NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE PUNCH NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [18 MARCH, 2018].

Below are the headlines found on The Punch Online Newspaper for today, Sunday, 18 March, 2018.

Sun, 18 Mar 2018
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo; the immediate past Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and some political parties have been meeting as part of moves to strategise for the 2019 elections, The PUNCH has learnt.

In one of such meetings, which held at Protea Hotel, located at 42/44 Isaac John Street, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, Obasanjo was said to have met with 35 political parties under the aegis of the Coalition for New Nigeria.

Others at the meeting included the Co-Chairmen of the Nigerian Intervention Movement, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), and Dr. Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, one of the children of Nigeria’s post-independence first Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa.

A former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke; a former Governor Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; and a former Special Adviser to Obasanjo, who is the spokesman for the CNM, Mr. Akin Osuntokun, also attended the strategic meeting.

Some of the political parties represented at the meeting included the Social Democratic Party, Labour Party, Alliance for Democracy, Democratic People’s Congress, Action Alliance, Progressives People’s Alliance, Democratic Alternative and National Conscience Party.

Others, who attended the Lagos meeting, were Mr. Kenneth Udete, who represented Action Alliance Party; and Mr. Okey Chukwuendu, who represented the All Grand Alliance Party.

A source, who attended the meeting, told our correspondent that Obasanjo emphasised the need to work together ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The source, who is close to Obasanjo, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the coming together of the various interest groups and individuals had become necessary as that was seen as the only way to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2019 elections.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said, “The meeting was summoned by Obasanjo. He noted that both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party have failed Nigeria and there is a need to come together. He said his association, Coalition for Nigeria Movement, and the NIM should form a merger.”

When asked why Kwankwaso was invited to the meeting despite being a member of the ruling APC, the source noted that Kwankwaso had always been an Obasanjo loyalist.

“Have you forgotten that Kwankwaso was appointed the Minister of Defence by President Obasanjo in 2003? The former governor was not invited because of his ties with the APC but because he also has a huge movement known as the Kwankwasiya in Kano and its environs. Kano is a very strategic state,” the source, a top member of one of the groups, stated.

The power tussle between Senators, loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari, and those who are pushing for the reordering of elections heightened on Saturday with the President’s supporters promising to publish signatures of their members.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that at a meeting in Abuja last week, the pro-Buhari lawmakers decided to ensure that an open ballot voting system be used if the National Assembly eventually opts to override Buhari’s refusal to assent the amendments to the Electoral Act 2010.

The PUNCH had, on Thursday, exclusively reported that the pro-Buhari senators had collated more than 40 signatures of those who would vote against the reported move of the federal lawmakers to override the President’s refusal to assent the bill.

Buhari had withheld his assent to the bill, which principally reordered the sequence of elections ahead of the 2019 polls.

The President had written to both chambers of the National Assembly on his decision to withhold assent to the amendment bill. In the letter, dated March 8, 2018, Buhari had said the amendments made by the lawmakers were in conflict with the existing laws.

The Senate has, however, been advised by its legal department to ignore the reasons given by President and proceed with the process to veto the bill.

A new Section 25 of the Electoral Act states that the sequence of the elections will commence with National Assembly, to be followed by governorship and state Houses of Assembly, while presidential poll will come last.

It was gathered that the pro-Buhari senators had concluded plans to publish the signatures of those against the amendments.

The publication, which might be sponsored in the media, would be aimed at ejecting suspected moles allegedly planted in the pro-Buhari camp by some senators allegedly pushing for the amendments to sail through.

A source in the anti-amendment group told one of our correspondents on Saturday that since the legal department had asked the Senate to ignore the constitutional issues raised by Buhari on the bill, the President’s loyalists were also planning to protect his interest.

Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, on Saturday, vowed to fight crime, saying there would be no hiding place for criminals in the state.

Obiano said this in Awka, the Anambra State capital, when he and his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, were sworn in for a second term in office.

The governor was re-elected on November 18, 2017, on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance. He scored a total vote of 234,071, defeating Dr. Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 98,752.

Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Peter Umeadi, administered the oath of office to them around 12.30pm on Saturday.

Obiano said, “I’m determined to make Anambra State the safest state in the country and the best investment destination.”

The governor said he would set up state-of-the-art hospitals in the three senatorial districts of the state while assuring the people that major roads in Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka would be fixed.

He promised to encourage small and medium enterprises in the state to boost economic powers of the people, while promising to complete the state airport at Umeri, in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.

The archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, said the opening prayers on the occasion.

The Chairman of the Obiano swearing-in committee, Mr. Ifeany Ibezi, in his remarks, described Obiano as a “legacy governor”.

He enjoined the people of the state to continue to give the governor their support and cooperation.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, at the ceremony.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday led top government officials and captains of industry, among others, to attend the wedding of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s daughter, Damilola.

The wedding of Damilola and her husband, Oluseun, was held earlier in the day at the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja. The guests thereafter moved to the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the reception took place.

Buhari was accompanied to the reception by his wife, Aisha.

State governors, ministers, presidential aides and other top government officials were present at the reception.

Just like the traditional engagement that took place on Thursday, journalists were not allowed to cover any of the two events held on Saturday.

The Vice-President’s media team had earlier in a statement advised that journalists would not be allowed to “record or film the event.”

The office promised to “share information and images — still and video — of the events later in the day.”

“Cameras are however welcome to record the arrival and departure formalities at the church,” the statement added.

In some of the photographs later released by the President’s media office, Buhari and his wife were seen exchanging pleasantries with the new couple and posing for group photographs with the couple and their parents.

The President was also captured shaking hands with some state governors that included those of Akwa Ibom, Borno, Imo, Nasarawa, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ondo states, among others. The President’s wife supervised the cutting of the wedding cake at the reception.
