2019 presidency: APC, PDP lobby fringe parties for support
Sun, 02 Dec 2018

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently in talks with some other political parties, mostly fringe parties, with the aim of working out fresh alliances that would see the presidential candidates of the parties stepping down for candidates of the major parties.

Sunday Telegraph gathered that the two leading political parties decided to seek a fresh pact with other political parties, following the emergence of 79 presidential candidates for the February 16, 2019 election.
There are currently 91 political parties, including APC and PDP, but only 78 parties will be on the ballot.

The presidential candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has withdrawn from the race and picked a senatorial ticket.

PDP already had a working Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with some 38 other political parties under the platform of Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

Despite the MoU, over 27 of the coalition are fielding presidential candidates for next year’s election.

Apart from PDP, other parties fielding presidential candidate in the election are the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Action Alliance (AA), Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Democratic Party (ADP), All Grand Alliance Party (AGAP), Action Peoples Party (APP), the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), Better Nigeria Progressive Party, Democratic Alternative (DA) and Democratic Peoples Party (DPC).

Others are Grand Democratic Party of Nigeria (GDPN), Green Party of Nigeria (GPN), KOWA Party, Labour Party (LP), Mass Action Joint Alliance (MAJA) and Masses Movement of Nigeria (MMN).

The National Conscience Party (NCP), New Generation Party (NGP), National Unity Party (NUP), People for Democratic Change (PDC), Providence People’s Congress (PPC), All Grassroots Alliance (AGA), National Interest Party (NIP), Nigeria Democratic Congress Party (NDCP), Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and Young Democratic Party (YDP), also have presidential candidates.

Spokesperson of CUPP, Ikenga Ugochinyere, said the group would, this week, unveil a consensus presidential candidate.

Even though other presidential candidates may still be on the ballot, Ugochinyere believes the MoU would be respected.

“It doesn’t matter. The names will be on the ballot paper, but once agreement is reached on a consensus candidate, everybody will work to deliver him.

“CUPP is intact and we are working together since the coalition was formed, no party has left,” he said.

Ugochinyere disclosed that five more political parties might be joining the coalition this week.

He, however, refused to name the new parties as such would be pre-emptive.

A member of ADC, who asked not to be named, confirmed that negotiations were going on to choose a consensus candidate, but said he was not part of the negotiations.

“Our national chairman is the one attending the meetings. I don’t have the details, but I know they are discussing and will come up with a consensus candidate,” he told Sunday Telegraph.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the party was still in talks with other coalition parties to support its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“We’re in talks with them. Some of them who don’t have presidential candidate will be represented in the campaign council,” he explained.

On whether those that have already fielded candidates were being persuaded to withdraw, Ologbondiyan said they were still discussing with them.
