Advocates of extended tenure for All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman John Odigie-Oyegun and others have lost their battle.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s insistence on due process and the failure to get more governors into the pro-extension plot forced its few supporters to back down, it was learnt yesterday.

At a meeting with President Buhari at the Villa, some of the governors, including Plateau State’s Simon Lalong, who was appointed by Oyegun to head the technical committee on the matter, were making a case for tenure extension. But the President reportedly insisted that there would be no room for illegality.

The governors met on Tuesday night and agreed to back the President’s position, leading to the collapse of the Lalong technical panel. It had to hurriedly wind up with a report in favour of an elective convention in June.

The governors sent a five-man delegation to the Villa yesterday to convey their new position to the President. They also went to the party’s secretariat to meet with the National Working Committee (NWC).

The governors nominated Jigawa State Governor Abubakar Badaru as the Convention Committee chairman with a promise to send recommended names of members.

A source at the meeting of the governors with the NWC members, said: “The governors met with Oyegun and other members to convey their decisions after Tuesdaynight session and yesterday’s audience with the President at the Villa.

“Bothe Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdul-Aziz Yari and the Chairman of the APC Governors Forum, Rochas Okorocha, addressed the NWC on behalf of their colleagues. They said they had agreed to abide by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the APC. They asked Oyegun to accept their recommendations.

“They also said in line with their agreement, they have appointed Governor Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State as the chairman of the National Convention Committee. They submitted a list of other members of the committee.

“But the NWC told the governors that it is its prerogative to constitute the convention committee and make recommendation to the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Three persons were  killed and six injured yesterday  in an accident at Ilasamaja Bus Stop on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

A worker of Makasa Sun Nigeria Limited, a civil engineering construction firm,  identified as Odejayi Adebola, and a  Ladipo Auto Spare Parts Market trader were among the dead.

The accident occurred when the open-box bed of an empty truck marked MEK 695 XA hit a concrete signpost, which fell on a commercial Coaster bus coming behind it. The vehicles were heading for  Oshodi from Mile 2.

The bus was loading passengers at the bus stop. The conductors’s legs were broken, but the driver was uninjured.

The truck was said to be  speeding when the accident happened around 8a.m. The  driver has been arrested. He was said to have been cautioned after Cele Bus stop to bring down the truck’s crane, but he refused.

It was a moving scene, with many of the  passengers either dead or writhing in pains. Some broke their limbs; one of them was said to have broken his spinal cord.

One of the dead was said to have called his office to inform them of the accident before he died.

Sympathisers claimed that help did not come on time for the victims.

Traffic was at a stand still for about three hours after the crash because of the crowd that thronged the scene. The police, officials of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos Neighbourhood Corps (LNC) and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), among others, were at the scene.

Ilasamaja Police Station operatives took the truck away.

An official of LNC was injured in the forehead while trying to disperse the crowd to facilitate rescue work.

LASAMBUS officials gave the injured first aid, including drip and oxygen for those in critical condition.

The Nation led a LASAMBUS vehicle with two injured victims to Mushin General Hospital at Oliyide Street, but some medical workers rejected them.

“We do not have the specialists to handle these people. One had a fracture; another had a spinal cord injury. I advised that you take them to Igbobi (National Orthopaedic Hospital) because LUTH (Lagos University Teaching Hospital) will demand for money before commencing treatment’’.

The LASAMBUS officials then took them to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) at Ikeja.

An eye witness, Mrs Bolanle Mobolomope, a trader in  told The Nation that many people were critically injured.

“I was here in my shop when the accident happened. I saw the truck with the open-box bed up, coming on a high speed, it hit the overhead sign post, which fell on the Coaster bus. When I saw people lying dead on the road, I saw people with broken legs, head and hands; I could not withstand it, I just ran to the back side of my shop and I was crying.”

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has predicted a fragile economic growth for 2018.

To achieve this fragile but promising growth, the Committee urged “the government to initiate strong stabilisation programmes and  freeze the growth in its aggregate expenditure and Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) distributions to create savings needed to stabilise the economy against future oil price related shocks.”

The Monetary Policy Committee “observed increasing monetisation of oil proceeds as evident in the growing FAAC distribution, relative to the 2017 level of disbursements.”

Speaking to reporters at the end of the first MPC meeting in the year following last week’s clearance of nominees, CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele said “forecasts of key macroeconomic indicators give a positive outlook for the Nigerian economy in 2018”.

He said this “is predicated on the quick passage and effective implementation of the 2018 budget, improved security, foreign exchange market stability as well as favourable crude oil prices.”

However on the downside, Emefiele said the Committee “noted the potential impact of the 2019 election- related spending, against the weak backdrop of tax revenue efforts, herdsmen related violence and rising yields in the advanced economies”. “Indications in the US and the UK point to higher interest rates in the short to medium term.”

The Committee was satisfied with “the gradual return to macroeconomic stability as reflected in the third consecutive quarterly growth in real GDP in the fourth quarter of 2017. It also noted the continued moderation in all measures of inflation as well as sustained stability in the naira exchange rate and urged the CBN to sustain the stability to avoid a mission drift”.

Overall, the MPC noted that the recovery of the economy was strengthening, in view of the return to growth of the Services Sector.

Emefiele praised the fiscal sector for continuing to settle its outstanding liabilities, reducing its domestic debt profile, thus increasing the liquidity of the banking system.

The Committee noted that at 14 per cent, the policy rate was tight enough to rein in inflationary pressures. The Committee, therefore, reaffirmed its commitment to price stability conducive to sustainable and inclusive growth.

Members of the MPC were happy about what they described as the “relatively strong balance sheets of the deposit money banks and the stable outlook. This is in spite of the concentration of non-performing loans in a few sectors, which the Committee observed was satisfactorily being addressed by adequate mechanisms established by the CBN to address the phenomenon”.

The MPC also noted that as the government paid off its huge contractor debts, a sizeable portion of these non-performing loans would be addressed. The Committee “urged the CBN to strengthen its supervisory oversight and early warning systems to promptly identify, monitor compliance with extant prudential regulations, sustain macro-prudential policy and manage emerging vulnerabilities in the banking system”.
