Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the ruling All Progressives Congress is taking Nigerians for fools while “revelling in an unrepentant misgoverning of Nigeria.”

This is coming as the promoter of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement also disclosed that the movement had adopted the African Democratic Congress as a political platform to actualise its dream for a new Nigeria.

Obasanjo said this on Thursday evening while briefing journalists at his presidential library home in Abeokuta.

While lashing out at the ruling party, the former President said most Nigerians today were poorer than when the APC came in adding that the country had been further  impoverished with foreign loan jumping from $3.6bn to over $18bn.

He said, “The APC, as a political party, is still gloating and revelling in its unrepentant misgovernance of Nigeria and taking Nigerians for fools.

“There is neither remorse nor appreciation of what they are doing wrong.  It is all arrant arrogance and insult upon injury for Nigerians.

“Whatever the leadership may personally claim, most Nigerians know that they are poorer today than when the APC came in and Nigeria is more impoverished with our foreign loan jumping from $3.6bn to over $18bn to be paid by the present and future generations of Nigerians.

“The country is more divided than ever before because the leadership is playing the ethnic and religious game which is very unfortunate.”

He added, “And the country is more insecure and unsafe for everybody.  It is a political party with two classes of membership.

The Senate on Thursday made a U-turn on its reason for insisting that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, should appear before the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

The Senate said the IG was invited particularly to address the legislature on the spate of killings across Nigeria and not the prosecution of Senator Dino Melaye.

It insisted that Idris was not fit to hold any public office, saying the police boss was clutching at straws with his excuses for ignoring summons by the lawmakers.

The senators also said that the IG’s refusal to honour their invitations was an indication that Idris was afraid of his own shadow.

These points were contained in a statement issued by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Sabi Aliyu-Abdullahi, in Abuja on Thursday.

The Senate had on Wednesday declared Idris unfit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria, describing him as an enemy of democracy for his alleged refusal to honour the Senate summons thrice.

Idris had been summoned to address the Senate on the alleged inhuman treatment of Melaye during his arrest and detention by the police over alleged gun-running; and the spate of killings by armed herdsmen and militias across the country.

While Idris had sent the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Mr. Joshak Habila, to represent him in the previous times, he sent no representation for his appearance on Wednesday.

The IG had responded through a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, saying he owed the Senate no apologies.

The Peoples Democratic Party has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission to beam their searchlights on the finance of the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The PDP chairman in Osun State, Mr. Soji Adagunodo, made this call at a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday.

The senator representing the Osun East Senatorial District at the Senate, Ademola Adeleke, and many governorship aspirants of the party including a former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade; a former Speaker, Adejare Bello, and Chief  Nathaniel Oke (SAN),  were present at the briefing.

The party said the audited report of the state government which the European Union transparency initiative forced them to release to the public was replete with alleged glaring evidence of financial recklessness.

The PDP chairman said, “For example, the Office of the Governor which is principally made up of the Governor, Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government and the Chief of Staff, expended a sum of N6,367,390,350.64 in one year. This was higher than the entire money spent on education, agriculture and health in the same year.

“Of this figure, the sum of over N5bn and N50m was spent on overheads in the office of the governor. This was an increase of almost 400 per cent on the sum of N1.2bn  spent on the same overheads in 2015.  The question is what could be responsible for this astronomical rise in the overhead cost of running the Office of the Governor within 12 months?  How much of this money was funnelled into private pockets and on political patronage?”
