Some Senators are planning to resist the National Assembly’s plot to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on amendments to the Electoral Act, The Nation has learnt.

Their major concern is to ensure that the President’s veto survives, especially the rejection of the new Order of Elections for 2019.

No fewer than 46 of the 108 senators have signed a register to stop moves by the Senate to pass the amendments to the Electoral Act without Buhari’s assent.

Besides, some supporters of the President are lobbying members of the House of Representatives to oppose the plot to override his veto.

The lobbyists are targeting about 260 members to sustain the veto.

Twenty All Progressives Congress (APC) governors have joined the battle to prevail on Senators and Representatives to retain the present Order of Elections.

Each of the governors is  lobbying members of the National Assembly in his state to have a rethink on the controversial amendments.

The President, last week, rejected three amendments to the Electoral Act.

Of the three issues, the most contentious one is the new Section 25(1), which states that elections shall be held in the following order: (a) National Assembly; (b) State Houses of Assembly and Governorship and (c) Presidential election.

In spite of alleged misgivings by the House of Representatives, the Chairman of the National Assembly, Dr. Bukola Saraki (who is also the President of the Senate), said he was on the same page with Speaker Yakubu Dogara and other leaders of the legislative arm on an “appropriate” response to the President’s veto.

To many an observer, this is tantanmount to drawing the battle line.

Although there have been behind-the-scene manoeuvres to end the row between the Executive and the Legislature on the Electoral Act, the two arms are said to be plotting to outwit each other.

But while the leaders of the National Assembly are on the same page, there appears to be cracks among senators and members of the House of Representatives.

The case of the Senate was more pronounced yesterday, following the emergence of some pro-Buhari senators, who  have launched a move to avert the overriding of the President’s veto.

It was gathered that the senators formed a Parliamentary Support Group (PSG) to “push through their minority strength” in the Senate.

In the group are 46 senators, who have subscribed to the new group and signed to reject plans to override the President’s veto on amendments to the Electoral Act.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo spoke yesterday on the troubled  economy and the Buhari administration’s battle to revive it.

In his view, corruption has been the major problem.

He painted a gloomy picture of the mismanagement of the economy under the Dr. Jonathan administration.

According to him, the country lost $3 billion to the Strategic Alliance contracts the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and some companies signed.

“The promoters of the companies made away with close to $3 billion, almost a tenth of our reserves.

“There is no way if someone made away with a tenth of your reserves that  you will not  have a major economic shock. And if we don’t deal with it, if we don’t talk about it, how will we be able to discuss our economy in a real honest way with a view to ensuring that these things do not happen again?”

He continued: “In one single transaction a few weeks to the elections in 2015, sums of N100 billion and $295 million were just frittered away by a few,” he told a gathering of businessmen, government officials and journalists in Abuja.

It was at the Seventh Presidential Quarterly Business Forum for Private Sector stakeholders at the Presidential Villa.

Osinbajo noted that when oil prices went up, Nigeria did not save for the rainy day, adding that the problem was not just that of a single commodity.

Osinbajo said: “Sometimes when we talk about our economy, we talk about the fact that we have relied on single commodity and that is one of the reasons why we are where we are. Yes, that’s quite true, but the fact is that proceeds from that single commodity were regularly hijacked consistently by a few. That is really the problem. If we had spent the proceeds from that single commodity the way we ought to,  we won’t be where we are today.

An American private equity firm, Milost Global Inc, is seeking to inject $1 billion to recapitalise Unity Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s 24.

According to a report, the U.S. firm plans an initial stake of about 30 per cent in Unity Bank in exchange for its first equity investment of $250 million.

Relying on two sources believed to be aware of talks on the transactions, Bloomberg reports that Milost plans to invest $700 million in equity and $300 million in five-year bonds that can be converted into shares in the Nigerian lender.

However, the transaction is still subject to a due diligence as well as regulatory approvals, but the first part of the deal may be completed by next quarter.

The rest of the cash will be drawn down in intervals over a period of four years, provided Unity Bank has sufficient shares to issue to Milost, one of the sources said.

Some small- and mid-sized Nigerian lenders are battling to rebuild capital levels after a slump in oil prices triggered a foreign-currency shortage and a contraction in the country’s economy in 2016 made it difficult for businesses to repay loans.

Unity Bank, which was formed out of the merger of nine banks between December 2005 and March 2006, said last April that it was in talks to sell its non-performing loans to avoid penalties after missing a deadline set by regulators on its recapitalisation plans.

An investment in Unity Bank will be Milost’s third in a publicly traded Nigerian company since it agreed to pump $350 million into oil-services company Japaul Oil & Maritime Services Plc in February and to provide a $250 million financing facility to Resort Savings & Loans Plc.

Several calls to the numbers listed on Milost’s website have gone unanswered, Bloomberg said.

The private-equity firm is targeting companies that trade at less than half of their intrinsic value using a facility combining debt and equity that it calls the Milost Equity Subscription Agreement, it said in an emailed statement yesterday.

The Police have charged Senator Dino Melaye and three others with criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms before a Federal High Court in Lokoja.

Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood, an assistant commissioner of police, told reporters in Lokoja yesterday that the case was filed on March 16, following the confession of a “wanted criminal”  that the senator gave him arms and cash.

Moshood said the senator failed to cooperate with the police investigators having failed to report for questioning even after the Police wrote to Senate President Bukola Saraki seeking the release of the senator to answer to the allegations.

Melaye who is battling to retain his senate seat, last week lost his bid to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding with his recall at the Court of Appeal

The suspects, Kabiru Saidu, a.k.a Osama (31), Nuhu Salisu (25 ) aka small, and Alhaji Muhammed Audu, a politician, who is now at large, are charged along with Melaye, who is representing Kogi West.

The Police said Kabiru and Salisu were arrested on January 19 at Ogojueje in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, after a shootout and they confessed to being hired by Melaye to cause mayhem in the state.

The police said they seized from the thugs and their gang members, two AK47 rifles, five pump action guns, two locally made pistols and heaps of charms.

According to the police, the men not only confessed to have been involved in several kidnappings in the state and environs, they also claimed to be hired thugs for politicians.

“According to the gang leader, Osama, he had been working as a political thug for Alhaji Mohammed Audu .

“ He said Alhaji Mohammed Audu invited him to Abuja and introduced him to Senator Dino Melaye and they met on Airport road, Abuja inside Senator Melaye’s car in the month of December, 2017.
