As controversy continues to trail the release of looters’ list by the Federal Government in the last one week, there are strong indications that government is compiling fresh names of people alleged to have looted the nation’s treasury.

Our correspondents learnt that the fresh list might contain names of those who have yet to be arraigned in courts for corruption.

The list may also include names of former governors, ministers and even bankers.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had in the past said 55 persons stole N1.34tn under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Last week, he released 29 names, who he said took money from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sabo Dasuki (retd.).

Many of the names he released were, however, those already undergoing trial for alleged corruption while the names of members of the former ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party, who had defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress were conspicuously omitted from the list.

The two lists contained names of those in the main opposition party, the PDP. The PDP had subsequently criticised the government, accusing it of being biased and diverting attention from its alleged incompetence.

But a source close to the Presidency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told one of our correspondents in Abuja on Friday, that the government, through the Ministry of Information and Culture, would soon release another list.

He said that the next batch would be more comprehensive and would contain the names of those who either took money from the office of the former NSA or directly from the Federal Government before the 2015 elections.

He said the government was aware of the controversy that surrounded the release of the first two lists, adding that the names of some persons considered to be close to the government could be in the third list.

The source said, “Between you and me, I can authoritatively tell you that we are compiling a fresh list. We won’t release it until we are satisfied with it. We want to be thorough. People will be shocked when we release the fresh names.

“Those who accused us of being biased will know that we know what we are doing. The first list was a fraction. When the second one came out, people were surprised. As for the next one, people will be shocked. I won’t say more than that.”

Efforts made to reach Mohammed on the issue were unsuccessful as calls made to his mobile phone indicated that it was switched off.

The number of persons that lost their lives to the bank robbery in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Thursday may have risen to 30, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

This was a sharp increase in the 12, comprising six policemen and six civilians, that was reported on Friday.

Several eyewitnesses who spoke with one of our correspondents said body count at the scene of the incident indicated that those who lost their lives were about 30.

One of them said, “I personally counted up to 30 dead bodies and I am sure the figure might increase because a lot of people were critically injured by gunshots.”

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawan Ado, said on Friday that nine policemen and seven civilians were killed by the armed robbers that stormed five banks in Offa.

Sources told one of our correspondents that the operation lasted for over one hour. It was also learnt that the armed robbers, who were about 30, blew up the entrances to the banks with dynamite and reportedly carted away millions of naira.

They had shot aimlessly and killed many people during the operation.

But speaking through the command’s spokesperson, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Friday, the commissioner said the police had commenced investigation into the robbery and that six vehicles used by the robbers for the operation had been recovered.

Ado said, “Nine police personnel and seven civilians were killed during the robbery operations,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has pledged that the state government would pay the medical bills of the victims of the accident.

The All Progressives Congress Technical Committee, set up to advise the National Executive Committee of the party on the contentious tenure elongation, submitted its report on Friday in Abuja.

The committee was set up on Tuesday.

Our correspondent gathered that the committee asked that the tenure of the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee should not be extended.

The committee, it was also learnt, insisted that the party must hold a national convention, where new officers would be elected.

The report of the committee, according to highly-placed sources, said that it would be illegal to extend the tenure of the executives and, therefore, recommended that there should be congresses and national convention.

It was gathered that the APC governors’ support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision that congresses be held influenced the recommendation contained in the committee’s report.

The Chairman of the committee, who is also the Governor of Plateau State, Mr. Simon Lalong, told Odigie-Oyegun while submitting his committee’s report that if the report “is followed religiously, the issue of the leadership logjam in the ruling party will be a thing of the past.”

Lalong said, “The task appeared not easy when it was given to us, but with God on our side and the very wide consultations we made, this report has solved most of the problems that we were thinking were within the APC. So, that is to tell you that there is democracy in the APC.

“We looked at the meeting of February 27; we also looked at the passion and commitment of Mr. President towards keeping the party as one and so at the end of the day, we made far-reaching recommendations.

“We noticed that there were different interests, which is quite usual when you have a party like this that is progressive. Those interests were genuine, but at the end of the day, we were able to marry them so that the party can move forward. So, in this report, you will see a lot of it.

The Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, Edward Onoja, his wife and child escaped death after surviving an accident along the Abuja/Lokoja Expressway on Thursday, according to the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Kogi State chapter, Alhaji Taufiq Isa.

Isa said this at a prayer session organised on Friday for the quick recovery of the state governor, Yahaya Bello, who had sprained one of his legs recently.

Therefore, prayers were extended to the CoS and his family.

The incident occurred barely a week after Bello was involved in an accident, spraining his left leg in the process.

It was learnt that the accident occurred around 5 pm when the CoS and his family were returning from Abuja.

It was further learnt that Onoja’s Sports Utility Vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the bush, leaving him and his wife unconscious while their baby was unhurt.

Motorists passing by had to stop to assist the victims from the wrecked vehicle as the SUV was said to have somersaulted several times, it was learnt.

A source at the Government House said members of the Federal Road Safety Corps were quickly called to the scene to rescue the victims of the accident.

The source said the victims were later rushed to a private hospital in Abuja.

When contacted, the Sector Commander, FRSC, Kogi State Command, Mr. Segun Martins, said the incident didn’t occur within his area of jurisdiction.

The prayer was led by the Chief Imam of Odokoro-Gbede, Sheikh Shaidu Arikeuyo, after Friday’s Jumaat prayer.

A 54-year-old father of seven, Mr. Mathias Odey, whose left hand was allegedly cut off by a herdsman during a clash on November 5, 2017 has said that he had remained without help from anywhere.

Odey was injured during a clash between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Ugaga community of Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Southern City News learnt on Friday that the farmer was attacked by a herdsman in his farm when he was harvesting farm produce with his children.

He recalled the incident, “My children and I were plucking pepper from one of my farms. We usually do this together. After I finished with the pepper, I went to another section to harvest yam.

“I had barely harvested four tubers of yam when we saw some Fulani herdsmen entering our farm. Three of the herdsmen were with their cows, scattering the ridges. My son attempted to chase them, but one of the herdsmen brought out a cutlass and went after him.

“He hit my son twice but didn’t injure him. I went after him and suddenly, he turned towards me and tried to cut off my neck with the cutlass. I used my hand to defend myself and that was when it was chopped off.”

He said that he fell on the ground and called his children to help him, adding that in the process, he became unconscious and woke up in the hospital.

Odey said he had been depending on goodwill from friends to address his medical condition.

He said that he had spent the last four months visiting hospitals in Calabar and Ogoja for medical attention.

“When this incident happened, there were promises that the government would take care of my hospital bills and see to it that I get treated, but nothing of such has happened.
