Kanu resurfaces in Jerusalem, Kalu reacts
Sat, 20 Oct 2018

BUY OR SELL OLD AND NEW CARS, PARTS, CAR MATERIALS AS CAR MART NG LAUNCH IN NIGERIA

One-year after he went missing, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was yesterday sighted in the holy city of Jerusalem, following an online video that had gone viral. Kanu had gone missing since early September in 2017, during a show of ‘Operation Python Dance II’ in the South-East zone, after some soldiers from the Nigerian Army invaded his home in a bid to arrest him for allegedly violating court orders. His disappearance led to accusations and counter accusations as the Kanu family and Federal Government had engaged in exchange over the whereabouts of the separatist leader.

In the seven-minute video seen by Saturday Telegraph, clad in white cloth and a cap, the pro-Biafra separatist group leader was seen praying at the Wailing Wall in the holy land. Some IPOB supporters had earlier posted on the social media that Kanu would be going live on Facebook before the actual arrival of the Biafran leader. Before Kanu’s prayer, Radio Biafra also confirmed in a tweet posted by the deputy leader of IPOB, Uche Mefor, that Kanu would be broadcasting live on Facebook praying in Jerusalem.

“The Supreme Leader of the Indigenous People of #Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, would within an hour from now be praying in Jerusalem Live on Facebook. All are enjoined to hook on!”, the tweet said. The Nigerian-British activist suddenly went missing when soldiers from the Nigeria Army invaded his Umuahia family compound.

The government was accused of keeping him in captivity but the Buhari administration had since dismissed the claims that he was being held by the military, claiming that Kanu was hiding and trying to escape justice. In February 2018, his wife, Uchehi, said the APC led government had to provide her husband before the elections.

Kanu was first arrested in October 2015 for demanding the separation of Biafra from Nigeria and was later granted bail in April 2017. It is, however, not surprising that Kanu chose to reappear in the Israeli prayer site as he had earlier converted to Judaism before his disap-pearance.

His conversion was allegedly premised on the belief that he wanted the Israeli government to wade into the crisis and put pressure the Federal Government to hands off his case. At one of his hearings in Abuja, Kanu was seen accompanied by a Jewish Rabbi based in Anambra State, proving his conversion to the Jewish faith. However, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel, told Saturday Telegraph that the family received the news through the online video and is overjoyed with the discovery. Fine boy, as he is popularly called said IPOB members and the entire residents of Isiama Afaraukwu community received the news with joy and are glad that Kanu is still alive.

He, however, said the family was yet to receive information concerning the whereabouts of Kanu’s parents, HRH Eze Israel and Sally Kanu. He said: “I can confirm to you that the person in the video is Kanu. He was praying in the video that we saw. We are happy that he is still alive and we will try to establish communication with him.” But a leader of Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Comrade Uchenna Madu, Kanu may soon return home if there is need for him to return. He said: “Well, I cannot say for sure that he will be coming back to Nigeria but if there is need for him to do so he will definitely come back.” Kanu’s appearance is coming on the heels of a plan by IPOB and MASSOB to boycott the 2019 general election in the country. Madu, who confirmed the planned boycott, said the Coalition of Biafran Agitators, had been under pressure by elders of the South-East to jettison the idea of boycotting the election but was quick to add that they were yet to succumb to their pressure. He added: “We are still discussing on the matter but we are yet to succumb to the pressure. Discussions are still on with the elders of Biafra and when the time comes, we shall make public our final decision on the matter.” Madu, however, noted that all Biafran groups are happy with the appearance of Kanu who he said is alive and healthy and not under the custody of the Nigerian government.
