The debate on Nigeria’s future continued yesterday, with the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) declaring that this country cannot survive without the North.

ACF is the North’s apex socio-cultural group. It is seen as its voice.

ACF Chairman Ibrahim Coomassie stated this when the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Forum received leaders of the foremost northern women socio-cultural organisation, Jam’iyya Matan Arewa (JMA), in Kaduna.

The one-time Inspector General of Police said: “We all know that without the North, Nigeria can never survive. We still stand by it. But now is the time to walk the talk in the interest of our people.

“Chibok girls are still missing. Now it has gone to Dapchi in Yobe State. What happened? Are we always going to be the victims? Boko Haram; see what they did to the Northeast. They have spread over to the Northcentral and even to the southern part of the country.

“Should we continue to be regarded in the negative side? No. We are leaders in our own right and we must exercise this responsibility for our people”.

“Whenever there is crisis, women and children are always the major victims. Enough is enough. Enough of killings of our women and children, enough of kidnapping of our daughters and enough of destruction of our property. We are proud that you have come forward to meet us to discuss this issue.”

Coomassie urged President Muhammadu Buhari to end the killings and kidnappings.

JMA Chairperson Aishatu Pamela Sadauki, who was represented by Hajiya Aliko Muhammed, said their visit was to discuss how to protect children and women from incessant attacks.

She said, as mothers, they had been alarmed by continued abduction of children and unwarranted killings, particularly in the region. She stressed the need to address it now, saying it was imperative.

Also yesterday, some prominent Yoruba leaders under the umbrella of  Afenifere gathered in Ibadan to restate their stand on restructuring and true federalism  to preserve Nigeria’s unity.

To the socio-cultural group, led by its National Chairman Chief Reuben Fasoranti, the only solution to the country’s challenges is restructuring.

Eminent speakers at the Afenifere Oyo State Summit include Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa , Mrs Bukola Oni, Dr. Adebisi Busari, Dr. Gbola Adetunji , Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, and  Chief Sehinde Arogbofa.

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Gbade Ojo.

States have shared N1.9trillion Paris Club Refund and Budget Support Facilities to enable them meet their obligations to workers, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday.

According to him, at the inception of the Buhari administration in 2015, 26 of the 36 states were not up to date in their wage obligation to workers.

“ The Budget Support Facility to states has gone a long way in cushioning the shock experienced by the federating units which resulted from the sharp drop in prices of crude oil in 2016.

“So our support to states has remained unprecedented in the history of administration in Nigeria,” he said.

Osinbajo spoke in Abeokuta at the fourth edition of the Ogun Investors’ Forum, which ends today.

The theme of the programme, which is  ”Consolidating Gains and Accelerating Growth.’’

Osinbajo said that the Muhammadu Buhari -led administration had continued to extend equal and unbiased support to states, regardless of   party affiliations.

“ We have been sensitive, attentive and responsive to their needs while our programmes and policies have been developed with the states in mind.

“ The Anchor Borrowers Programme has continued to provide cheap credit to small holders farmers across the nation.

“The President’s Fertiliser Initiative has ensured that farmers across Nigeria have direct access to fertiliser.

“We have continued to feed about seven million primary school pupils in 21 states of the country,” Osinbajo said.

He explained  that the administration had been able to reverse the trend of   corruption that existed in the country when it assumed power in 2015.

Legal fireworks will begin on Monday in the suit challenging the legitimacy of the National Assembly’s decision to amend the Electoral Act.

In contention, particularly, is the reordering of the 2019 general elections sequence as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja set the date yesterday during the resumed hearing of the suit filed by Accord Party.

He directed parties in the suit – the National Assembly, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) – to within 48 hours respond to the plaintiff’s adress. He gave the plaintiff till Friday to file further replies to the defendants should there be the need.

During the hearing, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami and Mr Femi Falana (SAN) frowned at the attempt by the Senate to undermine the Judiciary following last Wednesday’s order by Justice Mohammed restraining the Legislature from acting on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018.

The Senate last week took exception to Justice Mohammed’s injunction, saying his action was an obstruction to its constitutional assignment.

It resolved to report Justice Mohammed to Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnogen through an official correspondence.

Malami amd Falana described the development as “sad” and urged Justice Mohammed to ignore whatever threat anyone might have made.

Malami said: “I must say that the resort to intimidation and threat by one arm of government to the other, particularly the Senate, with regards to the powers of your lordship to discharge your duty, is indeed a sad development.

The Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday heard that the Oyo State Government sent a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after it uncovered an alleged fraud in the sale of the state’s shares in seven banks by the Rashidi Ladoja administration.

Testifying in Ladoja’s trial for alleged money laundering, the Executive Secretary, Oyo State Bureau of Investment and Public, Private Partnership, Mr Yinka Fatoki, said state officials allegedly got “gifts” running into millions of naira from the portfolio manager.

The witness recalled that in 2007, while he was an Acting Director of Investment Promotion in the Ministry of Commerce, and while serving as the Desk Officer for Oyo’s holdings in public quoted equities, the state executive council reached a decision to sell off the state’s shares.

“In 2007, there was a decision by the state to sell some of the shareholdings in about seven banks, including First City Monument Bank, UBA, Skye Bank, Stanbic IBTC, Standard Chattered Bank and Guarantee Trust Bank. Fountain Securities Ltd was appointed the Portfolio Manager,” he said.

He said the Ministry of Commerce was mandated to generate the letters of instruction to liquidate the shares, which was carried out.

He said after the sale of the shares, Fountain Securities remitted the funds in three installments to the state.

Fatoki said the shares were sold at a discount, with the proceeds amounting to N4.3billion, adding that not all the shares were sold.

The witness said the Christopher Alao-Akala administration ordered an investigation on the transaction, and a stockbroker, GTI Securities, was appointed to review Fountain Securities’ report on the transactions.
