Though President Muhammadu Buhari has declared his intention to run for second term after months of speculations, concern is been raised over his health status and age to run the affairs of the most populous country in Africa. Some analyst also believe that with the President clocking 75 years in 2019 and in a country where the average life span is from 40-45, younger persons ought to have played active role during the 2019 presidential race. But President Buhari, who made his intention known at a closed-door meeting of the National Executive Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Monday, said he was responding to the clamour by Nigerians for him to re-contest in 2019, adding that he wanted to accord APC NEC the honour of being the first to know. The Daily Times recalls that Buhari left the country on May 7, 2017 after handing over power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He returned to Nigeria after receiving medical attention in London for about 104 days. But Buhari’s absence during the period led to calls in certain quarters, asking him to step down if he was unable to perform his duties. Meanwhile, following his declaration to run for second term on Monday, some senior lawyers and medical practitioners have expressed divergent views over the health and age status of President Buhari. Reacting to the development, a senior lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), said that it is God alone that determines the lifespan of a man. The senior advocate said, “God owns our lives. Life span has nothing to do with age and health. May God save and prolong President Buhari’s life”. Also, an Abuja based lawyer, Hameed Ajibola Jimoh, said pursuant to sections: 131, 137(1) (b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the issues of health and age do not disqualify the president from running for second term. According to him, the objections to his second term might just be regarded as personal views and opinions of some individuals who might be the President’s critics or oppositions, insisting that the views do not have legal back up. Jimoh said, ‘’The voters have their voting powers to change an unwanted elected public officer if they wish. I am of the firm view that where elections are conducted fairly and freely, this issue can be resolved by the voting powers of the Nigerian voters. In the meantime, a senior medical practitioner, who spoke in confidence, insisted that Buhari should take a bow because the world has long moved beyond the older generation. He said, “Age matters because the world is changing. The world is a global village and technology has taken over so many things. The world has moved from his generation. You look at the world leaders now; talk about France the president is 39, go to Australia, the country’s president is 41. Everybody is going back to young people that are vibrant. For Nigeria, 80% of us are youths. Why should we allow these old people to keep ruling us, it’s not a good idea any how you look at it. ‘’Outside the president of Tunisia, who is 88 and Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo (74), Buhari is the oldest. In my own opinion, he has not fulfilled his electoral promises for about three years, so what are we really looking for.” He added that for a country like Nigerian with a population of about 200 million people, it would not be wise to allow the president to still preside over the affairs of the country for another four years. ‘’He is quite old. If you look at the last three years, he has been spending our tax payers money travelling abroad for medical treatment and nobody is even talking about it. It won’t be a good idea for him to rule for another four years, he should just take a bow and go and rest. That is my candid opinion,’’ he added. But a private medical practitioner, Dr Austin Abidemi, shared a contrary view. He said that age is not a yardstick to determine or measure politics or the performance of any government, rather wisdom and zeal to deliver. He expressed disappointment that some Nigerians especially critics of President Buhari’s administration have resort to using age and sickness to blackmail his bid to run beyond 2019.

Campaigners of the #Bring back our girls have said that it will on April 14 commemorate the 4th year anniversary of the abduction of Chibok Girls from their secondary school in Chibok, Borno State. Preparatory to the event, which is coming up in Abuja, the movement in a press release signed by Mr. Jeff Okoroafor, said Nigerians should not be unaware of the fact that the 276 school girls that were verified by the Presidential Task Force and abducted by Boko Haram terrorists have not all been released, while 57 escaped on their own, leaving 219 captive. The group also stated that back in October 2016, 24 of them were recovered largely through negotiation by the Federal Government indirectly from various military operations mounted by the Nigerian Army. Then in May 2017, 84 more were also recovered through negotiation by the Federal Government, and in December, 1 of the Chibok Girl was found along with another abducted young woman. This it said brings the total of recovered Chibok Girls to 107, leaving the parents and community of the 112 girls that remain in captivity extremely disappointed at their fate. The statement reads on part, “Our Movement which has advocated for the rescue of our #ChibokGirls by the Federal Government for 1443 days was counting the days until all the girls are back unfortunately, we have been thrown into an agonising grief when we learnt as with the world of a shameful repeat of history with the disgraceful and unavoidable abduction of 110 girls from a secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe State, nearly four years later. “Over the 1443 days of our advocacy, we have constantly declared that our Chibok Girls are a symbol of the Girl Child in Nigeria, the abduction and the prolonged captivity of the remaining 112 girls has become an assault on girl child education especially in the North East”. Further speaking, the group said that it is a known fact that a nation that leaves behind its female population is an underdeveloped society. The group also said, “The unresolved plight of the abductions is regarded as a de-motivator for poor parents who should be convinced that educating their daughters is the best decision they can make for themselves and society at large. The growth of our nation is under threat”. It noted that despite its challenges, it has remained relentless until all the girls are rescued and given another fair chance to acquire the formal education they were seeking before their abduction. The group said, “Our movement posits that there must be no barrier stopping the education of every girl child in the North, East, West and South, of Nigeria. “It is for this reason that during our Year Four Global Week of Action, #BringBackOurGirls will ensure that our Chibok Girls — and now, our Dapchi Girls — other abductees, and all out-of-school girls in Nigeria are the focus of our annual Chibok Girls Lecture. The theme of this year’s annual lecture is: “Towards a just and and good society: Renewing our commitment to the Girl Child in Nigeria. “We believe that it is now more critical than ever to assure the Girl-Child, Parents, and Communities across Nigeria that we are with them on their legitimate desire to educate their children and aspire for a brighter future. “We invite you to re-ignite those dreams as we gather for our 2nd Annual Chibok Girls Lecture”.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leadership have said that it will continue to hold Chief John Nwodo, South East governors, Nigerian Army and some Lagos-based political errand boys responsible for the murder of dozens of agitators during Operation Python Dance II. The IPOB leaders also accused Chief Nwodo and South East governors, especially Dave Umahi and Okezie Ikpeazu and their associates of compromise over the killings of innocent IPOB members whose only crime was to stand up for their right in defence of the honour and dignity of the Igbo race and entire people of Biafra. In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma, stated that Nwodo and South East governors must know that the Ndigbo are now enlightened enough not to accept their gimmicks and lies. According to the group, Nwodo’s call fo the Nigerian Army to probe the massacre in Abia and Rivers State is medicine after death. It said, “There was no justification for Nnia Nwodo and South East governors to betray or sabotage the efforts of Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB who were merely trying to rescue their nation Biafra from the hell Nigeria had become. “The damage of Operation Python Dance has already been done. Those that perished as a result of the actions of Nnia Nwodo and South East governors, will never again rise from the grave. “Therefore, it will be foolhardy for Ohaneze Ndigbo and South East governors to act as though we have all of sudden forgotten the event of the 14th of September, 2017 that occasioned the killing of our vibrant youths in cold blood and possible murder of our leader and his parents.’ It added that Nwodo and his associates will never exonerate themselves from such crime against humanity by merely offering warm words at a function in Enugu. “Any probe of the military invasion of Igboland and killing of IPOB members at Afaraukwu Umuahia, Isiala Ngwa, Aba and Obigbo Igweocha must start with the role Nwodo, Umahi, Ikpeazu and other governors played. ” They cannot join hands with the spirit of the dead to kill at night, then join the living during daylight to shed Crocodile tears at the funeral of their victims. Those IPOB members slaughtered by soldiers died because Nnia Nwodo, Dave Umahi, Okezie Ikpeazu wanted Nnamdi Kanu killed at all cost in order to stop IPOB and please the North who threatened to kill Igbo people living in Northern Nigeria if Biafra agitation is not stopped. “We urge the public to carefully scrutinise the statements of Nnia Nwodo, Okezie Ikpeazu and Dave Umahi during and immediately after the military siege at our Kanu’s compound between 10-14 September 2017 to find answers to many questions regarding the role these Igbo men played in masterminding the slaughter of their own people, “ it added.

Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has urged private medical institutions in Nigeria to reduce the high cost of their services in the country. Mrs Buhari spoke on Wednesday when the officials of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria visited her in her office at the State House, Abuja. She observed that many Nigerians who do not have access to public health services resort to private hospitals which are very expensive and this has implications on not just the patients but the nation’s health indices. She said, “Private health care is expensive, your association needs to revisit the issue of charges” just as she called on practitioners to “make treatments affordable so that more people can access your services and health outcomes can improve.” In a statement made available by Suleiman Haruna, Director of Information, Office of Wife of the President, State House, Mrs Buhari lamented the brain drain in the health sector, saying people travel abroad mostly to be treated by Nigerian practitioners. She called for better working conditions for them so that they are encouraged to remain in Nigeria. She said, “I also urge your association to check cases of malpractice by private hospitals, which are becoming more rampant.” She recommended a Public-Private Partnership, whereby private sector firms can invest in the health sector and reduce the burden on government. “That is why I am convening a stakeholder event soon, to draw their attention to the possibilities and opportunities in the sector. she added. Responding, President of the Association, Dr. Frank Odofen, commended wife of the President’s commitment to the health of women and children through the Future Assured Programme, which dovetailed into her recent appointment as UNAIDS ambassador, believing that with her passion, health care indices will improve in Nigeria. President of World Organization of Family Doctors, Prof. Amanda Howe, who was on a two-day visit to Nigeria, observed that the pronouncements and programmes of Mrs. Buhari are worthy of emulation as the challenges in the health sector require strong commitment. She noted that medical personnel working in communities in Nigeria were doing wonderful jobs by providing support and preventing diseases through education of families, patients and health workers.
