NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE NATION NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [15 APRIL, 2018].

Below are the headlines found on The Nation Online Newspaper for today, Sunday,  15 April, 2018.

The Presidency is not taking kindly to a recent invitation by the House of Representatives to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to appear before an ad hoc committee.

The Ali Isa-led committee wants Osinbajo to appear before it on why six directors of NEMA, who were implicated in a N2.5billion fraud, were suspended.

The Presidency, The Nation gathered last night, considers the invitation an affront to its anti-corruption campaign and a plot to frame up Osinbajo ahead of the 2019 polls.

Sources hinted that Osinbajo may not appear before the House Ad Hoc Committee.

The VP statutorily heads the Governing Board of NEMA which, about a week ago, suspended six directors of the agency following a report from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The affected directors are the Director of Finance and Accounts, Akinbola Hakeem Gbolahan; Ag. Director, Special Duties, Mr. Umesi Emenike;  Director, Risk Reduction, Mallam Alhassan Nuhu; Pilot in-charge Air Ambulance and Aviation Unit, Mr. Mamman Ali Ibrahim; the Chief Maintenance Officer, Mr. Ganiyu Yunusa Deji; and the Director of Welfare, Mr. Kanar Mohammed.

An investigation by The Nation revealed that the Presidency was shocked by the decision of the committee to summon the Vice President over the suspension of the directors.

It suspects that the move could be a smokescreen to frame him up ahead of next year’s polls.

“The Presidency felt slighted by the attitude of the Ad Hoc committee to the Vice President when it is obvious that the suspension of the directors was based on an investigation conducted by the EFCC,” a well placed source said.

“It is more irritating to the government that the suspended employees went to report their employer (the Board of NEMA) to the Ad Hoc Committee of the House.

“The Presidency sees the directors’ action as an attempt to use the House to cover up their tracks. This is a case of corruption fighting back.

“This is the same VP that has been in the vanguard of smothering the fragile relationship between the Executive and the Legislature.

“Ordinarily, the VP enjoys constitutional immunity and if there was no more to the issue, the Ad Hoc Committee should not have summoned Osinbajo.”

The government source said the VP might not appear before the Ad Hoc Committee because a pre-determined agenda is being suspected by the presidency.

“There is a strong suspicion that some forces are hell bent to rubbish the Vice President ahead of 2019 polls,” the source said.

“The VP personally felt slighted from the security reports available to him.”

The EFCC had submitted a March 1, 2018 report on alleged fraud in NEMA to the Vice President.

According to the EFCC, the  investigation bordered on “alleged case of conspiracy, abuse of office, misappropriation and diversion of public funds reported to the office of the Vice-President, Federal Republic of Nigeria against the former Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)  and others forwarded to the commission for discreet investigation.”

Dead or alive? This is one question many Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike will be demanding an answer to in the days and even months ahead as they ponder the fate of the 113 Chibok schoolgirls left in Boko Haram captivity.

The fresh controversy over the missing girls was sparked yesterday, incidentally, the fourth anniversary of their abduction, by a Nigerian journalist with links to the terror sect.

Ahmad Salkida, who had been contacted in the past by government to help in negotiating the release of the girls, said only 15 of them are still alive.

Salkida, in a series of tweets, said his investigations spanning three months showed that many of the girls died from cross fires and bombardments of the security forces that were intended to rescue them.

“I regret to state here that only 15 out of the 113 #Chibokgirls are alive today, based on my investigations in the last three months,” he said.

He said even the 15 have been married off.

The Defence Headquarters, which is co-ordinating a military operation to rescue the girls and subdue Boko Haram said yesterday it did not believe Salkida’s claim.

Brigadier General John Agim, the spokesman for the DHQ said the report was meant to discourage the government from rescuing the girls.

Salkida said abduction was not on the agenda of the Boko Haram insurgents when they set foot on Chibok on that fateful day in 2014.

His words: “Four years ago, a middle ranking BH commander led dozens of fighters in search of food and other supplies in the remote town of Chibok. Like an afterthought, they saw a chance to abduct school girls in GSS Chibok. The girls at the time were preparing for their exams.

“The dozens of BH fighters faced no opposition during the abduction, as they struggled to convey their captives to the forest of Alagarno, the insurgents’ first war capital, which they named Timbuktu. It was in Timbuktu that they organised most of the horror we experience today.

“Some of the girls were lucky to have escaped on their way to Timbuktu that night, because there were fewer fighters to hold more than 200 girls. At the beginning, the group didn’t know what to do with the girls, at least, not in the first one month of their captivity.

“However, what many people did not know was that two weeks into the abduction, the Jonathan administration was already in touch with me for the peaceful release of the girls. By the way, I was in self-exile after pressure from the same government.

Some federal law-makers elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are angry with the leadership of the Senate over its decision to disband a pro-Buhari group as part of the conditions for suspending Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

The APC lawmakers believe that the Senate leadership headed by an APC party member is being unnecessarily harsh on fellow party members who make up the pro-Buhari group, especially in the crucial months leading to the 2019 elections.

The lawmakers, The Nation gathered yesterday, met on Friday to review recent events in the Red Chambers of the National Assembly and could not understand why the Senate leadership seems to be targeting APC members for sanctions.

They reportedly questioned why Senate President Bukola Saraki allowed the suspension of Omo-Agege of the APC to go through despite the intervention of the party’s leadership and other prominent chieftains in the matter.

“It is even more insulting to all of us as APC members to be told that a pro-Buhari group must be disbanded for Omo-Agege to return to the Senate,” a source at the meeting said.

“We are amazed that in an election year, our own party man is allowing the opposition to get the better of our party by suspending our members and calling on us to stop supporting our President openly.

“It is becoming too much and we have resolved to resist it all. The APC caucus in the national assembly is divided over this matter but those of us with Omo-Agege are determined to go all the way.”

The Nation learnt that the legislators have resolved to approach the national leadership of the APC once again to urgently intervene in the matter while they await the return of President Buhari from his current overseas trip.

“The meeting agreed that we should once again formally invite the leadership of the party to intervene while we wait for the President to come back. He is the leader of the party, so we will also report the matter to him as part of the initial formalities.

“We also resolved to approach other party organs like the National Reconciliation Committee headed by our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. We believe it is time to put some things on record because we will resist the continued garrison-like administration of the senate. So, it is important for it to be seen that we exhausted all possibilities before taking drastic actions.”

The Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, yesterday pleaded with the kidnappers of his twin children to release them.

He appealed to them to bear with him as he does not have the N100 million ransom (later reduced to N40m) being demanded.

Oba Balogun said he was able to offer them N5 million which was rejected.

“The kidnappers should please bear with me and return my kids, I am ready to do anything that will make them happy,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“I don’t want to endanger the life of my kids and I am not out to fight them because there is no reason for that,” Balogun said. Gunmen on Thursday, kidnapped the five-year-old twins of Balogun from his Akobo residence in Ibadan.

The mother of the kids was said to have been hospitalised since she received the news of the kidnap with doctors battling to save her life.

The Oyo Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Adekunle Ajisebutu,  said the Oyo State Police Command was doing everything possible to rescue the kidnapped children unhurt and arrest the culprits.

“The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, has consequently directed the command’s anti-kidnapping squad and other special outfits to organise a manhunt for the suspects and rescue the victims safely.

“We assure the parents and the public that we will succeed in this task,” Ajisebutu said.
