President Muhammadu Buhari’s closed-door meeting with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the State House ended in deadlock, yesterday.

The meeting, which started at 2:15, ended at 3:30pm, after a storming session characterised by heated and bitter argument, while all the governors refusing to talk to State House Correspondents. All the governors approached including Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Lalong and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to speak on the outcome of  the agreement reached declined to comment.

The bone of contention, according to findings, is the tenure elongation of the John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Executive Committee (NEC)) and the proposed caretaker committee to be led by former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole. Majority of the governors are in favour of tenure elongation for Oyegun.

Daily Sun investigations revealed that President Buhari had at some point during the meeting left the governors to decide on the next date the meeting would reconvene. While the Zamfara Governor and Chairman of the Governors Forum, Abdulazeez Yari, proposed April 9 and 10, El-Rufai, challenged him on why he picked those dates.

According to a source in the know, the meeting became rowdy as each camp tried to push its position through. At a point, the governors stomped out of the meeting venue.

Some of the governors emerged from the venue of the meeting wearing a frown, while others in order to douse the tensed atmosphere, held their lips, indicating they were not going to comment.

One of the governors was heard telling his colleagues: “Some people who think they are tall think they can control us, it will not work.”

Earlier, before President Buhari entered the Council Chambers for the meeting, the governors had formed a circle round the chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Okorocha of Imo State, and were seen arguing. Some were overheard saying: “What they are bringing to the table today we will not allow it to stand. This is a coup and we will not allow it to stand.”

All the APC governors were in attendance including, the governor of Ogun, Ibikunle Amosun, who joined 30 minutes after the meeting had commenced.

El-Rufai had arrived the Presidential Villa at about 10am ahead of the meeting earlier scheduled for 2pm and went straight to the president’s office.

The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, came in crutches, following an accident he had over the Easter holiday.

Governors of Plateau State, Simon Lalong and Kebbi, Atiku Bagudu had said the opening prayers before the commencement of the meeting.

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) , Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has given 10-member Technical Committee to review extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC) four days to submit a report.

Oyegun has lined up the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, four Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) as well as four state governors to review the contrversial one year extension granted the NWC by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party in February.

Last month, at the NEC meeting, President Muhammadu Buhari kicked against tenure elongation for Oyegun and others. Buhari said it was against the party’s constitution, as well as that of the country.

The committee is expected to find lasting solution to the contentious extension of the tenure of the current national and state officers of the party.

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, is chairman of the committee while APC National Legal Adviser, Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN) will serve as member and committee secretary.

Other members of the committee include governors of Oyo, Kaduna and Ondo states, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and Olurotimi Akeredolu (SAN), Senator Ben Uwajumogu, Honourable Kabiru Ajana, Elisha Kurah (SAN) and C.J.N. Dakas (SAN).

Inaugurating the panel in Abuja, yesterday, Oyegun said: “Some of the issues that have been remitted to you for resolution are strongly legal and, at the same time, impacted dramatically by political considerations.

“Therefore, your job is to bring these two together and advice us on the way we can implement our activities in the next few weeks and months, in a way that is politically advantageous to our party, the APC and at the same time, face due difference to the niceties of the law.

“We must observe the law and, at the same time, emphasise that we try to do things that will be advantageous to the party. We will furnish you with all the documents, like the resolutions of NEC, the party’s constitution and the Nigerian Constitution to help you do a good job. You are also at liberty to request for additional material, like the statement of Mr. President during last NEC meeting and every other thing to guide you achieve the task you are about to undertake. I am praying, hoping that this is the kind of thing you can accomplish in about three to four days.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday insisted that it has no case to answer regarding the list of alleged looters released by the Federal Government.

Federal Government, had in two tranchees, named alleged looters of the federation account, particularly during the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan.

But the PDP said those on the list, some of who are not even its members, were individuals who have neither been indicted nor convicted for corruption by any court.

The opposition party in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) had wanted to use the looters’ list as a ploy to divert public discourse on their failures in the administration of the country.

The PDP said some of the issues the government wanted to divert attention from included the “vote of no confidence on the Buhari administration by eminent statesmen, including former President Obasanjo, former military President Ibrahim Babangida and former minister of defence and ex-chief of army staff, Gen. TY Danjuma, who also indicted the administration of failure to protect the citizens.

But a lawyer and former Minister of Information and Culture, Prince Tony Momoh, said the disclosure of names of alleged treasury looters by the Federal Government was done to meet the yearnings of Nigerians who have been asking for it.

Momoh said: “Don’t forget that Nigerians have been asking him to release the list. People have been saying release, release, release, release. If they said release and they now take a decision to release, obviously, people will say you are not even releasing enough. So, it is a question of political decision to release,” Momoh said.

However, believing that the recent releases  of the lists violated constitutional tenets of fair hearing, due process of the law and impugns the constitutional integrity of the Court system in Nigeria in accordance with section 6 of the Nigerian constitution, the Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA) has resolved to petition the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to begin the process of disbarring the duo of Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the information minister and Alhaji Abubakar Malami, the federal Attorney General from practising as lawyers in Nigeria.

Nigerians have continued to react to the blistering criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. While some lauded the former president’s intervention and joined forces with him to campaign against President Buhari’s re-election in 2019, others believe his criticism was not only self-serving but in bad taste.

Obasanjo had called on Nigerians not to reinforce incompetence in 2019 by voting out the All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by Buhari, which he said has failed judging by the results of the last three years and its numerous excuses for non-performance.

To the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, the call by Obasanjo vindicated his position that the Buhari has nothing to offer the country.

According to Fayose in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti by his media aide, Lere Olayinka: “What Obasanjo said is not new from what I said before and after President Buhari was elected. I have consistently maintained that the president lacked the required mental, physical and intellectual capacity to govern a country like Nigeria and now, I have been vindicated by even those who were at the forefront of his election.”

Similarly, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, former works minister  admonished President Buhari to listen to Obasanjo,  former minister of defence, General T. Y. Danjuma as well as other elder statesmen, who have criticised his administration in recent times.

“Buhari should not allow people advising him to mislead him. When people of that calibre are talking in a nation, the president should listen. They don’t talk for their sake alone. They are talking for a purpose.  And the most important thing is for Mr. President to call them to a meeting,” he stated.

For allegedly foistering Buhari on the nation, Ebun Adegboruwa said the Obasanjo lacked the moral authority to reverse himself and tell the country who to vote for.

“He introduced us to the late president Musa Yar’Adua, but that was aborted because of Yar’Adua’s demise. He then introduced us to Goodluck Jonathan, but that didn’t work; he is also now saying that Buhari is a failure. It means that out of the three projects that he introduced to us, it didn’t work because none has taken us to our Eldorado. As a citizen of Nigeria, Obasanjo has the right to assess any administration, but he is not in a position to guide us on who to vote for, especially because of our three previous experiences over those he had recommended to us,”  Adegboruwa said.

Notwithstanding his role in Buhari’s emergence, spokesman of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said Obasanjo’s assessment of Buhari is apt.
