Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he is ashamed that Nigeria is now being used as a negative example in the international community.
He cited recent instances when the Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, mocked the poor state of security in Nigeria and the naira’s weakening status.

Jonathan spoke at the inauguration of the first bridge built by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Friday night.
The former President lamented that things were so bad in the country that Nigeria had lost its respect in Africa.
He said, “He (Ghanaian President) said Ghana is not like Nigeria where cattle roam the streets. At another occasion in the United Kingdom, he made scathing remarks about Nigeria’s currency.
“I feel ashamed as a former President that the president of a neighbouring country used Nigeria as negative examples.
“If a neighbouring African president will use Nigeria to make negative examples, then we as leaders must know certain things are wrong in the country. That means we as leaders must change the way we do things.”

The former President, therefore, urged Nigerian leaders to show serious concern, noting that many things had gone wrong in the country.
Jonathan also advised President Muhammadu Buhari to resist pressure to rig the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State and subsequent elections in the country.
He praised the people of Ekiti for their support for the Peoples Democratic Party, urging them to support the youthful candidates of the party in the election.
The party has elected 50-year-old Deputy Governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, and 39-year-old Deji Ogunsakin as his running mate.
Jonathan described Fayose as an exemplary leader and loyal party man, who had done the PDP proud in all areas.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

He said, “I don’t believe anybody can defeat the PDP in Ekiti if election is going to be held.”
He said, “I use this opportunity to call on Mr. President because I was there before. When you are there, there is so much pressure on you to use your power to subjugate democracy.

The Presidency on Friday said President Muhammadu Buhari would implement the recommendations of the ruling All Progressives Congress’ Committee on Restructuring once they are approved by the party.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents on Friday.

Shehu said the party had yet to take a final position on the recommendations of the committee headed by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai.
He explained that once a decision had been taken on it, the President, as a loyal party man, would implement it.
The presidential spokesman said, “The report has not been presented to the President yet.
“As far as I know, the report was presented to a meeting of the party’s National Executive Council and members were asked to go and read it and come back to discuss it. The last meeting of NEC (National Executive Committee) did not discuss it because members were engrossed in the issue of the forthcoming national convention.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

“What I can assure you is that once the report is approved by the party, the President, as a loyal party man, will implement it. I am very sure of that.”
Meanwhile, the APC, on its part, said although it remained committed to implementing the el-Rufai-led panel report on true federalism, it could not do so before the 2019 general elections.
The party said it was uncharitable for anyone to suggest that it was using the issue of restructuring to canvass for votes in the forthcoming general elections because it had demonstrated sufficient resolve to fulfilling its promise to Nigerians on the issue.
The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Bolaji  Abdullahi, said this in response to inquiries from Saturday PUNCH, in Abuja, on Friday.

In response to a question on what stage the consideration of the panel report was, he said the party was waiting to receive the report of a committee set up by the party’s caucus to review the document.
He said, “At the last caucus meeting, the National Working Committee presented the el-Rufai Committee report and it was agreed that a committee be set up to look at it because the report is very contentious.

A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; a former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau; and other presidential aspirants interested in contesting in the 2019 election have challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to a debate ahead of the poll if they emerge as their parties’ candidates.
 The other presidential aspirants who have challenged the President to a debate are a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu; a former presidential candidate of the KOWA Party in the 2015 election, Prof. Remi Sonaiya; Publisher, Sahara Reporters, Mr. Omoyele Sowore; Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher; and Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies.

According to the presidential aspirants, if they emerge as their parties’ candidates for the next election, they will engage in any presidential debate they are invited for and would like President Buhari to make himself available for such debates should he also emerge as the candidate of his party, the All Progressives Congress.
Buhari had in 2015 shunned the last round of a presidential debate organised by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group, which was attended by the then President, Goodluck Jonathan (Peoples Democratic Party), Sonaiya (KOWA Party), Martins Onovo (National Conscience Party), Godson Okoye (United Democratic Party) and Chekwas Okorie (United Peoples Party).
But for the next election, Atiku said he would take part in any presidential debate if he emerged as the PDP candidate.
In a message on Twitter, he gave kudos to the Independent National Electoral Commission for recognising debates as a vital part of democratic process, saying “debates are a vital part of the democratic process.
“Our democracy and governance will be better enriched when voters have the opportunity to make the needed distinction in the offerings of those who apply to govern them.”
When asked if he would be ready to face other presidential candidates in a debate, including Buhari, if he emerged as the APC candidate, his media aide, Mr. Paul Ibe, said, “His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, will make himself available for a debate.”
Former Presidential candidate of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, also said it was important for those seeking to occupy the office of President to participate in a debate.
