The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Tuesday, told the Internally Displaced Persons, who were displaced due to Fulani herdsmen attacks,  to go back home and use stones to defend themselves.

This, he said, was because he was tired of keeping IDPs in Camps.

Ortom explained that killings in the state had become one too many to such an extent that people were running from their homes.

The governor said this during his visit to  the displaced persons who were forced to flee their homes after armed herdsmen attacked Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

Ortom stated that the killings were becoming uncontrollable and charged them to embrace self-defence.

He said, “David in the Bible used ordinary stone to defeat his enemy, it is now time for you to stay at home and use the stone in your homes to defend yourself instead of running away.

“I believe in the rule of law, equity and fairness, but I cannot continue to keep IDPs and l can’t afford to have another IDPs in Gwer West. This must stop. We must stop truncating the future of our younger generation.

“When we allow laws to be violated and nobody takes action, it then allows for impunity and when you give room to impunity, it will result to anarchy which will in turn breed a lawless society.

“Therefore, we the citizens must rise up to support the security agencies by way of providing lawful and necessary logistics such as information, equipment and financial support to back up their operations.

“Just yesterday (Monday), a soldier was killed in Guma, security agents are not spared. Security challenges are enormous. The gruesome murder of 24 people by Fulani herdsmen is quite condemnable.

“Time has come if you are willing to live in Benue State, you must be ready and willing to be law abiding.”

The governor said that  the state government was working with traditional rulers and  other necessary organs of government to strengthen the vigilante  team so as to give it full legal backing that would enable the group to assist the security personnel in curbing criminal activities in the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Council, Francis Iyanga, had disclosed that more than 22 persons were killed while seven others were injured during the attack on the communities.

The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress has written a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission on its plans to hold congresses and convention across the country.

Investigations by one of our correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday showed that the letter was written to the commission on Monday.

A member of the National Working Committee of the party, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said the letter was sent to the electoral body immediately after the party’s National Executive Committee meeting, which was also attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), and governors elected on the platform of the party.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the party decided to hold the convention before May 16, 2018, because of the Ramadan.

He said, “We have sent a letter to INEC concerning the congresses and the convention we are planning to hold.

“While I will not disclose the proposed dates of the events because we want the commission to acknowledge our letter, but I can confidently tell you that we are determined to hold it before May 16.

“We have checked the Islamic calendar and it showed that the Ramadan might start on that date.

“Due to stress associated with congresses and conventions, we don’t want our members to have difficulties attending or playing their roles in the events.”

Also, the party said only the National Working Committee, led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, that was constitutionally empowered to select members of the convention committee of the party.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this on Tuesday in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, while responding to insinuations that there was power tussle between Odigie-Oyegun and a national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, over the selection of members of the APC convention committee.

Abdullahi said he was not aware of any power tussle between the two leaders, adding that the party’s constitution was clear on who was empowered to constitute the committee.

He noted that the dates for the APC congresses would be fixed before the end of the week.

Abdullahi said, “The National Working Committee will fix the dates for the congresses as quickly as possible because we now have the mandate of NEC to proceed.

The Federal Government on Tuesday confirmed the repatriation of the sum of $322.5m to Nigeria by the Swiss Government as part of funds looted by the late former military Head of State, Gen. Sanni Abacha.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, confirmed the release of the fund in a statement issued by her Media Adviser, Oluyinka Akintunde.

The minister said the money was paid to the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria on December 18, 2017.

Adeosun also denied blocking the payment of $16.9m fees to two lawyers, being payment for the recovery of the looted funds by the late head of state.

Media reports (not in The PUNCH) had alleged that the finance minister wrote a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari blocking the payment of the amount to the lawyers.

But Adeosun stated that there was no time she wrote any letter to the President or any member of the Federal Executive Council on the payment of the lawyers for the Abacha loot recovery.

The statement read in part, “The attention of the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, has been drawn to false media reports of a ‘strongly-worded letter to the President’ objecting to the payment of $16.9m fees to two lawyers for the recovery of Abacha funds.

“The minister wishes to dissociate herself and the Federal Ministry of Finance from recent malicious and misleading media reports on the Abacha refunds.

“The minister had at no time written any letter to the President or any member of the Federal Executive Council on the payment of lawyers for the Abacha recovery.

“She also refuted the flawed media reports of controversy surrounding the Abacha recovery, disclosing that the sum of $322,515,931.83 was received into a special account in the Central Bank of Nigeria on December 18, 2017 from the Swiss Government.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there is no controversy concerning the recovery of the Abacha monies from the Swiss Government.”

FEC had on November 1, 2017 approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Nigeria and Switzerland for the repatriation of $321m stolen funds to the country.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), had told State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari that he had been mandated to execute the agreement that would lead to the repatriation of the funds.

He had explained, “There exists a forum, that is Global Assets Recovery Forum, taking place in December in the US, and we are looking towards that. We are in agreement substantially with the Swiss Government for the recovery of additional sum of $321m.

“That Memorandum of Understanding has been substantially agreed between Nigeria and Switzerland. We intend to now execute or to sign off the agreement during the global forum on assets recovery coming up December.

“The intention of the memo is to seek the approval of the council to allow the attorney-general to sign the agreement on behalf of the government of the federation of Nigeria. Two, is to develop an instrument of ratification, which will now give the attorney general the powers to ensure the repatriation of the funds.”

Malami added, “It is collectively agreed upon between Nigeria and Switzerland that we on our part should seek the approval of the council to ratify the MoU as agreed; and they on their own part, procure the instrument of ratification that will now give the respective officers of the two countries the powers and effect to now sign off the agreement.

The police in Bauchi State have recovered a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition from bandits and other suspects across the state.

Addressing journalists at the police headquarters in Bauchi on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Kamal Datti, disclosed that the recovery of the illegal arms followed the 21-day ultimatum given by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, in February.

According to him, the order, which was extended to April 30, 2018, directed individuals and groups in possession of prohibited and illegal firearms to surrender them to the commissioners of police in their states.

He said commissioners of police were also  directed to set up a Joint Task Enforcement Team to mop up, seize and recover all illegal arms in wrong hands.

“In compliance with the IGP directives, the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sanusi Lemu, inaugurated the Police Joint Task Enforcement Team to that effect.

“Consequently, the command has so far successfully recovered a total of 83 prohibited/illegal firearms and 702 live ammunition from suspected criminals and persons that voluntarily surrendered their firearms to the command,” he said.

He listed the recovered weapons to include 30 AK47 rifles, one AK49 rifle, five single-barrelled guns, 20 fabricated guns and two double-barrelled guns.

Other arms recovered included four pump-action guns, one K2 rifle, 20 pistols, 702 rounds of live ammunition and 70 cartridges.

“On sighting the team, the suspects engaged them in a fierce shoot-out which lasted for some minutes. As a result, the three suspected armed robbers sustained fatal injuries and were taken to the General Hospital, Misau where medical doctors certified them dead,” he said.

According to him, three AK47 rifles, one locally-fabricated double-barrelled gun, 210 live ammunition of 7.62mm calibre, six cartridges and six empty AK47 riffle magazines were recovered from the suspects.
