Even before he gets a possible Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s nomination for 2019 presidential race, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s bid for the exalted position has already hit some heavy bumps and storms.

Olusegun Obasanjo, former president and boss, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said Atiku should never count on him to support his latest bid to actualise his life-long ambition of being elected the president of Nigeria.

In an interview with Premium Times, Obasanjo swore he would never support Atiku even as he invoked God to buttress his position:

“How can I be on the same side with Atiku?” Mr Obasanjo asked. “To do what?”

“If I support Atiku for anything, God will not forgive me. If I do not know, yes. But once I know, Atiku can never enjoy my support,” he added.

Obasanjo’s pronouncement comes barely two weeks after Abubakar declared his intention to run for president and weeks after a photo-op between him and Obasanjo at an event on China Africa relations, organised by Gusau Institute in Abuja.

“I do not have personal grudges with anyone,” Obasanjo said. “If you do not do well for Nigeria, you do not do well for all of us.”

“It is not a question of working with or not working with an individual,” he said. “If you are working for the good of Nigeria, I am working with you. If you are not working for the good of Nigeria it does not matter who you are I am not working with you.”

“Most of you do not understand the way I operate,” Mr Obasanjo said. “And I thought your own paper will understand better.”

“I know Atiku very well. And I have mentioned my position with Atiku. My position has not changed,” he said.

On a personal note, he added, “If my children are getting married, he has sent representatives. If his children are getting married, I have sent representatives. That is social. That is not political.

2019: How Far Can PDP Go With Proposed Name Change
Sun, 05 Aug 2018

Shortly after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost election in 2015, some schools of thought were of the opinion that the party should change its name so as to finally bury the negative perception trailing it.

However, others thought otherwise, arguing that PDP, which ruled the country for 16 consecutive years, is already a brand that cannot be discarded because it lost an election or because some Nigerians have negative mindset against the party.

They however insist that the party should go beyond name change and ensure that a credible person emerges as the candidate.

“Essence of democracy is existence of choices in terms of candidates and in this case, presentation of a credible candidate is as important, if not more important than name change.”

But the recent moves towards coalition may have necessitated name change as some new entrants were equally said to be favourably disposed to it.

[better-ads type=”banner” banner=”13566″ campaign=”none” count=”2″ columns=”1″ orderby=”rand” order=”ASC” align=”center” show-caption=”1″][/better-ads]

The coalition, which came under the aegis of United Political Parties (CUPP), has one single agenda to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming 2019 election.

Although, the parties have agreed to run independently, under their party logo, but their intention, according to their communiqué after their meeting, was to present a single candidate during the presidential election that will unseat Buhari.

Even though changing PDP name was not featured in their meeting, according to their communiqué, but the body language of the stakeholders that participated in the coalition suggested otherwise.

Also recall that it was reported that the Reformed- All Progressives Congress (R-APC) had demanded from the PDP among other things to change its name in order for both parties to work together in preparation for the forthcoming presidential election.

Like a shadow, the issue of name change, which didn’t feature during the coalition, suddenly materialised few weeks later at the PDP NEC meeting and three years after the party was humbled by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 election.

The party didn’t only announce the plan to change its name, but had gone to set up a committee to execute the task.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the party NEC meeting, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan disclosed that the NEC has set up a committee to consider the possibility of changing the party’s name ahead of 2019 general elections.
