Opponents of tenure elongation have carried the day in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, last night bowed to pressure from governors and party leaders to forego tenure extension.

He has summoned an emergency meeting of the National Working  Committee (NWC) for 8am  today to draw the timetable for state congresses and National Convention.

The meeting will hold before the National Executive Committee (NEC) session begins at 11am.

A member of the NWC said: “We were all shocked to get a text message inviting us for  NWC meeting by 8am on Monday when all we were preparing for was the NEC session.

“Some of us inquired and we were told that the NWC meeting will draw the timetable for state congresses and the National Convention for consideration by NEC. This was what we told him to do last Thursday.

“We suspect that the latest development must have accounted for Oyegun’s U-turn. From the horse-trading so far, all the APC governors have backed out of tenure extension for Oyegun and the NWC.

“We learnt the last governor to ditch him yesterday was Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State.”

Another NWC member said: “I think summoning NWC meeting very early in the morning before NEC amounted to panic on the part of the national chairman.

“Some of us were really amazed when we got the text message. This was the same Oyegun who did not allow us access to the report of the Governor Simon Lalong Committee which was set up by the NWC.

“We had the whole weekend, he did not call for any meeting. Now, he wants to hold a pre-emptive meeting.

“We will go there and listen to what he has in stock for us.”

There were talks last night that Oyegun might seek to recontest based on some governors’ advice. But, it was not clear if he would heed the advice.

If he does, he would have to jostle for the seat again with former Governors Adams Oshiomhole (Edo) and Clement Ebri (Cross River).

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that pro-Buhari governors reached out to NEC members to accept his proposal for elective congresses and National Convention.

As at Friday, no fewer than 21 governors and their state chairmen had conceded that the party should conduct fresh election into party offices in order to avoid running into legal technicality on the nomination of APC candidates for the 2019 polls.

THE Federal Government has assured the citizens that those behind Thursday’s armed robbery attack and killings in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State will be arrested and prosecuted.

Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed gave the assurance yesterday when he visited the Kwara State Governor Abdulfathah Ahmed at the Government House, Ilorin.

This came as the Inspector General (IG) Ibrahim Idris directed state commands across the country to be on red alert.

The directive was sequel to the attacks in Offa as well as the killings at Donga and Bali Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Taraba State.

Mohammed said the entire nation was “shocked and grieved” by the dastardly acts during which 17 persons, including nine policemen, were killed.

The minister later visited Offa to commiserate with Olofa of Offa Oba Muftau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II and his people over the unfortunate incident.

He also visited the headquarters of the state police command in Ilorin to commiserate with the Police Commissioner, Lawan Ado, over the death of the nine policemen.

He was also at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital  (UITH), where he sympathised with the victims of the armed robbery attacks, who were on admission.

The minister said the state and the public must learn  from “the mistakes” from the incident with a view  to improving on the country’s security architecture.

“What happened in Offa on Thursday shocked the entire nation and is our prayers that the souls of all the victims will rest in peace and also that those badly injured would be heeled and recover very soon.

“I want to take this opportunity to also let you know that the entire country is grieving and the entire country is sympathising with Kwara State and  the entire people of Offa.

“But there is also a silver light, despite the losses of the police, it is quite heart-warming to know that some of the suspects have been arrested.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday claimed to have uncovered a plot by the Federal Government to plant illegal items on him outside the country.

The plan, he alleged, is to implicate him so that he would be quizzed by foreign security agencies.

This, the governor claimed, was what was done to former Bayelsa State Governor Diepriye Alamieyeseigha in 2005.

But Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu said the government would not react to the allegation.

Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the claim.

A statement by  Wike’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu,  said the governor’s investigations revealed that the government was using security agencies for the plot.

The statement quoted Wike as saying: “My investigation reveals that the Federal government is planning to use her security agencies to set me up anytime I am travelling outside the country. They plan to organise security to storm the hotel I am staying and say they found xyz cash in my possession; after which they would say I was arrested for currency trafficking or whatever offences outside the country.

“They will then precipitate crisis in my state and other parts of Nigeria. They will plan demonstrations to demonise me and claim I have gone outside to embarrass the country. The public odium is meant to smear me before my people and other Nigerians. It is unfortunate, wicked and unfair.

“What they plan is similar to what was once done to the late Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha. They are planning what they call the ‘Alams treatment’ for me. But, by the grace of Almighty God, they will fail.

Wike said he chose to alert the public to the evil and dangerous dimension politics had degenerated in the country.

“I am using this opportunity to alert the world of the sinister plot. I am a law-abiding citizen of this country and countries I visit in the course of my work or holidays. I have never dabbled into anything illegal. So, any attempt to frame me up on trumped up charges or alleged offences is bound to fail.

“What they are doing is just cheap politics. They want to intimidate the opposition into silence as they are already doing with their so-called ‘looters’ list’. It won’t work. We can’t all be intimidated. What we expect government at the centre to do is to showcase to the people their lists of achievements; why they should get a second chance. But they have nothing to show; so they are embarking on intimidation and arm-twisting tactics of the opposition.”

Wike said he was sure of victory in the 2019 polls because he has been serving the people diligently and efficiently.

Nigeria is seriously distressed. Not only has it failed to serve as a melting pot for ethnic, religious and primordial cleavages, the Nigerian state has over the years, tended to reinforce these fault lines. Thus, we can only talk of the Nigerian nation in a very loose sense of the term. Its strict application which will entail the wielding together of the disparate entities and imbuing in them a common sense of belonging and national identity remains largely illusory. For this, we have had to co

Nigeria consumes an estimated 1.7 million tonnes of milk yearly, but produces only 34 per cent to meet demand. The over 1 million tonnes deficit is imported, and this costs $480.3 million (N173.3 billion). Although a private sector-led initiative, through backward integration, to raise the level of local milk production and create jobs is on-going, the consensus is that Nigeria must learn from global dairy giants which owe their growth to government support and a conducive environment. While presenting my memorandum on the speed limit device at the House of Representatives about two years ago, I stated that the device could not be the main antidote to road crashes.Over speeding is relative. For example, the maximum speed stipulated for private cars is 100 km per hour. It should, however, be noted that there are instances when 60km per hour constitutes excessive or unsafe speed. When a driver is driving in a built up area, his or her speed should not exceed 25 km per hour. The
