NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS: TODAY'S THE TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER HEADLINES [7TH APRIL, 2018]

Below are the headlines found on The Tribune Online Newspaper for today, Saturday 7th April, 2017.

MRS Omilola Korede with her son went to one of the new generation banks in Offa, Kwara State, on Thursday, to lodge a complaint over a transaction. She did not know that death was waiting for her in that bank. Both mother and son were shot by armed robbers who invaded the town that day.

Mrs Korede was identified among the dead just as the number of persons killed in the robbery attack has increased to 22.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed that nine policemen were killed in the attack along with seven civilians. However, residents and eyewitnesses insisted that the casualty figure had risen to 22.

Residents who gave this figure described the robbery attack as the deadliest in the history of the town. The town has come under armed robbery attacks three times in the last five years.

Scores of other victims who sustained gunshot wounds in the incident are being treated in different hospitals across the state.

Some were taken to the General Hospital in Ilorin, the state capital, where the state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed visited them and pledged to foot their bills.

The bandits raided some commercial banks in the town, killing policemen and civilians. They carted away an undisclosed amount of cash after operating for over an hour.

However, the death toll, which stood at 15 on Thursday, may have risen to 22, according to residents of the town who could not speak on the situation of several other victims that have been taken out of the town for treatment.

Saturday Tribune gathered that one of the victims of the incident was a pregnant trader identified as Mrs Korede, who had gone to lodge a complaint over a transaction in one of the banks.

She reportedly went with her son and when the robbers came, they killed both of them.

Three other women who lost their lives to the attack have also been identified as Bunmi Mesan, Iya Muji and another one popularly called Mama the Big Club.

A survivor, who said he hid somewhere inside one of the banks during the attack, was still in shock when he briefly shared his ordeal.

“My brother, it is not something to witness; it is better imagined. I don’t even pray it happens to my enemies. It was a terrible moment, death staring you in the face. I still can’t talk much about it,” he said.

Afenifere condemns FG’s silence

Pan-Yoruba organisation, Afenifere, in its reaction, expressed shock and sorrow at the killings and added that it was disappointed at the lack of any reaction on it from the Federal Government.

“The mass murder in Offa is so chilling and galling. It makes us to cringe and we mourn this disaster.

“But we are miffed that more than 24 hours after the tragic mass murder, the Federal Government has remained silent. This is unlike its responses to disasters in other places. Why? Is it because it is Offa?

“We are bothered that human life has become this cheap and without any defence or care. Our heart goes to the families and loved ones of those murdered. We pray that the dead will rest in peace,” Afenifere said.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has declared that the recommendations of the Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State-led 10-man Technical Committee would lay to rest the ghost that has been hovering over the leadership of the APC.

Oyegun made the declaration on Friday in Abuja when Governor Lalong submitted the report of his committee to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

The committee was inaugurated on Tuesday by Chief Oyegun.

It was mandated to examine the observations of President Muhammadu Buhari at the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held last month and make far-reaching recommendations.

President Buhari, at the meeting, frowned at the February resolution of the organ of the party which granted a year tenure elongation to the NEC and the state chapters.

Submitting his committee’s report, Lalong said he was hopeful that the recommendations, if implemented, would go a long way in resolving the seeming intractable crises confronting the ruling party.

He revealed that his committee got pressured by the contending camps within the party.

“We concluded this report yesterday (Thursday). This report was accepted by all our committee members, including those that have travelled back to their destinations. We did our best within a short time to ensure that we get the report ready within the accepted time so that this party can move forward.

“The task appeared not easy when it was given to us but with God on our side and the very wide consultations we made, this report has solved most of the problems that we were thinking were within the APC. So, that is to tell you that there is democracy in the APC.

THE 13 Local Government Areas of Nasararwa state shared N1.2 billion for the payment of staff salaries for March, Mr Haruna Osegba, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has said.

Osegba disclosed this on Friday shortly after the state’s Local Government Joint Account Committee and stakeholders’ meeting in Lafia.

He explained that there was the shortfall of N89 million in the allocation of the LGAs from the federal allocation for March.

The commissioner said, “Only N1. 2 billion was left for salaries after the statutory deductions, which include salaries of traditional rulers.”

He said local government staff would get between 65 and 85 per cent of their salaries for March, depending on the staff strength of their respective council.

“Based on this, the least any worker at the local government level will receive, as to March salary, 65 per cent while the maximum is 85 per cent of salary”.

He, however, assured all workers that the state government would block leakages and boost sources of internally generated revenue in order to augment the allocation from the federation account.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that percentage payment of salaries to the staff of local government areas in the state began in October 2015, a development government attributed to the paucity of funds and economic recession.
