The population of Nigeria, the giant of Africa, is pegged at an estimated 198 million, according to the National Population Commission (NPC).

NPC Chairman, Eze Duruiheoma, said this in New York, yesterday, when he delivered Nigeria’s statement on sustainable cities, human mobility and international migration at the 51st session of the Commission on Population and Development.

Nigeria currently ranks the seventh most populous country in the world.

As of 2016, the World Bank said Nigeria had an estimated 186 million people.

Duruiheoma said urban population is growing at an average annual rate of about 6.5 percent, and added that that teenagers, women of child-bearing age and the working-age population, are more engaged in urbanisation.

“The recent World Population Prospects predicts that by 2050, Nigeria will become the third most populated country in the world.

“Over the last 50 years, Nigeria’s urban population has grown at an average annual growth rate of more than 6.5 percent without commensurate increase in social amenities and infrastructure.

“It grew substantially from 17.3 in 1967 to 49.4 percent in 2017.

“In addition, the 2014 World Urbanisation Prospects report predicts that by 2050, most of the population–70 percent–will reside in cities.

“The 2010 Human Mobility Survey Report revealed that 23 percent of the sampled population were of more females than males.”

Duruiheoma said an estimated 1.76 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) are from states in the North East.

According to him, existing urbanisation trend, coupled with IDPs in cities, pose critical challenges to securing sustainability of our cities.

He said just as in other developing countries, Nigerian cities host widespread poverty, under-employment and unemployment at an average of 18.4 percent, citing the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) 2017 report.

In an interview last year,  NPC Director General Ghaji Bello, said the commission might conduct census in 2018.

He had said the proposed census would cost an estimated N272 billion.

“Ordinarily, it ought to have a cycle of its own and that cycle should be five years or 10 years.

“We should have conducted the last census in 2016 but for a variety of reasons outside the control of the population commission, we were unable to do it,” he had said.

The last census was conducted in 2006.

Meanwhile, National Coordinator of Advocates for Peoples Rights and Justice, Mr. Victor Giwa, has faulted the census figure.

He said since no official census exercise has been conducted since 2006, the figure released by NPC cannot be tenable.

“NPC is the legal commission that keeps records of all the births of the citizens in Nigeria. They should ordinarily have the records of Nigeria. The last population census was conducted 12 years ago. The records he quoted is presumptuously about 30 per cent correct. He is giving the figure of what is available to him as chairman of the commission.

“That can’t be the legal census of Nigeria. Our capacity to know the true records of the number of people we are in Nigeria is still very weak. They have not conducted any recent census to have arrived at that figure they gave. The figure is faulty and it won’t work. The records are questionable since there is no proper records,” said Giwa.To the Organised Private Sector (OPS) and Organised Labour, the Federal Government has been unable to gainfully deploy the country’s population to grow the economy.

‎In separate reactions, OPS and Labour stated that the figure coming from the NPC should be accepted as the official figure for the present population of the country.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on National and State Assembly Commissions to provide strong and effective institutional support to the legislative houses, for greater independence of the legislature.

Wike made the call, yesterday, when he declared open the seventh National and State Assembly Commissions Conference in Port Harcourt open. He said the effective performance by the national and state assemblies would help in the development of democracy.

“It takes strong, independent and efficient national and state assemblies to advance the basic development goals.  Legislative houses also need strong and effective institutional support to be effective. This is where the role and relevance of national and state assemblies become necessary.

“Creation of the Assembly Service Commissions is vital as it has made the national and state assemblies one of the most independent in Africa.”

The governor said the recruitment, promotion and discipline of parliamentary staff by the national and state assembly commissions would ensure the executive does not control the legislative arm.

He said there is need for a cooperative relationship between the national and state assemblies for the entrenchment of democratic values at all levels.

In his address, Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission, Dr Adamu Fika, said in spite of the benefits of the State Assembly Service Commission to the development of the legislature, many states were yet to establish their commissions.

He appealed to all state governments yet to establish their assembly service commission, to do so, for the independence of the legislature.

He said: “The theme of this year’s conference, which is, ‘Enhancing synergy for service delivery in the legislature’, is meant to strengthen the foundation of the legislative service, by building a strong collaboration, to enhance nationwide synergy for service delivery.”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, represented by Deputy Chief Whip, Parley Iriase, said the House would work towards ensuring all states establish their assembly service commissions.

Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Sani Omolori, said the conference was necessary as it would build the capacity of parliamentary staff to work effectively.

Also, Chairman of Rivers State Assembly Service Commission, Chidi Amadi, said the state is glad to be the first to host the conference after seven years.

Elsewhere, Wike said his administration has provided entrepreneurial motivations for business to thrive in the state.

Family of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has asked the Federal Government to release the corpse of their son for burial if he is, indeed, dead.

An online newspaper had reported that a soldier, who gave his name as Isa Abubakar and claimed to have left the Nigeria Army since February, gave details of how Kanu was killed by the military, in an attempt to quell the agitation for Biafra.

The family spokesman, Emma Kanu, told Daily Sun  that the federal government should release Nnamdi’s corpse to them so as to give him a befitting burial.

Emma said ever since the IPOB leader disappeared last year, when his home was raided by the military, the family had always feared for his life.

“Now that it has been reported that he is dead, the federal government should, without hesitation release his corpse to his family, so that we and the entire Igbo nation can give him the befitting burial he deserves because he is a true Igbo son.”

The younger Kanu said even if the IPOB leader is out of Biafra struggle, it would not vitiate the resolve of IPOB and indeed the whole of Igbo to actualise Biafra.

On the call by Gen T.Y Danjuma for Nigerians to protect themselves since those saddled with the responsibility have failed them, Kanu said although the call was belated, however, it was a clarion call which IPOB would not take lightly.

“The call by Danjuma for people in the country to defend themselves means that the elder statesman has just started seeing what the IPOB leader, Kanu saw years back.

“All the same, it is a clarion call which IPOB will adhere to, no matter the circumstance.”
He called on IPOB members to always remain resolute in the struggle, saying in no distant time, the entire world would know the truth about the Biafran struggle.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over alleged plot by the Federal Government to frame up and humiliate Deputy Senate President,  Ike Ekweremadu, governors Nyesom Wike and Ayodele Fayose of Rivers and Ekiti states respectively as well as its presidential hopefuls  ahead of the 2019 general elections.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said to actualise the sinister plot, the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled Federal Government has set up a presidential committee to persecute leaders of the opposition party.

Ologbondiyan, who spoke during a press conference at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, however, vowed that they would resist all attempts to cow them.

Ekweramadu, recently, has been in the eye of the storm over alleged non-declaration of assets, particularly 22 houses scattered in different parts of the world, including Abuja.

Also, few days ago, Wike alleged plans by the government to set him up abroad.

The PDP spokesman said since the ruling party discovered that its chances in the 2019 general elections was becoming slimmer, it has decided to launch a frontal attack on leading opposition leaders, perceived presidential hopefuls and other credible Nigerians.

Ologbodiyan claimed the APC and the Federal Government have become “mortally afraid” of the PDP’s new status as a rallying point for Nigerians.

He said that was the reason the APC-led Federal Government in its desperate bid to win the 2019 general election has resorted to undemocratic activities under the guise of fighting corruption.

“You are already aware of the numerous exposed plots by the APC and its Federal Government to frame up and humiliate the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, as well as PDP governors, particularly, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and his Ekiti state counterpart, Governor Ayo Fayose.

“This is in addition to advanced plots by the Federal Government to clampdown on key leaders of the party and begin to drop in public places, alleged confessional statements made under duress in the desperate attempt to achieve a pre-determined end of validating the bandying of corruption allegations against members of the PDP.

“We have also been made aware of a special presidential committee put up by the APC Federal Government to persecute our leaders. Already, no fewer than 28 cases have been filed based on trumped up charges. Also, we are privy to series of clandestine meetings between agents of the APC and some compromised judicial officers to get conviction at all cost,” Ologbondiyan said.

He added: “Let it be known to all that this is a repositioned PDP that cannot be cowed and that we are more than able, willing and overtly ready to use all means practical and available within the ambits of the law and the principles of democracy to stiffly resist and stop the APC and the Federal Government in this evil scheme.
