Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southwest yesterday intervened in the controversial shadow election to pick the party’s candidate for the July 14 Ekiti State governorship election.

Last Saturday’s election was disrupted. After reviewing the report of the Electoral Committee led by Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura, the party leadership yesterday cancelled the Saturday exercise and fixed Friday for a fresh primary.

However, a meeting of Southwest leaders of the party with the aspirants in Abuja is likely to propose direct primary to pick the candidate. The meeting, it was learnt, was at the instance of President Muhammadu Buhari, who was said to have been embarrassed by the the disruption of the shadow poll.

Yesterday’s meeting was attended by party stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba,  former Ekiti State Governor Adeniyi Adebayo and Vice Chairman (SouthWest) Pius Akinyelure. Of the 33 aspirants are in the race, 26 attended the meeting.

At the meeting were Minister of Mines and Steel Development Kayode Fayemi, former Governor Segun Oni, former House of Representatives member Opeyemi Bamidele, presidential adviser Babafemi Ojudu, Senator Ayo Arise and former House of Representatives member Bamidele Faparusi.

After the break, chairman of the primary panel Governor Tanko Al-Makura came in and was part of the second round of the meeting.

The meeting proposed direct primary to be held across the 177 wards for the selection of the stardard bearer.

It was learnt that after debating the proposal, the aspirants at the meeting went into division and majority –  17 aspirants voted for direct primary, which will allow all card- carrying members of the party to participate in picking the candidate at their wards.

Six of the aspirants voted for the delegate system, which was used in the disrupted primary. Three voted for a consensus candidate arrangement.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned that the economy faces inflation and financial stability risks over the short-to medium-term if expected huge election spending is not checked.

CBN Deputy Governor (Corporate Services) Adamu Edward Lamtek explained in his personal statement at the last Monetary Policy  Committee  (MPC)  meeting released yesterday by the CBN that  if excess liquidity was allowed to build up, the demand for foreign exchange could shoot up in the second half of 2018 and throw the naira exchange rate out of equilibrium.

Lamtek said: “Such an adverse scenario must be prevented through a proactive monetary  policy.  This  is  justified  by  the  reality  that  exchange  rate  stability  is critical   to the current recovery in   economic growth and the   gradual disinflation.  Added  to  this  is  that a stable exchange rate  should, in the minimum, prevent further deterioration of  foreign currency denominated assets of the banking system and improve the resilience of the industry”.

He said these  concerns surely  called  for  a  forward-looking  and  cautious  approach  to policy. “I see the need for greater coordination of monetary and fiscal policies and     continued     engagement of critical stakeholders     to     address misinformation and  better anchor expectations,” he said.

“In addition, I reckoned that  some of the supportive  administrative  measures  put  in  place since last year by the Bank need more time to work their way fully through the economy.  I  am  equally  persuaded  by  the  commitment of the Federal Government to the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), especially in the area of infrastructure development, which continues to be relevant to sustaining and deepening  growth and development of  the  country in the medium to long-term,” he said.

He insisted that the outlook  for  domestic liquidity, based  on  expected  fiscal actions  and  election spending, is worrisome and that with an impending  Federal Government budget outlay  of over N8 trillion and deficit  of  about N2 trillion for 2018, the  short-term fiscal outlook appears expansive. “The delay in the passage of the budget could result in substantial injections in the second half of fiscal 2018 in an   attempt to meet planned commitments. The immediate effect of this, combined with the repayment of local debt by the government and election  spending  would be  a  surge  in  banking  system liquidity,” he said.

MINISTER of Communications Adebayo Shittu yesterday accused Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi of being afraid of him (Shittu).

He said Ajimobi was afraid because of going to jail if he succeeds him in office, owing to mismanagement of the state’s resources.

But the governor said it was the minister, who should be afraid because of the allegations against him.

Shittu, who spoke to reporters during his visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) national secretariat in Abuja on the outcome of the party’s ward congresses, said: “I want to say that if anybody is desperate in the Oyo political firmament, it should be Governor Ajimobi, who believes that if Barrister Shittu succeeds him, he will be in jail. That is what he is reported to have always told people who mentioned me to him.

“He thinks that I am too principled, firm, unbendable and uncompromising when it comes to the issues of morality. It is he who is desperate to stop me, not me being desperate to become governor.

“The rules are clearly there and like somebody who believes in the rule as a lawyer and man of law and order, if I follow the rules to contest the primaries in a free, fair and credible poll and did not win, I will take up something else.

“I am not desperate to become the governor of Oyo State. It is the other way round because the governor is desperate to stop me for whatever reason.”

On whether he had taken advantage of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s APC Reconciliation Panel to bring about a solution to the disagreement between him and the governor,  the minister said: “I can say straight away that I am like any other Nigerian that heard that a committee was constituted. No invitation was extended to me for any purpose of discussions, negotiations, reconciliations or whatever. Nobody can blame me for that.”

Shittu said Ajimobi had failed in so many things “including human relations and others I cannot say openly in the media”.

He queried: Why is he afraid of going to jail if another Buhari like me comes to power in Oyo State? Why is he afraid of primaries?”

However, a statement issued by Ajimobi’s Special Adviser, Communication and Strategy, Mr. Bolaji Tunji, quoted him as saying that the minister should be the one to be afraid of going to jail in view of the damaging allegations made against him by all his aides, who resigned en mass following his refusal to pay their emoluments.
