Witnesses told TheCable that the suspects stormed the village around 7pm on Wednesday; many houses were set ablaze and several people were injured.

A resident, Victor, said that the over 200 attackers took the villagers unawares.

Adi Grace, chairman of the local government council, confirmed the attack to reporters but said he could not give casualty figures.

“Many people were killed in the attack. As I am speaking with you now, I don’t have the casualty figures, until when I am back from the village because I am on my way there now,” he said.

Commenting on the attack, Luka Agbo, former chairman of the Wukari Youths of Vision, said: “It is true that Jandeikyula village was attacked in the night and, from the reports we are getting, over 30 people were killed.

“The series of attacks in the state now make us live in fear because we can no longer go to bed with our two eyes closed.”

David Misal, spokesman of the police in the state, also confirmed the attack but could not give details.

“We are aware that an attack took place yesterday at Jandeikyula village in Wukari local government,” he said.

“As for the number of casualties, the information available to the command is still very sketchy. I hope to get back to you as soon as the actual details of the attack get to my desk.”

Taraba, lile Benue and Plateau, is one of the states affected by clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on Nigerians to prevail on the National Assembly to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the 2010 Electoral Act Amendment Bill, to guarantee free, fair and credible electoral system in the country.

Wike made the call yesterday, when he addressed the 2018 Annual Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) section on Legal Practice Conference, in Port Harcourt.

He urged Nigerian legal practitioners to rise and insist on the relevance of the amended Electoral Act 2010.

“We must all stand up against the devilish efforts by some anti-democratic forces, to kill the ongoing process to amend the 2010 Electoral Act, on the whimsical excuse that the order of elections proposed in the Amendment Bill contravenes the discretionary powers of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which, in any case, has not complained of any mischief occasioned by the new order.

“Let me remind us that a defining feature of the legal profession is the commitment to promote both the substantive rules and the processes of the law, as well as defend the democratic values of our society,” he said.

Wike, who said the 2010 Electoral Act was enacted to promote credible elections, alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC), working with the INEC and the police, manipulated the Act to rig the rerun elections in Rivers.

He said in view of the alleged fraudulent activities of INEC, APC and the police, the tribunal and the Court of Appeal upheld results allegedly concocted by the police for the Rivers rerun elections.

He said: “We all saw how result sheets were duplicated with identical serial numbers and handed over to the police to enter fake results and returns, in favour of the candidates of the APC in the said elections.

“What all these mean is that a thousand electoral laws may amount to nothing, for as long as the Federal Government, the INEC, the police and other government agencies which may legally or illegally be brought into the election process, continue to disrespect the law and trample on our democratic rights to free and fair elections with impunity, and without suffering any legal pains or punishment for their criminal conduct.”

Wike urged the legal profession to constantly reinvent and reposition itself in response to existing and new challenges, both in the theory and practice of the law.

The governor also said lawyers must rethink the way they practice, to remain relevant in the profession and meet the needs of their clients and society, in the most professional, diligent and efficient manner.

Senate has suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege for 90 legislative days, about six months, after a report of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions was adopted.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu chairs the committee.

The committee had earlier recommended, in its report, that Omo-Agege be suspended for one year.

The sentence was, however, reduced, following Senate President, Bukola Saraki’s intervention, including three All Progressives Congress (APC) senators: Ahmad Lawan (Senate Leader), Bala Ibn Na’Allah and Kabiru Marafa.

Omo-Agege was suspended over allegations during a press conference that Senate amended the Electoral Act (2010), to frustrate President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid.

He was also suspended for dragging Senate before a court.

Omo-Agege was in the chamber when his suspension was announced but was led out of the chamber by members of the Parliamentary Support Group for President Muhammadu Buhari, chaired by senator Abdullahi Adamu.

Apart from the suspension handed down to Omo-Agege, Senate also disbanded various groups in the Red Chamber, with special emphasis on Buhari’s support group. Omo-Agege is the second lawmaker in the Eight Senate to be suspended since it was inaugurated on the June 9, 2015.

Former senate leader, Ali Ndume, was suspended in March 2017, for six months. His suspension, has however been nullified by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Senate has appelaed the ruling.

Trouble started when Anyanwu presented his committee’s report and explained how Omo-Agege declined to make any comments when he appeared before the panel.

He also criticised the lawmaker for dragging the Senate before a Federal High Court and recommended that “Omo-Agege be punished, to serve as deterrent to others who abuse legislative processes. Omo-Agege is a member of the Ethics committee and he understands how the process works. When he appeared before us, he refused to respond to questions posed to him.

“He said since the case was already in court, he could no longer comment.

“We feel that this was a slight on the Senate and we needed to stop practices like this. Our committee is recommending that Omo-Agege be suspended for 181 days for making false allegations against the Senate…”

On his part, Saraki gave Omo-Agege a lifeline to escape the six months suspension.

He also said the existence of the controversial Pro-Buhari group in the chamber is a threat to the unity of the Senate.

“I am appealing that we reduce the number of days. But, we need to send a strong message to everyone that the Senate is an important institution that must be protected. Some of us will not be here tomorrow. If we destroy this institution, we will run into trouble.

“I am recommending from here that we make it 90 legislative days. Within this period, we expect the senator to withdraw the court case and members of the Buhari support group to disband it immediately. If they do this thing, we may come back here and review this decision,” said Saraki.

Also, Lawan had earlier pleaded with the chamber not to suspend Omo-Agege.

Adamu declined to comment on Omo-Agege’s suspension.  He said a proper statement would be issued later. He said this in company with Omo-Agege, Ndume and others.
