Abuse of 15-yr-old girl: Friends, Ayade’s aides, politicians move to save ex-commissioner
Sat, 15 Dec 2018

BUY OR SELL OLD AND NEW CARS, PARTS, CAR MATERIALS AS CAR MART NG LAUNCH IN NIGERIA

There were clandestine moves yesterday by some top politicians and associates of the embattled former Commissioner for Information in Cross River State, Edet Okon Asim, to stop his continued detention and save him from an impending court case. Asim, who is the Special Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Biodiversity, is being detained by the police for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl. He was accused of having canal knowledge of the girl for over three years, causing her to have three abortions. However, checks by the Saturday Telegraph revealed that some aides of the governor who happened to be friends of the ex-commissioner had yesterday besieged the police station and also reached out to some highly placed government officials, aiming to downplay the situation and save the governor’s aide from being disgraced.

Noticing some unusual movements around the vicinity of the state police command, the Saturday Telegraph sought to unravel the happenings behind the unusual heavy human movements. Highly placed security sources confided in our correspondent that there were frantic efforts by some ‘”bigwigs” to ensure that Asim did not spend another night in detention but all their efforts failed as some civil society groups threatened to make issues out of the situation, if the police grant the request to let Asim go. One of the sources explained that, but for the action of the eagle-eyed CSOs and some lawyers, the governor’s aide would have been left off the hook.

“Yes, they tried to release him from custody and even tried to stop the case from going to court, but our ogas had no choice than to refuse their request. The pressure was just too much, but the lawyers and CSOs are monitoring. It is a sensi-tive case”, he said. But another source, a female, argued that it is a genuine request, which the police is legally bound to oblige. He however inform that the police are willing to quickly move the matter to court so as to wash its hands off the case. “Look, it is true that they want to release him but their actions are not totally wrong. It is a bailable offence, the man has a right to seek for bail. It is just that people make are making a mountain out of this case. “Anyway, the police will quickly hands of the case.

We need to charge him to court so that we don’t continue to have pressure on the police”, the female official said. Confirming the situation, James Ibor, the lawyer to the 15-year-old girl, said that he watched as top politicians in the state invaded the state police command, apparently to save Asim, but said they were disappointed when they were not allowed to see the former commissioner.” Speaking with our correspondent, Ibor added: “Yes, I am the lawyer handling the case.
