Tinubu’ll decide Ambode’s fate, says Lagos APC chairman
Thu, 13 Sep 2018

The last has not been heard of the crisis rocking the Lagos State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) over the choice of candidate for the 2019 governorship election as the state chairman of the party, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, yesterday, declared that members will throw their weight behind whoever APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, endorses.

Balogun, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists, however, said the party will be fair to the three aspirants, who have already declared their intention to fly the party’s ticket in the forthcoming general elections.
He said the party strongly believes in the leadership of Tinubu in the state, having led it to electoral victories since 1999.

This is as Governor Akinwunmi Ambode also yesterday played down speculations of a rift between him and Tinubu over his second term bid.

The governor said reports of a feud between him and Tinubu were out of place. The governor, according to party sources, yesterday returned his nomination forms by proxy to the national secretariat of APC in Abuja.

There is uneasy calm in the Lagos APC over the decision of the Managing Director of Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC), Babajide Sanwoolu and an associate of ex-Governor Babatunde Fashola and former Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Hamzat Ambode, to challenge Ambode for the party’s governorship ticket.

But, Balogun, who said that party leaders have waded into the matter, noted that the number of governorship aspirants may reduce before the primaries.

He also disclosed that 230 aspirants picked the nomination forms for the Lagos State House of Assembly election, adding that over five million members of the party in the state will determine the fate of all aspirants, including those for the governorship position through the direct primary system.

His words: “What is happening in Lagos State is democracy in action. You can’t trample on people’s right; you can’t stop anybody from contesting. It is their constitutional and individual right to contest whether the party wants it or not. It is left for members of the party to decide. The party members will participate in choosing the candidate and we are going to use the direct primary. All the three governorship aspirants are going to participate in the primary. If three people have taken forms, it means members of the party will decide who they want because APC is a discipline party.”
