Widows of soldiers killed by Boko Haram: We can’t feed our children, pay school fees
Sat, 01 Dec 2018

The mere mention of the name of the dreaded sect, Boko Haram, invokes untold fear in the minds of many Nigerians, how much more for those who have unfortunately become victims of the mindless killing and bloodletting of the group. But, however, grim the tales coming from some are, there are also people who have seemingly cast off the toga of victims and are able to become overpowered by joy once again.

The plight of families of some Nigerian soldiers who died in the line of duty in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East is, to say, the least, harrowing. One of them, Bilikisu Salele Fago, wife of Sani Mamman Fago, who lost his life in an encounter with Boko Haram insurgents in Maiduguri, is now left with the burden of feeding and taking care of four children, made up of two females and two males. According to her, the family is facing issues regarding feeding and keeping the children in school. And without mincing words, she said it is a situation that gives her more than her fair share of headache due to the fact that the family is yet to receive any entitlement since the demise of her husband years back.

Fago, who is appealing to the Nigerian Army to settle the issue of her late husband’s entitlements, said her late husband was serving in Calabar before his deployment to the North East where he eventually lost his life in the course of serving his fatherland. Another widow who spoke to Saturday Telegraph, Malama Abdullahi Daura, the wife late Abdullahi Ado Daura, who lost his life to Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East, said she was left with seven children and no entitlement concerning her late husband seems forthcoming. Complaining bitterly in a chat with our correspondent in Katsina, she said they are yet to receive the money due to her late husband.

“Feeding, paying for accommodation and school fees for their seven children is very difficult and the situation is giving me endless sleepless nights,” she lamented, calling on the authorities concerned. In tears, she added: “Please, Nigerian Army temper justice with mercy by paying us what is due to my late husband.” Complaints by wives of soldiers and police officers who lost their lives in the war with insurgents are becoming too numerous to keep tabs on. The overriding sentiments echoed by all of them is that it takes years to collect their entitlements when they lose their beloved husbands.

The family members of a police officer, Mikailu who was said to have lost his life in Benue State in 2014 are facing the same predicament. Aside the money handed to them for their breadwinner’s burial, they are yet to receive his entitlements. Another of such case is that of one Joseph, a survivor of near decapitation in Yobe State some years ago who is one of those living out the maxim of light yet at the end of the tunnel. Not many would have blamed a man who almost died in a horrendous attack by Boko Haram just six years ago if he considers merely existing and living for the moment as the basis of the rest of his life.

Back in November 2012, Jacob was in the throes of death. With the marauding forces of Boko Haram having attacked his location in Yobe State, his human mind couldn’t have hoped for a lot more than a quick and less painful death. Not only were his hands tied, members of the devilish sect went ahead to slit his throat like a ram and left him for dead. Not even his family members, let alone the attackers, could have thought he would make it past the next few hours alive.

But against all odds, Joseph didn’t just survive, he is alive and thriving. This November, to mark his 6th anniversary of survival rather than wallowing in lamentation of his fate, Jacob got married to his beloved wife in northeast Nigeria. For those who know his story, the sealing of that journey of endurance, persevering care and ultimately, love, was not given. For due to the medication he had to take daily to contonue to suppress the pain gnawing at the vital organ that his throat is, he had to defer getting married. Noy doing so would have further hardship on his new bride, a woman who has had to take a lot already on account of the complexity of the situation.

If his wedding appears like an achievement, recently obtaining his National Certificate Examination (NCE) nine years after graduation, can be seen as a miracle. More so when cognisance is taken of the fact that his school even punished him for the period he was hospitalised and no one was sure w become of his story. All these he did without receiving any support from the Nigerian government throughout his travails. In fact, last year he was briefly held by the army as a suspected terrorist on account of the scars he bears and inflicted by Boko Haram.
