June 12: Stop showing loyalty to Abacha, Soyinka tells President
Wed, 13 Jun 2018
Twenty-five years after the military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday formally apologised to the family of the deceased who died in custody while struggling to reclaim his mandate.

In turn, the family of the deceased politician also apologised to the President for the wrongs Abiola did to him while he was still alive.

This played out at the Presidential Villa, Abuja where Buhari posthumously conferred the highest national honour of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic on Abiola.

Also, Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka told Buhari to stop showing loyalty to “Abiola’s tormentor.”

At the well-attended ceremony, Buhari also conferred the second highest national honour, Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, on Abiola’s running mate in the election, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe; while he also honoured the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, with the same award posthumously.

Buhari said his decision to revisit the annulled election was not an attempt to open old wounds but to put right what had been done wrongly.

Ex-Plateau gov, Dariye, jailed 14 years for over N2bn fraud
Wed, 13 Jun 2018

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Gudu, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a former Governor of Plateau State and serving senator, Joshua Dariye, to 14 years’ imprisonment on charges of criminal breach of trust and criminal appropriation of the state’s funds running to over N2bn.

Justice Adebukola Banjoko, in a judgment which took her six and a half hours to read on Tuesday, convicted the ex-governor on 15 out the 23 counts preferred against him in July 2007.

The judge, barely a fortnight ago, imposed 14 years’ jail term on ex-Governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, on similar charges.

On Tuesday, she sentenced Dariye to two years’ imprisonment on each of the five counts bordering on criminal misappropriation and 14 years’ jail term on each of the 11 counts of criminal breach of trust.

The judge, however, ruled that all the sentences would run concurrently, implying that the convict would have to spend 14 years in jail.

The punishments imposed on the ex-governor for the two categories of offences of criminal breach of trust and criminal misappropriation are the maximum as provided under sections 315 and 309 of the Penal Code Act, respectively.

In all, the judge convicted him on 15 counts while she threw out eight of the total 23 charges on the grounds of either duplicity of charges or lack of sufficient evidence.

“I can’t imagine such a brazen act. Is it the transfer of as much as about half a billion naira from the state’s Ecological Fund into a personal venture account? Everybody is a victim here,” the judge said.

FG appoints transaction advisers for Afam Power, Yola Disco
Wed, 13 Jun 2018

The National Council on Privatisation has approved the appointment of transaction advisers for the privatisation of Afam Power Plc and the Yola Electricity Distribution Company, investigation has shown.

The two companies, carved out of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, are part of the public enterprises scheduled for sale within the year.

The Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mr. Alex Okoh, had recently stated that the government expected N400bn from the sale of public enterprises, which would be ploughed into funding the 2018 budget.

Our correspondent learnt that towards the sale of the power firms, transaction advisers had been approved by the NCP chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, following the recommendation of the BPE.

[better-ads type=”banner” banner=”37″ campaign=”none” count=”2″ columns=”1″ orderby=”rand” order=”ASC” align=”center” show-caption=”1″][/better-ads]

Authoritative sources confirmed the appointment of the advisers although the identity of the firms could not be ascertained as of the time of going to press. The Head, Public Communications, BPE, Mrs. Amina Othman, did not pick the calls made to her mobile telephone.

With a bid of $260.05m, Taleveras had on July 31, 2013 beaten TES Power to emerge the preferred bidder for Afam Power Plc during the first attempt to sell the firm.

The Taleveras consortium was made up of Alstom Nigeria Limited, an indigenous company involved in the supply, operation and maintenance of power turbines; the Alstom Group, a French company involved in power generation and transport, and Taleveras Petroleum Trading BV, a British West Indies company engaged in physical trading of crude oil and refined petroleum products. The Rivers State Government also had a stake in the consortium.
