compensation. We know they want to give this land to some people. We therefore demand the compensation of the valuables they destroyed and the recovery of our land”, she said. Earlier, in his response, the representative of the Executive Secretary of the FCDA and Director, Engineering Services, FCDA, Engineer Shehu Hadi, who was also around with the native authorities of market, at the relocated site of the market, debunked claims of irregularities in their actions. He claimed that the decision was made in order to provide adequate security to the traders as well as commuters who ply the airport road.
