NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE DAILY SUN NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [16 APRIL, 2018].

Below are the headlines found on The Daily Sun Online Newspaper for today, Monday,  16 April, 2017.

No fewer than 17 of the parents of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls have died due to trauma associated with the abduction.

This is even as Senate President, Bukola Saraki, called for concerted efforts by governments, security agencies, religious and community leaders, to rescue the remaining 112 Chibok girls and the Dapchi schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, from captivity.

The 276 schoolgirls were abducted in a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, by the Boko Haram Islamist sect on April 14, 2014.

Co-ordinator of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement in Lagos State, Mrs. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, made the disclosure at the weekend at the 4th anniversary of the abduction with theme: “Four years too long,” an event marked with Christian and Muslim prayers.

She said though some of the girls had regained freedom, the fact that 112 of the girls were still with Boko Haram was too long.

“While we are not unaware of the efforts made so far by government of Nigeria in securing the release of 103 girls from captivity, four years is too long and totally unacceptable

“In fact, on May 14, 2017, we were expecting 83 girls. On May 6, only 82 agreed to board the plane to freedom.

“That still haunts me till today. Saraya Paul whose father told me as far back as October 2015, that ‘God has blessed me with eight children and they are all obedient but none has honoured me as much as Saraya.’

“Saraya offered to remain with her captors. We have failed these children and continue to fail their families.”

Muhammed-Oyebode, daughter of the assassinated Head of State, General Muritala Ramat Muhammed, expressed shock that some queried BBOG’s struggle for the release of the abducted girls.

This, she opined was a tragic reflection of the Nigerian society’s desensitization to evil:

“The abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls and Dapchi schoolgirls is an attack on the soul of Nigeria.

“The kidnapping of innocent girls from school is totally unacceptable and we demand collective action to fight this monster in Nigeria.

“The rights of children, women and girls must be provided for, protected and promoted as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The prayer session was led by Pastor Ituah Ighodalo of Trinity House Church, Lagos, and Alhaji Tajudeen Adebayo, Imam of Falomo Police Mosque.

Saraki in a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja, said even though four years had elapsed since the sad incident of the Chibok girls’ kidnap, it must not dampen efforts being made to see the girls rescued and reunited with their families and loved ones.

Barely one week after leaving Nigeria for the United Kingdom on vacation, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday met with former governor of Lagos State and  National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the Abuja House, in London.

The Buhari-Tinubu meeting was made public through a photograph released by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Mr. Femi Adesina.

The photograph, which showed President Buhari adoring  a caftan with a cap and  Tinubu wearing a black jacket, had a caption: “President Buhari receives in audience Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in London on 15th Apr 2018.”

Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Bashir Ahmad, also confirmed the meeting on tweeter handle, @BashirAhmad, in Abuja, where he wrote: “President Muhammadu Buhari receives National leader of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu (Jagaba) today in London.’’

Although details of the meeting were not made public, snippets gathered by Daily Sun revealed that Buhari and Tinubu discussed recent developments in the APC.

Sources revealed that the two APC leaders talked about the proposed national convention of the ruling party, especially the chairmanship position.

Tunubu is in the forefront of agitation for the exit of APC National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, which came to a head a few weeks ago when Buhari opposed tenure elongation earlier approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

It is believed that Tinubu wants Oyegun to be replaced by former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who was said to have met with some aides of the president in Abuja last week on the project.

In yesterday’s meeting, it was gathered that the candidacy of Oshiomhole also came up, just like Buhari’s declaration for the 2019 presidency.

Sources revealed that since Buhari did not hint Tinubu about his intention to declare for 2019 president before he formally did, yesterday’s meting afforded him the opportunity to brief the former governor and solicited his support.

In what could be described as a formal endorsement, the former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, has urged women and youths in the country to cue behind the Chief Olu Falae-led Social Democratic Party (SPD) for the 2019 general election.

General Babangida made call in Minna, at the weekend, when the national leadership of the party, led by the its national chairman, Chief Olu Falae, visited him at his hill-top mansion in Minna.

He said: “If I hadn’t been too old, I would have loved to join the youths vanguard of your party. I have faith in the political party, for what it is and what it stands for.

“When I heard in the news, that a party has come on board, the first thing that occurred to me was that the name sounded familiar, so, I decided to wait and see how it plays out. I was looking at how SDP will populate itself. And, then, the next pleasing thing I heard was that it has people like Olu Falae, Professor Jerry Gana and Professor Adeniran. After that, I said this party is real, because most of the names are names I’ve known and worked with for the sake of this country, so, I said the party is smart to have convinced all these gentlemen to come and join it.

“That was why I did not hesitate to recommend the party to those who came me to seek advice on which direction to go.”

Babangida said  the vision he had for the country is the same vision that is shared by those driving the party, adding that, “the security and well being of Nigerians is very important, and you have identified this in your programme, so, Nigerians must support you to ensure that this is realisable.

“I know it can be done, I have never said this to any political party before, but, I can tell you that the party has people who have contributed a lot to this country, people whose contributions to Nigeria is legendary, and what you have put ahead of you is what this country needs.

“I remember when Jerry Gana was the Chairman of Mass Mobilisation for Self Reliance, Social Justice, and Economic Recovery (MAMSER), one of the primary things he was doing was to educate the ordinary people. The level of awareness then was not as high as it is now, so, you should take advantage of the digital age now and pass a lot of information to the young men and women of this country, because they form over 65 per cent of the population, and if you succeed in doing that, I think it will be better for this country.

Babangida  called on the younger generation, including the Nigerian women, to rally behind SDP because it is populated by men of integrity, “men who, when they work, they work well, when they speak, they speak well.”
