All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday advised Nigerians not to accept the apologies tendered by the People s Democratic Party (PDP) for its mistakes while in power.

Speaking at his 66th birthday’s colloquium in Lagos, the former lagos State governor described the apology tendered last week byPDP National Chairman Uche Secondus as “deceitful”, meant to hoodwink Nigerians to get a political advantage.

He said the apology cannot change the effect of the damage already done to the economy.

”Nigerians should not accept PDP’s apologies, they are corrupt, they lied, they falsified, they changed figures.

“For 16 years, they made fake promises, gave us fake figures, and they tell us, ‘Don’t talk about it’.

“It is like, after catching a thief and he tells you, ‘Don’t look at me, go and steal your own’. We are soldering on. We have a good leader to rely on. We have hope.”

At the colloquium, which is the 10th edition, were President Miuhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, host Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and many other governors, lawmakers, ministers, past governors, past ministers, traditional rulers, top industrialists and other categories of people and associates of the celebrator.

The former governor also chided (although without making direct reference to him) former President Olusegun Obasanjo for writing a letter advising President Muhammadu Buhari not to contest in 2019, besides castigating his administration.

Tinubu said it was was full of bile.

He added: “My grandmother used to send me to a letter writer. Someone is writing letters these days, a letter of politics as if they have never been there before. Bad belle letters.

“The ship of state was about to wreck, but President Buhari steered the ship back. The voyage is the voyage of hope. We are reinventing and re-directing Nigeria. It is not an easy voyage to embark on.”

An excited Tinubu was full of praises for the President, the vice president, governors, legislators and other dignitaries who came to honour him. He also thanked his wife, Oluremi, “for tolerating hme”, adding that she had no choice.

He applauded Ambode for his exceptional commitment to the progress and economic development of Lagos State.

Let me first say that we started this colloquium now about 10 years ago, and I’m sure that most of us have heard the story. Many of those who started the idea of the colloquium probably are here with us today.  Most of us had worked with the then Governor of Lagos State, Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for several years, some for four years, some for eight years. And we decided that every year, on the occasion of his birthday, we would take time to discuss matters of national importance. Part of the reason why we did so was because Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was an unusual governor in Lagos State.

Let me say why it was unusual. The reason why it was unusual was because it was a government where there was a great deal of argument and he, as the leader of that government, allowed so much argument and so many different shades of ideas.

I recall a particular occasion, when we started talking about the land use charge. I know that there are issues around the land use charge today. But when the old concept developed around the land use charge, there were so many arguments. One group felt that we shouldn’t even introduce the charge, another group felt that we should do so. I remember that in Ikeja, where this argument was taking place, we were in a small room; Lai Mohammed was there, Wale Edun, Yemi Cardoso, I think Dele Alake, and a few others. We were all there arguing on both sides. At some point, when Asiwaju was losing the argument, he said, “Ah, were you the people who were voted for?” Then he stormed out of the room and left. Then, we all waited. Nobody left. He came back a few minutes later and said, “ah, are you people still here? Then he continued the argument. Now he came back with more facts and figures. So we suspected that when he stormed out of the room, he actually went to bring some more facts.

In the end, we instituted the charge and so many other different ways by which the foundation for what we see in Lagos State today were developed. And I want to just commend Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu again, for ensuring that, not only did he develop a whole generation of persons who have become, in various respects leaders, but also that he allowed that group of people to develop ideas to contradict him many times, to controvert his own ideas many times, and many times, he gave in to those ideas, and we’ve seen the results of it.

My role here is to tie the knots and link the philosophy to governance and commitment of our social investment programme.

Gunmen believed to be cattle thieves killed 15 herders in attacks on a Zanfara State village yesterday, the police said.

“Armed bandits attacked Bawon-Daji village and killed 15 people,” Zamfara State police spokesman Muhammad Shehu was quoted as saying by French News Agency, AFP.

His account was corroborated by Gado Anka, a local government official.

Anka told AFP thet motorcycle-riding gunmen stormed the remote village in Anka district around 13:00  (1200GMT), shooting dead 12 residents before fleeing to a hideout in the bush.

“They returned two hours later and attacked mourners during the funeral of the victims in the cemetery, killing three more and injuring several others,” he said.

Rural communuties in the agrarian state are under siege from gangs who kill, loot and torching

This has prompted villages to form vigilante groups – which in turn are often accused of extra-judicial killings of suspected cattle thieves, prompting deadly reprisals by the gangs.

It was not clear if the latest killings were as a result of reprisals.

In February, dozens of people were killed when gunmen opened fire on traders and villagers at Birane, in the Zurmi area of the state.

In Southern Kaduna state, six persons were feared killed in separate attacks in Bakin Kogi, Kaninkon chiefdom, Jama’a local government area.

The killings occurred the day after Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai had a peace meeting with Fulani leaders.

The two attacks were reported to have occurred at between 10am and 11am yesterday and carried out by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.

A member of the security committee in the community, Auta Maurice, who confirmed the attacks in a telephone interview said, the gunmen, numbering about 10, were wearing military and mobile police uniforms.

Maurice said three people were killed in the bush when they went to cut wood for the roofing of their houses while three others were killed at a local mining site on the hills.

He said four people were injured and were taken to the hospital in Kafanchan.

FORMER President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, has been ordered to defend himself in a fraud allegation of $40 million levelled against him and his company, One Plus Holding Ltd, by the Federal Government.

According to a Federal High Court, Abuja, Azibaola must defend himself on two out of the nine-count charge preferred against him by the government.

He was to defend himself on the two counts bordering on being in possession of and converting the sum of $40 million received from the office of the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) to personal use.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba made the order yesterday while ruling on the no-case-submission filed by Azibaola and his wife, Stella.

The court, however, discharged and acquitted Stella of all the nine-count charge levelled against her.

Dimgba, in discharging Stella, held that being wife to Azibaola was not enough to charge her with the offence since criminal liability was personal and not vicarious.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the prosecuting agency in the matter, in 2016 preferred a seven-count charge against Azibaola, his wife, Stella and their company.

EFCC said they received $40 million worth of contract from Dasuki.

They were subsequently arraigned on June 7, 2016 and were admitted to bail for N500 million each.

They were re-arraigned on April 27, 2017, this time on a nine-count amended charge.

The Federal Government has warned the media to thread softlyin reporting security.

In spite of the right to freedom of expression, the Presidency urged the media to strike a balance between openness and national security.

Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu in a statement yesterday said:  “In the midst of the debate over the right to freedom of expression and the government’s efforts to ensure that the digital space and the mass media generally do not become a playground for terrorism and destabilization, security agencies in the country have given assurances that they would maintain a balance between openness and national security.

“They have, however, called on the nation’s media owners and practitioners to walk the fine balance between openness on one hand and national security on the other.

According to him, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lawal Daura, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufa’i Abubakar and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, at an interactive meeting with owners and decision makers in the media at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Tuesday, also  gave assurances that the security situation in the country was within the control of the government.

The media, he said, can helped the government by reducing sensation from their daily coverage.

In their own assessment, “our state of national security is not as bad as it is painted by the media.”

In seeking the support from the media towards the achievement of security for everyone, the heads of the agencies emphasized that sharing and coordination among security agencies and the media is essential to counter the ever-changing threats faced by the nation.

The Security chieftains, he said, expressed the particular worry that there are groups in the country with evil designs to disrupt the processes leading to the 2019 general elections in the hope of creating a stalemate.
