Unknown to many, the failed attempt to foist a Caretaker Committee on the All Progressives Congress (APC) was actually aimed at creating legal crisis for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and edge him out of the presidential election.

Those behind the plot were said to have set a booby trap on account of which Buhari’s nomination for re-election would be declared invalid in line with 1999 Constitution and the constitution of the party.

It was learnt yesterday that 10 more governors had shelved support for the extension of the tenure of the National Chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and members of his National Working Committee (NWC), based on Buhari’s opposition to the elongation of their tenure.

There were strong indications yesterday that a former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, was on top of the pecking order in the search for the national chairman of APC.

But three APC governors and some members of the National Assembly who have constituted themselves into opposition elements within the party are said to be weighing the option of defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any coalition party.

Investigation conducted by our correspondent revealed that three traps were set for Buhari by those who were opposed to his second term ambition in APC.

The three hurdles are:

Foist a caretaker committee on APC to make Buhari’s nomination invalid and subject him to legal crisis
Conspire and defeat Buhari at the APC presidential primaries
Create division in APC to prompt the defection of some governors, party leaders and National Assembly members to either PDP or any of the coalition parties.
It was gathered that the plot was long hatched by some leading figures in APC in cahoots with some forces and a few leaders of some opposition parties.

Findings confirmed that at the caucus meeting of the APC in Abuja on Monday, the anti-Buhari elements in APC were happy that their script was playing according to plan.

The outcome of the caucus meeting was said to have buoyed the confidence of Oyegun, NWC members and some leaders of the party.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) launched into a fresh stand-off yesterday after Information and Culture Minister  Lai Mohammed named the PDP national chairman and four other members of the party as looters.

Mohammed was reacting to Thursday’s statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr.Kola Ologbondiyan, challenging the federal government to name those who stole public funds under the last dispensation.

Other ‘looters’ named by the Minister yesterday were the immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr.Olisa Metuh; Dr. Raymond Dokpesi; former Presidential Senior Special Assistant, Dudafa Waripamo-Owei and Robert Azibaola, a cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

But the PDP hit back immediately, dismissing government’s allegation as hollow and laughable.

Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesman, asked the minister to name any of the party members that has been convicted of looting the treasury.

Mohammed alleged that Secondus collected N200 million from the office of the former National Security Adviser (NSA) while Metuh took N1.4 billion and Dr. Raymond Dokpesi collected N2.1 billion.

Describing the PDP chieftains as hypocrites, the minister said that the Federal Government will continue to make references to the alleged looting, adding that the looters and their party were unpatriotic.

Mohammed said: “The PDP has challenged us to name the looters under their watch. They said they did not loot the treasury.

“I am sure they know that the treasury was looted dry under their watch, yet they decided to grandstand.

“This shows the hollowness of their apology to Nigerians.

A  chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last night sparked a fresh controversy in the polity.

The former Deputy Senate President confessed on television that he helped his party win elections in the past.

“I don’t have to go and change election (results) but when you provide money, you give money to INEC boys that if they see any chance they should favour you, you provide money to the security (personnel),” he said on Channels Television’ Hard Copy.

“I tell you it’s not necessarily when I am contesting election but when my party sponsors a candidate, I will like that candidate to win election.”

Mantu who represented Plateau State in the Senate between 1999 and 2007 pronounced himself a born again politician in 2017.

He was elected on the platform of the PDP.

He agreed ‘wholeheartedly’ with PDP national chairman,Prince Uche Secundus,on the recent  public apology he   tendered on the party’s mistakes when it was in power between 1999  and 2015.

He said:”We have failed the people through the ways and politics. It is time for us to ensure that we do not allow the wrong people to lead the people and the nation.

“ As politicians, we have committed sins against the people, by encouraging the things that we should not have encouraged.

“God has totally blessed our country Nigeria with abundant human and natural resources but we have failed to utilize these to improve the quality of lives of the people.”

Asked why he thought  Secundus’ apology was in order, Mantu said: “there is the need for Nigerian politicians to apologize for all the sins we have committed against the people.

As the tax amnesty under the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) ends on Saturday, some private sector players are said to be lobbying President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the amnesty period.

An official at the Presidency, who craved for anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that governors and company owners had called the President and Vice President to push for the extension of the programme.

“We are expecting Mr President to make an announcement on the tax amnesty deadline by this weekend.

“To be frank and honest, nobody knows whether the President will decide to extend it or not, but there has been calls by state governors and key private sector players calling for the extension.

“However, it still remains unclear if the President will take the recommendation to extend it by another three months, since he had been advised otherwise by the Minister of Finance and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) chairman,’’ the source said.

Meanwhile, the Adamawa state Commissioner for Finance, Mr Mahmoud Yunusa, told NAN that many of the states were in support of extending the tax amnesty past the March 31 deadline.

“It should be extended because people are just beginning to buy into the programme. We see people coming up willingly to declare their assets and it shouldn’t end soon.

“Nigerians deserve more time and I believe that some of them are still collating their assets to know their worth before doing so.

“Also, some haven’t declared because they operate businesses without any formal documentation, so it will take time before they get their books in order.

“So it’s my opinion that extending it for another six months would ensure better success,’’ he said.
