Was the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP being mischievous last Thursday when it advised Asiwaju Bola Tinubu not to be deceived by proclamations of comradeship by President Muhammadu Buhari?

Buhari had more than shown his expression of love for Tinubu, at least in the last few months. Last Thursday the president moved the whole apparatus of government to Lagos with his presence and that of his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo at the 10th Bola Tinubu Colloquium. Buhari also hailed Tinubu who he described as his friend and political partner as a political strategist at the colloquium that marked the 66th birthday of the former Lagos State governor. Two days earlier, the president sacrificed some of his political capital when he compelled the National Executive Committee, NEC of his party, All Progressives Congress, APC to revisit the extension of the tenure of the party executives of the party across all levels. The president’s new stance was to the pleasure of Asiwaju Tinubu who had been insistent on the exit of the John Odigie-Oyegun led national executive of the party. So, given the president’s inclinations towards Tinubu, the advise from the PDP could as well be surprising. Does the president mean any harm to Tinubu? After Tinubu helped to weave the alliance that emerged as the APC in 2013 and subsequently helped the party to win the 2015 presidential election, there were insinuations everywhere that Asiwaju was abandoned by the president in the positioning of people and policies in the government. That claim was echoed largely because the president went beyond Tinubu to pick all the ministers from the Southwest. Even more irritating for the Tinubu Camp was the claim that those on the wrong side of progressive politics in the Southwest politics were picked. The wound perhaps reached an irritating level about two years ago when the president at the last minute cancelled a state visit to Lagos at the last minute on the claim that he was unwell. Critics were not amused when the same day that the president was reported to be unwell he was seen cavorting with Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State in his office in Abuja. So, it was not difficult for friend and foe to insinuate a cold war in the first two years of the Buhari administration especially as Tinubu spent a large part of his time outside the country. The implication was that Tinubu had bought a bad market in his support for Buhari to be president. However, perspectives started changing last November when the president tapped Tinubu to accompany him to the African Union–European Union summit in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. It was while in Ivory Coast that the president set the political landscape on edge during a meeting with the Nigerian community when he gave an inkling on his possible quest for re-election. The president said he came along with the governors of Akwa Ibom and Bauchi States, Udom Emmanuel, and Mohammed Abubakar because he might be needing their votes in future.

While some Nigerians have expressed worry and fear citing the implications of   General Theophilus Danjuma’s call for Nigerians to defend themselves against killers, some leaders in Benue State identify with those who argue that the call was timely to stop such killings.

This, perhaps accounts for the decision of the tribal leaders of the three major ethnic groups in Benue state including the Mdzough U Tiv, the ldoma National Forum and Omi Ny’lgede to align themselves with the position of Gen. Danjuma.
Speaking through its chairman, Chief Edward Ujege, the tribal leaders maintained that they considered the call by the former Nigerian Army Chief and Minister of Defence as a patriotic statement that “came from a person who ought to know and who is telling the truth.” They maintained that the elder statesman hardly spoke but for such critical issues that effected the corporate existence and life of country. According to them, “Gen. Danjuma’s statement captured what is happenings in Benue State. “From the year   2010 to 2016, Benue State experienced excessive bloodshed from Fulani herdsmen attacks. Over 2,000 people were murdered and properties worth N95billion were destroyed in 2014 alone.” They explained that the unending bloodletting and wanton destruction of property by rampaging herdsmen compelled the people of the state to unanimously come up with a grazing law to ensure the protection of all and the peaceful coexistence among farmers and herders in the state. “Instead of the Federal Government and the herdsmen militia accepting and implementing the law, the herdsmen went on rampage killing 73 people on the 1st and 2nd days of January, 2018. “Before the senseless murder of these innocent Benue citizens the Army and security agents were fully informed and they took no action to prevent the act. “Benue State Government and her people called on the Federal Government, the Army and other security agencies for protection. The Army decided to institute Exercise Ayem A’ Kpatuma (EX-Cat Race). “But what is the result of this military Exercise? Instead of the restoration of peace and security their presence here in Benue State there are more attacks on the people of the State. villages of our people.” “The number of Persons displaced as a result of the crisis has increased to over 175,000 while all schools in four or five local governments areas have also been closed down. “Regrettably, the military have not stopped further attacks by the herdsmen through the so called Exercise Ayem A’ Kpatuma. As a result, over 80 people have been killed from January till date including the 26 people who were brutally murdered in Omusu Edumoga, Okpokwu local government area of the State. “Sadly herdsmen under the cover of the military have invaded and taken over more “As the crisis raged, the Inspector General of Police publicly directed the seizure of arms from vigilante groups but failed to disarm the herdsmen militia who go about in the open. “Though with the full knowledge of what is happening in the state the IGP declared the senseless killings in Benue State as communal clash while no tribe in the state is fighting another. “The Minister of Defence and the IGP also attributed the wanton murder of Benue people to the law prohibiting open grazing in the state. “But it is also a well known fact that in states where the law for the establishment of ranches does not exit herdsmen and their militias are visiting mayhem and genocide on innocent communities. “As we speak, the security agencies have not stopped free passage to AK47 carrying herdsmen to freely attack and occupy part of Makurdi outskirts, beside Wadata area. “All these go to confirm the noble speech made by Gen. Danjuma. “As we speak also, Benue like Taraba, Pleteau and other minority states are under siege of marauders herdsmen with no visible efforts by the Federal Government, the Army or other security agencies to halt the invasion or senseless killings.

It is so, so easy to hate. Especially when we think somebody has hurt us or denied us what we believe we deserve. It agrees with our primordial instinct. It is also easy to seek revenge.
