NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE DAILY SUN NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [9TH APRIL, 2018].

Below are the headlines found on The Daily Sun Online Newspaper for today, Monday,  9th April, 2017.

Mon, 09 Apr 2018
As the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) today holds what has been dubbed a make or break National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by some of its chieftains, the party has been split into three, along top runners in the race for the post of national chairman.

It was gathered that members and chieftains of the APC are looking beyond tenure elongation for the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), towards who would take over the leadership of the party, ahead of the presidential primaries.

Sources close to party revealed that the fate of Oyegun to continue in office beyond June had already been sealed, going by the recommendations of the Governor Simon Lalong committee, which the NWC had set up to advise it on the way forward, in reaction to the sudden U-turn of President Muhammadu Buhari on tenure elongation for the party’s national exco.

Although details of the report have not been made public, Daily Sun gathered that the committee dashed the hope of the Oyegun-led NWC, as it kicked against tenure elongation for any of the party’s executives.

A member of the party’s NEC said there was no way the Lalong committee could have gone against President Buhari, who said no to tenure elongation for the APC leaders. He said the APC could have gone ahead to plan for a national convention after Buhari spoke against tenure elongation instead of setting up a committee to “now suggest a way forward.

“Although I have not seen the report of the Lalong committee, I can however, confirm to you that it cannot go against what the president wants. We are running against time, if only our members know. We need to hold the convention on time, so that whatever crisis that comes out of it can be resolved before we move into primaries in August or thereabout,” the party chieftain said.

Another party chieftain, who is about the third in hierarchy to Oyegun, also confirmed to Daily Sun yesterday that there was no way the Lalong committee would go against the president.

According to him, once the report is received and recommendations endorsed, the next thing would be to discuss about the congresses and set up committees that would come up with dates for the convention and congresses from wards to the states level.

With tenure elongation out of the picture, three tendencies, which are for a South-South national chairman, have emerged in APC, sources revealed.

One of the groups is pushing for Oyegun to seek reelection. Another group wants former Edo State governor, Adam Oshiomhole, while a third tendency wants ex-Cross River State governor, Clement Ebri.

Daily Sun gathered that some governors are putting pressure on Oyegun to consider seeking a second term, since the party’s constitution and Election Guidelines 2014, do not preclude him from running.

Sources close to the party’s national chairman, however, said he was undecided as at press time yesterday.

It was gathered that Oyegun is undecided yet over the provisions of the APC constitution, which stipulates that any party officials seeking reelection or any public servant seeking party office must quit 30 days to the national convention.  By that provision, Oyegun would have to leave office before the expiration of his tenure in June.

The dilemma of the national chairman’s camp, it was gathered, is whether those pushing him to re-contest would stand by him by the time he resigns.

Former Governor of Abia State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, at the weekend continued his peace advocacy tour with a visit to Ondo and Ekiti states.

In Ado-Ekiti, Kalu, who is acting chairman of the Advisory Board for National Movement for Re-election President Muhammadu Buhari took a swipe at  former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who he said ran the  most corrupt democratic government in the history of the nation.

Kalu, who expressed resentment at the comment credited to Obasanjo asking President Buhari not to seek second term in office, said the former number one citizen lacked the moral standing to stop a president  that has been the most selfless in Nigeria’s history from contesting.

Kalu, who was welcomed to Ekiti State by an APC governorship aspirant  and former speaker, Femi Bamisile pleaded with Nigerians to embrace the second term bid of  President Buhari.

Addressing the APC members at Bamisile’s house at GRA in Ado Ekiti, Kalu said: “Nigerians should tell former President Obasanjo to stop writing frivolous letters. It was said that someone who behaved badly by not listening to advice could talk like this. Let me tell you emphatically that President Buhari will contest again, don’t listen to letter writers like Obasanjo. Obasanjo has been president twice, so he should keep his letter in Otta for himself.

“If anyone will caution President Buhari, it should not be Obasanjo. If you check your records very well, he remains the most corrupt president ever. He came into office with less than N20,000 and he later built multibillion naira Otta Farm, Library Project  and the Hilltop Mansion.

“That is why somebody like me is in Ekiti to tell our people not to listen to Obasanjo. He met the  economy in comatose, today President Buhari has raised the foreign reserve from $23 billion  to as much as $47 billion dollars while the menace of Boko Haram has been defeated,” Kalu stated.

On the July 14 governorship poll, Kalu urged Ekiti delegates to vote wisely, by voting an aspirant who has the political network and dexterity to defeat Fayose.

“You need to work very hard because President Buhari doesn’t believe in rigging. I am ready to support whoever you bring up as candidate here in Ekiti for the July 14 election, because I am part of you.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has accused the Presidency of shopping for  political endorsements for President Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of next year’s general election.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the “recent stage-managed political endorsements” are “hypocritical and disgusting signs of desperation.”

The party equally  alleged  that the endorsements were coordinated by three presidential aides, a serving minister from the South South and some officials of the All Progressives Congress(APC).

“This cabal is also responsible for the renting of crowds who are usually conveyed in buses, trucks and trailers, to fill the space during president Buhari’s visits to various states of the Federation, as witnessed in Benue, during the last visit of Mr. President.”

The party alleged that recently, the government organised some Arewa pastors, to visit Buhari, in Aso Rock and endorse him for the 2019 presidential contest.

“It is heartrending that because of the desperation of one man, the integrity of Nigeria’s seat of power has again been ridiculed as the world watched religious bodies and groups in the country disowning the procured band.

“The fact that this disgraceful drama came barely a week after our nation suffered an international show of shame over president Buhari’s presentation with a procured award fraudulently linked to the late Martin Luther King Jr, speaks volumes of this administration’s proclivity for falsehood, lies and deception.

“Having failed to gain any endorsements from reputable international figures, such as Bill Gates and the Martin Luther Kings Jr group, the APC and the Presidency have now, shamelessly, resorted to cheaper ways and means, particularly, along the unregulated and porous religious and sectional lines.

“It is now overtly manifest that the Buhari administration is ready to even stage anything, no matter how ignoble, including fake rescue missions, to deceive Nigerians,” it said.

The PDP stated that if Buhari had fulfilled the least of his numerous 2015 campaign promises to Nigerians, there would not have been any need for the government to be shopping for awards and endorsements, ahead of next year’s election.

“That president Buhari could be begging for endorsements only points to the fact that he and his cabal have lost the support of Nigerians whom his administration has subjected to horrible economic hardships, traumatic bloodletting and a bleak future,”it said.

Regardless, the APC has dismissed PDP’s claims.

Reacting to the PDP, National Publicity Secretary of the ruling party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, initially said APC has no time replying trivialities from the opposition party, but noted that there is no truth in such claims.

Former governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, has called on the Federal Government to be “ruthless” against alleged looters of the nation’s treasury.

Oshiomhole said this to the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin, yesterday, where he described as mindless, the stealing by then Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led federal government.

He said it is the right of Nigerians to know the level of rot that transpired in former president Goodluck Jonathan’s government.

“I think if other Nigerians don’t understand the power of transparency, the right to know, the media should uphold that right and defend it. What was stolen was not from private purse; the house that was destroyed was not a private residence. We are talking of resources, which, if it is distributed on the basis of equality, divide by 180 million people, you will be a lot richer.

“I think my only complaint is that the federal government should be more ruthless because there are a lot of people who should be in court who are not there.

“When I was still in office and I said the kind of money they stole was huge in dollars, they paid hired writers to ask how I knew. I have interacted with power, vertically and horizontally. I know that we cannot be lamenting, today, without understanding that the treasury was burgled yesterday.

“One of the acting chairmen of PDP, Ahmed Makarfi, I used to respect him so much, I heard him saying that the reason they did not indict Diezani was that the money missing and everything that was done, Goodluck approved.

“If President approved the money, should it be stolen and not go into the federation account or used for the intended purpose. Jonathan may have immunity against prosecution but he doesn’t have power to appropriate what the national assembly have not done.

In a swift response, the PDP described Oshiomhole’s comments on the alleged looters’ list, as completely self-serving.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said Oshiuomhole is only looking for a job.
