There was mild drama, yesterday, at 8th fidau prayers for late Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Buba Jubril, in Lokoja, Kogi State, as operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, failed to arrest the senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, who was at the event.

The Police had a few days ago, declared the senator wanted over his implication in handing over illegal weapons to some kidnappers who claimed to be his thugs.

The SARS’ operatives had stormed Kabawa Primary School, Lokoja, venue of the fidau prayers, in efforts to arrest Senator Melaye but were awe-struck as local vigilante men encircled him and made it impossible for the SARS operatives to get close to him.

Melaye actually stole the show on the occasion, raising his two fingers to acknowledge cheers from the crowd who greeted him with loud ovation.

Dino, after the prayer session was escorted into  the waiting vehicle of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, by the local vigilantes who formed a ring round him.

The SARS’ operatives, who later besieged Chief Rasaq Kutepa’s House at the GRA, where the reception took place, were disappointed to see Melaye in the convoy of the Senate President leave for the late Buba’s House from where they left for Obajana airstrip for a flight to Kastina.

Earlier at the fidau prayer session,  Leader of the House of Representative, Femi Gbajabiamila, had said the death of Buba Jubril still left him in tears.

Determined to save his seat, Senator Dino Melaye, who represents Kogi West Senatorial District, yesterday, prayed the Supreme Court to stop Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from going ahead with the process for his recall.

The embattled lawmaker, through his lead counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, raised seven grounds of appeal he urged the apex court to consider and abort plans to recall him from the Senate.

He applied for an order of perpetual injunction restraining INEC, whether by itself, staff, employees, agents, servants and or privies, howsoever, called, from commencing or further continuing with the process of acting on the purported petition presented to it by his constituents.
Melaye further filed a motion for an order staying the execution of the March 16 judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that gave INEC the nod to resume process for his recall.

He begged the court to order parties to maintain the status quo that existed before the judgement was delivered in the appeal marked CA/A/299/M/2018, pending the hearing and final determination of the appeal he lodged before the Supreme Court.

According to him, “unless the execution of the judgement is stayed and/or suspended, the appellant’s/applicant’s appeal already filed would be defeated, rendered nugatory and a situation of complete helplessness foisted on the Supreme Court.”

It will be recalled that INEC had sequel to the verdict of the appellate court, published timetable for Melaye’s recall which is scheduled to commence on April 27.

PARTICIPANTS at this year’s third national breakfast meeting convened by authorities of Onitsha Business School (OBS) have decried dwindling national economy and  predicted an acute shortage of food in the near future.

They said their prediction on the acute food shortage was predicated on the activities of armed herdsmen who are invading farm lands in various parts of the country and killing the farmers, thus forcing the farmers out of their farmlands for fear of being slaughtered.

In the forum which had its theme as: “Nigerian Economy Intelligence Estimate: Current Challenges and Prospects,” presented by the lead discussant, Mr. Muda Yusuf who is the Director General of Lagos Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, the participants enumerated a lot of factors capable of bringing the nation’s economy down if not checked.

For instance, Yusuf who was represented by  the chamber’s Director of Research and Advocacy, Dr. Vincent Nwani, stated that with about 60 police check-points/extortion points along Lagos-Asaba Road, numerous customs check-points, multiplicity of taxation and about 63 per cent of farmers refusing to go back to farms because of fear of herdsmen attack,  Nigeria’s economy is already in doldrum.

“Again, with N78 million withdrawn from the national treasury by the telecom sector last year alone for maintenance culture, long bureaucracy for entering into contracts in Nigeria with Federal Government and lack of funds to increase workers’ salaries, there is an obvious indication that the economy would continue to suffer a setback,” he said.

He however encouraged the Onitsha Business School to form part of the solution by creating a platform for SMEs to access credit facilities and at the same time, fashion out ways to sell these loans to the prospective public.
