More names of Nigerians who allegedly looted the treasury during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration were released yesterday.

In response to the challenge thrown by the PDP to make public the list of “looters”, Minister of Information Lai Mohammed on Friday listed five and how they allegedly dipped their hands in the till.

He listed PDP chairman Uche Secondus, who is threateneing to launch a legal battle to defend his integrity, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, Mr. Olisa Metuh, Mr Waripamo Dudafa and Robert Azibaola as “looters”.

Yesterday, Mohammed listed of 23 names, saying the lists are “not arbitrary”.

The list is made up of three senators, five former ministers, two former governors, three ex-military chiefs, three aides of former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki, a former Customs boss and a former permanent secretary, amon others.

They are: Dasuki, Air Chief Marshal Alex Barde, Gen. Kenneth Minimah, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu, ex-Customs chief Inde Dikko, former FCT minister Bala Mohammed, former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke,   Senator Stella Oduah,  Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Senator Jonah Jang, ex- Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, ex-Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja, , former Minister Bashir Yuguda, Former Minister Nenadi Usman, Former Minister Femi Fani-Kayode, Former Minister Tom Ikimi,  former Permanent Secretary Godknows Igali, former presidential aide Hassan Tukur, former Dasuki aides  Aliyu Usman and Ahmad Idris, former Dasuki associate Aliyu Usman Jawaz and Benedicta Iroha.

The government said “the list of alleged looters which it released earlier was based on verifiable facts, including the amount involved, the date the amount in question was collected and from where it was taken.”

Releasing a fresh list of alleged looters, in a statement issued in Lagos yesterday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also said those complaining that the list was too short apparently did not understand that it was strategically released as a teaser.

‘’At the press conference where the list was released, I did say it was a tip of the iceberg. Apparently, this does not mean anything to people whose style is to comment on issues they barely understand, or just to shoot down anything coming from the government,’’ he said,

adding that the Federal Government has a large number of alleged looters on its list.

Nigeria is on the path of resurrection and progress, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday.

Speaking to reporters after the Easter Service at the Aso Villa Chapel, he said the resurrection of Jesus Christ implied that the country was moving out of its challenges to a greater hope and peace.

He said: ”The resurrection of Jesus Christ is also a strong and powerful message to the nation.

“The message is that our nation is on the path of resurrection, is on the path of progress, is on the path of elevation.

“We are moving out from all our challenges and we are going to a place of greater hope, peace and prosperity and abundance for all of us,” Prof. Osinbajo said.

Aso Villa Chapel Chaplain Pastor Seyi Malomo, who delivered a sermon on: “The temporary  hour of darkness”, said Nigeria would rise again.

He said the resurrection of Christ signified that darkness could only reign but for a while.

“No natter the evil, the problem we are facing, just as Jesus only laid in the grave for three days, all these will be over.

“As long as Jesus rose from the dead, we are going to rise again, even all of you listening to me,” he said.

The cleric urged all Nigerians to emulate Jesus Christ who sacrificed his life for the salvation of mankind.

He said: “In terms of sacrifice, we have to emulate the life of Jesus Christ.

“He sacrificed for mankind. And we are liberated and celebrating because he paid the sacrifice.

“We are all call to do our role in giving that sacrifice that will bring the liberation, the greatness of our nation.”

Various songs were rendered to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

Also yesterday, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara asked Nigerians to show unity, love and sacrifice for the unity and development of the country.

He said in his Easter message: “As we celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary for the redemption of our souls, I urge you all to draw lessons from the selfless service of Christ.

“It is important that such love that Jesus Christ had for mankind to lay down his life for us is what we must show to one another, irrespective of tribe, status or religion.”

THE battle over the appointment of a substantive Chairman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is not yet over between contending forces in government and the National Assembly.

A plot to suspend the anti-graft agency’s acting chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, was being perfected by those opposed to his retention.

But pro-Magu supporters in government are of the opinion that he remains the best for the job.

They said since there are cases in court over whether or not it was necessary for the Senate to confirm Magu, the matters should be allowed to run their full course to the Supreme Court level.

The National Assembly had rejected the nomination of Magu and made his removal as one of its demands for a quicker resolution of the crisis between the two arms of government.

But the Presidency has remained adamant on the choice of Magu for the job in view of his “unique forensics investigations in the last three years”.

According to investigation, some anti-Magu forces met in the past one week on how to resolve the feud between the Executive and the National Assembly, especially on Magu.

The said forces were said to be “looking for an outright solution to Magu imbroglio”.

Most of the bigwigs were also said to be nursing fears that with or without Buhari’s second term in office, Magu can move against them after leaving government.

It was learnt that Magu will be suspended under the guise of any of these cooked up allegations:

*owning phantom houses at home and abroad;

*opening of an account with suspicious lodgments;

*working in cahoots with an Arab as a business partner;

*unyielding position on the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit( NFIU);

*alleged irreconcilable figures on the amount recovered from looters between the Ministry of Finance and the EFCC;

*alleged insubordination; and

* the likelihood of the EFCC operational activities jeopardising the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Since the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, declared that the Presidency was insisting on the choice of Magu, those opposed to the acting chairman of EFCC have also returned to the drawing board.

A former Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and six directors have been indicted in an alleged N2.5billion fraud in the agency.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recommended that the six directors suspected to enable it complete its probe of the agency.

The NEMA board is statutorily chaired by the Vice President. Immediate past Vice President Namadi Sambo chaired the last board of the agency.

Sambo met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, a few days ago. It was not clear at the weekend if the meeting was in connection with the March 1 report of the EFCC on NEMA, which has been sent to the government.

The agency has recommended trial for those found wanting after its probe.

Apart from former DG Sani Sidi Mohammed, the others indicted are Director of Finance and Accounts Akinbola Hakeem Gbolahan; Ag. Director, Special Duties, Mr. Umesi Emenike;  Director, Risk Reduction, Mallam Alhassan Nuhu; Pilot in-charge Air Ambulance and Aviation Unit, Mr. Mamman Ali Ibrahim; the Chief Maintenance Officer Mr. Ganiyu Yunusa Deji; and Director of Welfare Mr. Kanar Mohammed.

The NEMA Board, chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, may meet tomorrow to consider EFCC’s preliminary report on the alleged corrupt practices.

The EFCC is said to have presented its preliminary findings to the board in anticipation of its endorsement to enable the agency carry out a comprehensive probe of the alleged looting.

An  EFCC source said the  investigation bordered on “alleged case of conspiracy, abuse of office, misappropriation and diversion of public funds reported to the office of the Vice-President against the former director-general, Sani and others and forwarded to the commission for discreet investigation.”

Some of the alleged sharp practices uncovered by the EFCC are:

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has finally broken his silence on his perceived governorship ambition.

He said he would run for Ekiti State No.1 seat, but would visit the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to declare his ambition from April 14.

Fayemi said the declaration will be made once Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifts ban on campaign.

The minister, who was in office between October 2010 and October 2014, said interest in the race was not debatable, but he won’t flout the law by declaring his intent when INEC was yet to lift ban on campaign.

The ex-governor, who addressed a briefing on his ambition at his Isan-Ekiti country home yesterday, said everything constitutionally, legally and legitimately possible would be done to ensure an APC victory at the poll.

He said: “Do you need a rocket scientist to tell you that I am running? I was very clear that I am a process person, I am not going to jump the gun because there are rules and guidelines for electioneering.

“The body responsible for that has stated the obvious when people can start campaign. The fact that people are  flouting the guidelines is a fault of INEC and the electoral body is not taking them up on it.

“That is my own attitude to it and at the appropriate time, I will tell my party because this is purely a party matter, it is not a public matter yet.

“So, I don’t really understand the level of curiosity whether I am running or I am not running. I am very clear that what we have in this state today is not what this state deserves.

“I have always been very clear that whatever it takes constitutionally, legally and legitimately to put our party in office in October, we will do as a party.

“I have also gone ahead to say this meeting (held on Saturday) is our usual gathering; it is not a place to declare the intention to run, but as to whether I am running or not, I am running.

“That is not debatable but I am a process person, I am not going to flout the law. You will know, you will all be invited when I decide to formally declare within the ambit of the guideline issued by INEC.”

Fayemi earlier hosted party leaders from the ward to state levels to a quarterly meeting on Saturday, but did not publicly declare intent to run for governor at the gathering.

Should President Muhammadu contest in 2019, he will defeat the former leaders who are asking him not to seek reelection, presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said yesterday.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) have advised the President not to seek reelection.

Obasanjo has launched the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), which he described as a third force to the two dominant parties – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Although the President has not declared his intention to contest, but the popular thinking is that he will.

Shenu, fielding questions from reporters yesterday, said the President “richly deserves a second term in office.”

He added that rather than asking Buhari not to contest in 2019, the former leaders should contest against him next year.

“My response to them is that if they like they can come and contest against President Buhari. He will defeat them, all of them,” Shehu said

On the belief by some Nigerians that President Buhari should not be talking of re contesting when there is hunger in the land, he said: “With all the noise the PDP is making, even during their tenure, did they give breakfast, lunch and dinner to every citizen? Is there any country in which someone does not go hungry?

“I am not saying it is perfectly in order but they are just politicising these issues. This is a government that has removed this country from the shame of food importation.

Every state of the country now is into rice production, and we are feeding not only Nigeria but West Africa.

“And the government is working on having respectable prices for food items,food inflation is coming down grossly. Everyone complaining of hunger should go and work. And you know that this is the only government that has introduced social investment schemes.  We pay out now for the poorest of the poor; the least they wll get is N5,000.and a lot of these jobs that are being created are from loans with little or no interest from the Central Bank, Bank of industry, Banks of Agriculture, Development Bank  and the rest.

“So, there is a lot going for people who really want to go out there to work, especially in agriculture.”

Shehu also faulted those saying it was a weakness for the President not to be able reshuffle his cabinet since 2015.

He said: “The President is the one who wears the shoes; he knows where it pinches. If the President hasn’t sacked his ministers, it means that he wants to continue to work with them.
