Buhari, Obasanjo clash over election fraud alert

A huge row broke out yesterday over the February 16 presidential election.

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo accused President Muhammadu Buhari of planning to rig the poll. The President rejected the allegation and advised Obasanjo to “see a good doctor for good threatment”.

Obasanjo doubted the impartiality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which defended itself and insisted that it was confident of delivering free and fair elections.

Obasanjo said INEC should ensure that one of its national commissioners, Hajiya Amina Zakari, stays off the conduct of the poll, especially at the Collation Centre.

He claimed that it was obvious that Mrs Zakari was related to Buhari by marriage.

The former president asked the international community to impose a visa ban and other sanctions, including freezing of accounts, on politicians suspected to be behind the rigging plot.

He accused President Buhari of executing a self-succession plan like the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.

In his view, Nigeria is sliding back to the Abacha era.
