President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday had a close-door meeting with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Council Chamber of Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting which started at 2:15 ended at 3:30pm, and couldn’t resolve the contentious tenure elongation for the members of the national and state executive committees of the party.
The governors declined comments as they came out of the venue of the meeting.
The governors, who appeared divided over the issue of tenure elongation for the party leaders, had met briefly before the arrival of the President for the meeting.
The President had at the APC National Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday said tenure elongation for the party leaders is illegal and unconstitutional.

“In particular, I think it is important for me to speak quickly on the contentious issue of the tenure of our National and State Executive Officers. As we all know, a motion was moved at the last National Executive Committee meeting of February 27, 2018, to the effect that when the tenure of the current executives expire in June this year, they should be allowed to continue for one year.
“This motion was duly carried by a majority of members present at the last NEC Meeting, even though some of our party members have since spoken up very vehemently against it. Others have even taken the matter to court.
“On my own part, I have taken some time to review and seek advice on the resolution. And what I found is that it contravenes both our party Constitution and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
Those who attended the meeting are Governor Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Governor Jubrilla Bindow (Adamawa), Governor Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa), Governor Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Governor Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo).
Governor Abdufattah Ahmed (Kwara), Governor Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Governor Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Governor Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa), Governor Kashim Shettima (Borno), Governor Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Governor Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), Governor Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Governor Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Governor Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Governor Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Governor Simon Lalong (Plateau), Governor Samuel Ortom (Benue), Governor Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Governor Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and the Deputy Governor of Bauchi state.

The ruling All progressive congress (APC) has inaugurated a ten members technical committee led by Governor Simon Lalong to look into the legal implications of the recent decision to extend tenure of the Chief John Odigie- Oyegun led National Working Committee ( NWC) and other executive at all levels.

The committee is also expected to look into President Muhammadu Buhari stand against the move.
Other members of the committee includes the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, Governor Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai (Kaduna), Senator Ben Uwajomogu, Rep Kabiru Ajana, Mr Elisha Kurah (SAN), Mr C.J.N Dakas (SAN) and the National Legal Adviser of the party, Muiz Banire who is also the secretary of the committee.
The National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie- Oyegun while inaugurating the committee at the party’s secretariat Tuesday in Abuja, said some of the issues that have been remitted to the committee for resolution are strongly legal, adding that the matter also impacted dramatically on political considerations.

“Therefore, your job is to bring these two together and advice us on the way we can implement our activities in the next few weeks and months in a way that is politically advantageous to our party, the APC and at the same time face due difference to the niceties of the law.
“We must observe the law and at the same time emphasis that we try to do things that will be advantageous to the party. We will furnish you with all the documents like the resolutions of NEC, the party’s constitution and the Nigeria constitution to help you do a good job.
“You are also at liberty to request for additional material like the statement of Mr President during last NEC meeting and every other thing to guide you achieve the task you are about to undertake. I am praying, hoping that this is the kind of thing you can accomplish in about three to four days.
“Getting answers from you is crucially time sensitive and depending on which way you advice, we may have to put in motion very serious activities in the party virtually within a week of getting the report and taking decisions. I thank you for accepting this onerous assignment and wish you the very best of luck.”
While fielding questions from newsmen, chairman of the committee, Simon Lalong faulted the notion that the talks centered around the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is opposed to the tenure elongation decision.
Said he: “The discussion there was not anything against Tinubu. Tinubu’s name was not mentioned in that discussion. The discussion was a NEC decision on the way forward on the position of the President who is also a member of the NEC and that was subjected to discussion. So the issue of whether it is satisfying somebody is not there. Our decision is not going to be final. We will only advice the NEC on the issue.”
On his own, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state, said the controversy was needless since the NEC did not extend the tenure of the Oyegun led NWC and party officials across the country.
