Similarly, Bolaji Abdullahi, APC’s National Publicity Secretary and 23 lawmakers out of 24 in Kwara State House of Assembly also moved to the opposition PDP.

Following Tambuwal’s move, 18 out of the 30 members of the Sokoto State House of Assembly also defected from the APC to the PDP.

Declaring his new political platform before a mammoth crowd in Sokoto, Tambuwal, said, “Good governance vis-à-vis economic well-being of our people remain the major reasons for my action today”.

Tambuwal, who said he is returning to the PDP, the party he left in 2014 with a clear conscience cited massive disunity in the country, rising ethno-religious crisis, lopsided appointments by the Muhammadu Buhari-led government and incompetence of the ruling party as reasons why he called it quit with the party.

Other reasons for his dumping APC are massive corruption in the party, crumbling economy, widespread killings and youth employment among the teeming youths of the country.

He noted that “information from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that over nine million jobs have been lost in the last three years since the APC government came into office.”

According to him, it was time Sokoto people and Nigerians identified with realities on ground while assuring that “this journey is set to collectively rid the state and country of the immeasurable negative trend of events that have characterised every facet of our lives as citizens.

“We are in dire need to advance the state to its place of glory. We have to fine tune a new political direction to salvage our common collective interests”, he stated.

Tambuwal said himself and the people of Sokoto State had to take a stand after wide consultations with relevant stakeholders across the state, adding that “I don’t personalise politics and therefore will ask you to suggest a party.”

“In line with the best tradition in any major political decision, especially by a serving elected governor, I have widely painstakingly consulted far and wide, if the present political platform is a viable vehicle for achieving the aspiration of our people.

“It is because I am convinced that no nation can thrive while there is inequity and bad governance; because I am saddened by the fact that lethargy, incompetence and sustained denier of obvious leadership missteps have become the major raw materials with which the Nigerian state is being run today”.

The governor, however, openly threw to the crowd the option to suggest which party to defect to and in response the anxious gathering chanted “PDP”, while he replied: “I will go with you” and the crowd rented the air with slogans “Sai Mutawalle”.

According to the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, “Nigeria needs competent hands to drive the course for capable administration that will advance its overall interest to prosperity.

“The yearnings and aspirations of our people in Sokoto State and Nigeria are paramount.

“Now, almost four years into what ought to be a new order as desired and elected by Nigerians, sadly, the nation is going through the most difficult and precarious times, since the civil war, with ethno-religious and regional distrust at its highest ebb.”

Sokoto Lawmakers Defect To PDP

Alhaji Salihu Maidaji, the Speaker of the Sokoto Assembly, who was among the 18 defecting members, made the defection announcement at the Assembly plenary on Wednesday.

Maidaji said: “We the undersigned 18 members of the Sokoto State House of Assembly belong and identify with the faction of the APC-led by one of its founders, Alhaji Buba Galadima.

“We are aware that all efforts to bring sanity into the APC and unite the different groups, camps and faction have proved abortive.

“This after several attempts and efforts and the election is around the corner and we stand in danger if we remained in a party that is divided against itself.

“As such in accordance with the letters and spirit of section 109 (1) (g) of the constitution as amended we hereby defect to PDP forthwith,” the speaker said.

Reacting to the resolution by the 18 members, the remaining 12 members at a press briefing after the plenary wished them well in their new party.
